So as a Completely non-biased Paddy this is how I reckon the teams square up...[/b]

I'd have it more like this: (Compared Brussow to Wallace however, both opensides no matter that number are different.)

1. Beast - Healy - SA(for now)
2. Smit - Flannery - SA
3. BJ Botha - Hayes - SA
4. Bakkies - O'Callaghan - SA
5. Matfield - O'Connell - SA
6. Deysel - Ferris - Ire
7. Brussow - Wallace - SA
8. Kankowski - Heaslip - Ire

9. du Preez - O'Leary - SA

10. Steyn - Sexton - SA (although Sexton has the potential to be better)
11. Habana - Earls - SA
12. Olivier - Wallace - SA
13. Fourie - O'Driscoll - Ire
14. Pietersen - Bowe - Ire
15. Kirchner - Kearney - Ire

16. Bismark - Cronin - SA
17. du Preez - Buckley - SA
18. Bekker - Cullen - SA
19. Roussou - Leamy - SA
20. Hougaard - Stringer - SA
21. Pienaar - O'Gara - SA
22. Potgieter - D'Arcy - IRE

From that, it looks clear cut that SA are a better team, especially the bench. However, rugby isn't down to individuals. If Ireland can survive up front in the scrums and linout, and stop Brussow from stealing all their ball they have a good chance. That's alot of big if's though.. I think Ireland have the class in the backs, and they use them in a better way than SA, so if they get ball, they could win.

SA go in as favourites. I personally expect a 7-12 point win to SA. As the age old saying goes, forwards decide who win, backs by how much. Irelands forwards just aren't quite up to it yet.

Fair enough on the point made about Flannery but I'll stick to my other selections, also Healy, Cronin, Sexton and Earls will be better than their opposites by the next World Cup imo.

Flannery is a better player than Smit. Smit might be the greatest captain of all time and all that but when it comes to technical skills, I'd have Jerry ahead of him. Smit wouldn't get into the Irish team, but then again Jerry wouldn't get into the SA team.

I think BJ Botha, Bakkies Botha, Matfield, Brussow, Du Preez and Habana would all make the Irish team, Ferris, Heaslip, O'Driscoll and Kearney would probably make the South African team. SA definately have better individuals.

SA also have a better scrum and Lineout (although we will be secure on our own throw), and will have the upper hand at the breakdown unless we can do a France and start bullying them, SA's problem will be scoring tries, Ireland's will be getting into the position to score tries, if they get chances, they will take them.

Close close game, almost too close to call, but I say a narrow Irish win. Or as Logo would say, Ireland by 25 :D

I disagree, Smit would walk into the Ireland team. Flannery flatters to deceive. He carries for massive yardage yet most of those yards are when he's running sideways across the pitch. His scrummaging is weak which is why Rory Best often gets selected ahead of him. What Flannery has going for him is a tireless workrate and the fact that he's a good lineout thrower. He's an unexceptional player. In my opinion he's not as good a player as Shane Byrne and Keith Wood (obviously) were in their prime.

Agree with you about Healy. But the other three have a huge amount to prove first. I know Sexton has all the potential, but it was onlu last year (before the HC semi) that he was playing very poorly, missing simple kicks etc. Hook has shown that if you don't keep it up, things can go wrong (although Sexton controlles a game better than Hook). If Sexton has another good game against SA, he'll really prove to me that he's def got what it takes (hope he does, cos then we can all stop complaining about O'Gara). Earls is another where things could go wrong. His best position still hasn't been sorted and he still hasn't shown that much at international level yet. Great potential though! I'll take your word on Cronin, as I don't know all that much about him, or at least I can't place the name to the face.

I'll be cheering Ireland all the way. Should be a belter of a game.

OH SNAP indeed :(

I hope BOD doesn't break him, we will need him for the Heinken Cup.

Well, JDV has certainly been garbage since joining Munster.

Who knows, maybe he'll score his 1st try since moving north.

Or maybe he'll break his leg.

Who knows?

Then again, the JdV & Fourie partnership is considered to be one of the best in the world..

Boks by 10.
