[November Tests 2016 EOYT] Ireland vs. New Zealand (05/11/2016)

Might want to see how the rest of the series goes first. Will be interesting to see how Ireland get on playing NZ in Dublin in a game they are now expected to win....

Nope. Ireland still underdogs and whatever happens nobody can take the win away

IF Ireland and England can keep up their form for the rest of the AI'S then the six nations next year is something I'm really excited about.

Might try get tickets for the game.

Thats an interesting notion, Ireland having just won against the All Blacks away from home will now play an even more tired AB team and with home advantage.
It does smack of a favourites position.
I like it.
I just love it when the AB's are underdogs.

No way are we favourites in two weeks. If anything yesterday's result makes NZ bigger favourites for that one.

On that note I don't see where POM or SOB fit into our team when fit, Stander and Heaslip are undroppable while VdF topped the tackle count yesterday playing only 55 minutes! I could see a need for Ringrose over Kearney and Dillane over Ryan on the wider pitch in the Aviva though despite two immense performances yesterday.

I think you may want Ireland to be underdogs but the level of expectation will be much much higher than it normally is. It will be interesting to see how Ireland handle this and if JS goes again with an expansive game plan again. I do hope he sticks to his guns and the Irish players front up for no other reason than it could stop Gatland go with type on the Lions tour and try and expand his game plan a little bit.

4. Murray in my eyes showed yesterday why he's the most important player to Ireland.
Yep. He's developed into a smashing player.

Five tries to four; it's the way rugby should be played. Both teams have room for improvement. The game in Dublin in a fortnight could be a humdinger.

I think it's also though we have sufficient cover everywhere else. No disrespect to Marmion or McGrath but they really are a step down at moment. That may change in tome but Murray is vital to Schmidt's plan.
I thought Carberry even calmed thhings yesterday and now we have 2 options to back Sexton up.

Also Alpha you've point about POM and SOB but might be a horses for courses type of thing now.
But Ryan's work in scrum can't be underrated. Dillane I do rate but Ryan's form the last month has been scary

I hope Ireland can establish the mindset where they work towards being a consistently top four team in the world and rugby starts being more popular than the sports it is competing against domestically. They've a bigger population than NZ and better domestic organisation than Oz. Occassional away wins in Southern Hemisphere and being fiercely competitive in the north like the past 6 months should be something they aspire to doing regularly as the balance of power in world rugby slowly shifts.

As happy as I am for Ireland, I am annoyed at our guys. The mentality was lacking through the week, we spent too much time being tourists and show boating around Chicago. Disappointed in Savea in particular, he played like he was on a holiday. Also I felt Franklin should have been ahead of Scott Barrett and Kaino. Aaron Smith should have come off the bench, not started cold from a turbulent drama. We set ourselves up for defeat a little.

I don't think the game yesterday changes that much, some people now realise we can beat NZ whereas there was a lot of 'why bother turning up' comments prior to yesterday but we don't expect to beat them. Yesterday I was watching with English and Kiwi friends and they'll you that the first moment I thought Ireland were favourites to win was when Murray caught Savea in goal on 75 minutes despite the fact that I had been saying I think we'd win all week, it was the most uncomfortable viewing experience ever and it was a sign of playing a team who can be so much better than the one you support if given half a chance.

Two weeks time NZ will have a wider pitch, a second row and probably a better midfield and halfback pairing whereas Ireland won't be as pumped as yesterday or 2013. Yesterday was our best chsnce to beat them in the pro era and we did, Dublin is a bigger challenge and one too far currently for Schmidt's side still in the early stages of what is a 4 year plan.

As for the game yesterday, my hungover and still pumped points of interest are;

1. Conor Murray played the scrum halves equivalent to Dan Carter's perfect game v the Lions in '05, we arguably have the best 9 in world rugby with him after his shaming of Aaron Smith.
2. Rob Kearney completely justified his selection, his aerial play and covering was immense, ge had a few good contributions coming into tge line too including a try making line break. A bad missed tackle on Barrett being the only blemish after being hung out to dry by his midfield for NZ's first score.
3. Apart from the first try Henshaw and Payne were the difference in defence with a helping hand from Trimble, rarely did NZ look dangerous if they didn't do well off first phase ball.
4. Sexton is the best 10 in the world on his day, Beauden Barrett has been added to the long list of international 10's he's outclassed 1 on 1, Dan Carter being the only notable absentee.
5. Jack McGrath is the world's best loosehead, I won't accept any rebuttle to this claim because it would be wrong.
6. Ireland is going to have a serious population crisis soon, the nation won't be able to handle the alarming number of international class back rows, just look at Munster's, Leinster's and Connacht's back rows this weekend, the issue is scary and needs to be addressed.
7. 111 is now 0, tasty enough!

As Gordon D'Arcy said NZ were in uncharted territory once they had got the 18 test record. Mentally it is very hard to keep that level up. No question Ireland wanted it a lot more.

Agreed, I can't help but feel we have ruined our market in America a little as a result. The reputation we had built there was shattered yesterday, America was a potential gold mine for us commercially, I think our stock has fallen dramatically now in the States. But all that is besides the point, it was a brilliant match and a great advert for rugby and it couldn't of happen to a more deserving side.

I can't help wondering if people are getting a bit carried away on this.

It was a great game and Ireland deserve all the plaudits but has anything really changed following this weekend?

  • The ABs are still the best side in the world with everyone playing catch-up.
  • Ireland are an excellent side who have great performances in them at times, as has long been the case.
  • Wales under Howley are pretty uninspired, which I think was the case last time (maybe I'm mistaken). Either way their tactics don't seem to be standing them in good stead right now.
  • We don't know how good the Aussies actually are yet, although they look threatening.

No offence intended but it is quite funny to see the AB fans dissecting the team, highlighting weaknesses and calling for changes.
Of course everyone has their opinions about how a side should be strengthened but it's just one game - everyone has to lose at some point, the world order hasn't changed, this just makes things a little more interesting.

Agree ALJ. If the All Blacks drop BB he is more than welcome to come and live in Scotland for three years and we'll take him!

Makos - I doubt most of America even know or care much about rugby or the ABs losing yesterday (I am still a sceptic that it will make any major breakthrough there). From comments here, I understand that this match was only shown online there as well, so only hardcore American rugby fans would have logged onto watch. Chicago was much more interested in the Cubs winning the World series.

Alpha just on Kearney. I agree he was very good and Joe got it right.
But just to say he did miss tackles for 2 tries. And he had 2 missed tackles. Now don't get me wrong he wasn't completely at fault and wasn't alone. But there was errors as there was with others.

Few stats though.
Kearney was statistically our best attacker for metres made and defenders beat.
CJ was our best defender with most tackles made. Josh 1 less.

A full-back's not trying if he's not the best attacker for metres made.

I should really go and compile stats on what you can expect from someone depending on position in an international jersey...
