London 2012

Looking forward to the rowing tonight (New Zealand time - tomorrow morning in London...), as we are in three of the four finals. Our mens pair are almost un-backable favourites for gold, while the battle between Mahe Drysdale and Ondrej Synek in the single sculls should be great to watch (and I wouldn't rule out Alan Campbell either). We are an outside chance for a medal too in the womens double sculls, but the Great Britain pair look like big favourites in that race. It will be great if we can pick up a couple more golds, as it would put us ahead of Australia on the medal table :p (at least very temporarily....)

It was great watching te boys come out of nowhere to to secure Gold last night. :D

Is North America the only region that lists the medal table by total medals and not by Gold's first? I frankly can't stand the ranked by Gold's than total medals, it's ridiculous to see a country with one gold and no other medals ranked ahead of Canada which has 7 or 8 medals so far.

It's the only way the USA can stay ahead of China in the end ;)

I think the US will beat them in Gold's they are tied right now with all the Athletic events to come. It really makes the table completely different depending on which way you do it, Canada are ranked 11th on all the US and Canadian websites but we are below Georgia, Lithuania and Venzuela on BBC because their only medals are golds LOL. We are in 25th on BBC.

Edit: Before anyone makes the mistake I think will occur in a couple of posts, the IOC does not recognize an offical rankings list and actually prohibits this in it's charter. It does release the totals as a press release and it does use the gold medal first standard, but this is a convention.

I can't stand medal tables fullstop and think they run contrary to the so called Olympic spirit.

I think this is the IOC's thoughts as well and why they are reluctant to even issue one as part of the information packets, apparently they didn't even do that till 1992.

Meh.

If they just got rid of Taekwondo, Boxing, Wrestling, and Judo - and replaced all of them with MMA you would fix all of this.

As much as I love watching the wrestling ro judo on the olympics, MMA covers all breadths of any martial arts anyway. Maybe have three 5-minute rounds.

To me that is a bit like saying if you have the triathlon you don't need ocean swimming or the cycling road race. I find Judo boring to watch but I accept that it has a right to be in the Olympics.

The article doesn't want to get rid of the boxing, just the way it is officiated at the amateur level.

You misunderstand me, I'm saying they could do away with all of those other sports if they ever introduced MMA and used the argument against it that "there are too many sports".

I think the same could be said with all sports! Heck even professional fighting, be it boxing or MMA, has some absolutely WTF moments. It should be mandatory to have at least trained for a number of months, in the discpline(s) I reckon.

Just see MMA and the over-emphasis on striking, the Takedown, and the misconception that the guy on top is automatically winning.

Yeah with boxing there is a big disconnect with how it referee'd at the pro and amateur level. Don't think there is such a thing as amateur MMA so not really the same issue.

Yeah there is. But it's the same sport, just guys who haven't gone pro yet.

Though there are some leagues here in NZ where they take out certain aspects of martial arts (such as no neck cranks, or no cross-body heel hooks or ankle/footlocks etc) in order to make it 'safer'. I've heard of other leagues that don;t really adhere to the Unified Rules of MMA, which to a certain degree isn't MMA - strictly (see Pancrase).

And what will they be doing in those rounds?

There is no striking in wrestling or judo and there is no grappling in taekwondo and boxing. I think that you just have to appreciate each martial art as their own unique style. If you dont like watching it, change the channel.

awesome rowing from mahe.

unlucky for the girls double though, tough oppositions in that final and GB were just too good.

Anyone watching the Heptathlon?
Some serious talent on display.
They're not too bad at athletics either.
