June Internationals: Canada vs. Ireland (15/06/13)

I thought Canada looked a well coached side. Crowley is doing a fine job there as the winning streak showed. Its a pity Canada were not playing Wales instead! ;)

to those who thought I was too hard on the Canadian boys with my player rankings. He is a The Province's rugby journalist rankings, personally I think he was far too gentle on them:

A great opening 20 minutes for Canada was followed by Irish dominance in the second quarter. The Canadians came out of the break guns-a-blazing, Tyler Ardron grabbing a go-ahead try in the 46th minute. They continued to press but Darren Cave's try, set up by a Tommy O'Donnell break, opened the floodgates, making for a long final 20 minutes for the home side.

So many good things spoiled by a difficult end.

1. Hubert Buydens – scrummaged well; the Irish team demolished the Americans a week ago, so for the Canadian front row to be solid like it was on Saturday at BMO is a testament to how far the trio has come. Defended well. 7.

2. Ray Barkwill – struggled some at the lineout, a surprise given that the throw is his traditional forte. Again, defended well but struggled to influence as a support runner. 6.

3. Jason Marshall – like Buydens, his work in the set piece is impressive. Had a couple strong runs with the ball and defended well, but the penalty for the late hit cancelled out what looked to be developing into a breakaway try for Ciaran Hearn. 6.

4. Jebb Sinclair – possibly Canada's man of the match. Battled hard defensively, was a very powerful outside ball runner. Took on the enormous Irish second row with vigour. 8.

5. Tyler Hotson – 'Hot Sauce' was again Mr Dependability. Rucked well and was a solid target in the lineout. He's athletic and uses it well. 7.

6. Tyler Ardron – ran a close second to the impressive Sinclair. Scored Canada's try and was a dynamic defensive force. The Ospreys are surely thrilled by this performance, a week after signing on. 8.

7. John Moonlight – never got going offensively but did well on defence. His physical game was well-matched by the Irish. Did a good job of securing rucks, though. 7.

8. Aaron Carpenter – Like Moonlight had a few moments on attack but mostly had to be tough defensively. A steady hand leading his team as well. 7.

9. Phil Mack – was very influential early in the first half, though he did make a bad read on a kick early on. Struggled to find gaps around the fringes as the game wore on, though he make the initial break that set up Ardron's try. 6.

10. Nathan Hirayama – Canada tried a very dynamic offensive structure in the backs, with Jones and Braid also spending time at first receiver. Hirayama did well enough with the ball he had, but with the Irish back row pounding away at the Canadian inside backs, questions were asked of Hirayama and Jones' tackling. They both eventually wore down. A tough day at the office. 6.

12. Harry Jones – similar to his fly half partner, struggled on the whole in defence. Also struggled on attack; is inside centre really the best spot for him? 6.

13. Ciaran Hearn – battled hard against a very physical Irish centre pairing. Ran well with the ball he had, though like his back line mates, wilted defensively as the second half wore on. 7.

11. Taylor Paris – had a couple good runs with the ball but had little to do going forward. The game's first try was scored outside of him, but the defence had folded on the inside before him so it's hard to put blame here. Still, far too quiet on the day. 6.

14. James Pritchard – kicked well but when your opposite scores a hattrick, you know it was tough day at the office. His face at the post-game press conference said a lot about how well his game went. 6.

15. Connor Braid – struggled to have any influence and was slaughtered by Irish fly half Ian Madigan's kicking in the first half. Will he get a shot at the number 10 jersey in Japan? He's under-utilized at the back. 5.

Subs

Ryan Hamilton (for Barkwill) – came on early in the second half, just as the Irish pressure was mounting. Struggled to influence. 6.

Andrew Tiedemann (Buydens) & Doug Wooldridge (Marshall) – both came on with eight minutes left, played a lot of defence. 6.

Jon Phelan (Hotson) – got 11 minutes of action, all pretty much on defence. 6.

Nanyak Dala (Moonlight) – had a couple runs with the ball in his 20 minutes of action, but with traffic going the other way, it was a tough assignment. 6.

Sean White (Mack) – came on 15 minutes into the second half but the tide was turning. Provided good service under tough conditions but wasn't a threat to run. 6.

Liam Underwood (Carpenter) – came on for the final moments of the game and played woefully out of position. Incomplete.

Pat Parfrey (Braid) – played 20 minutes, but did he touch the ball? Just his second cap but both have been tough assignments. 6.
