Hayes wasn't great it's true, but you have to remember the dire straits Irish rugby was in regarding the front row around 07'. We had Hayes Horan, Buckle and Bryan Young as our props for the RWC that year - a truly shocking state of affairs. There didn't seem to be anyone coming through the pipe line on either side of the scrum so under those circumstances a tighthead who could hold his own against most teams was a bit of a godsend.
While we're not exactly blessed now, things have indeed moved on. Ross has a few more years left in him while Healy will have the number 1 jersey in good stead for at least another 8 years. Hagan, McGrath, McAllister, Archer and Maguire are all at least in the system now and with the way props develop one or two of them could turn out to be top class given the right instruction. This is all the more likely considering that the provinces are going to have to try their best to bring them up to HC standard within 3 years.
