International coach of the year

I don't think this Duncan bloke gets the point of the award.

I'm not that fussed with his article - it does go on way too much and he tries to make various points which I think are irrelevant.

The part I agree with is where he says "But this was a year when the sport only had one prize – the golden Webb Ellis Cup and Hansen has that in his meaty paws after a comprehensive 34-17 victory at Twickenham."

For me the coaching achievement of winning the Cup regardless of what team wins and by in large what else is accomplished in world rugby by any other team/coach is more than enough to take home that prize.

I understand and respect the fact that others disagree, but for me it is as simple as that.

Not that it matters much, just an interesting talking point. Well done Cheika though!

It will be very interesting to see if he can continue to develop this team. Big opportunity to really start to challenge the ABs now that we are moving on to a very different phase. He has the RC to defend (in a full home and away tournament) which I think will be tough. A chance to take the Bledisloe off NZ, and the 3 test series v England.

What are the thoughts in OZ? Are there high hopes Cheika can continue to build this team?

I think Cheika has done a great job with the WB's, however there are still major things we need to fix.

1) Depth. We need to create depth in all positions like the AB's do.
2) More consistent performances - this is happening but still needs improvement.
3) Our line out
4) Dropped balls

We are on the up, however we still have things to work on.

Would agree with all of that.

Hansen creates one of the most invincible teams the game has seen, but a flash in the pan big mouth gets the award on the back of Pocock.. how close was he to looking like the most overrated coach ever in the Scotland game..

Pretty disgusted with the IRB right now.

Have to agree here ^

But what ever, let's sit around and wait for us to "click" and "start playing" like a lot of people have been saying after every game, I've actually lost count of the amount of below average AB performances this year. I'm not saying we're going to lose, but there's so much more we could be doing to make things easier for ourselves.

The way you talk about the management ABs2011 is like they're some sort of deities that can't be questioned or thou shalt be smited.

lol.

Congrats Cheika! The best rugby coach by far far away!

im going to be a bit harsh here but...

the RC was pretty pointless this year. reduced to just 3 games each and Aussie had a huge advantage with Home games against NZ & SA, SA had a home game against NZ and NZ had to play SA and AU away.

outside WC years its the most important cup in World rugby, but on WC years it takes a back seat.

Chekia has been a good coach but IMO the most important thing for the Aussies this year was having Pocock back from injury.

Hansen Probably deserves it and well... you couldn't say he doesn't deserve it... But other than him I'd say the most significant team performances have been from Japan and Argentina. I think Eddie Jones would have been a good choice for coach of the year.

Kinda feel the same way.

DC got player of the year, but a lot of posters think this was based of his 3 good WC performances, so if the criteria for player of the year is based on good performances at the world cup, then surely coach of year meets the same criteria, and lets see, who was the most successful WC coach who didn't lose a game and won the WC...

Congrats to Cheika for winning it btw, he turned an Aus team around and gave them hope, but it looks pretty inconsistent to me.

With a narrow advantage at the end of the first half the story would be different. Nigel Owens was so important with his little mistakes in favour of his favorite team. The penalty by the legal Kepu's tackle on Carter (3 points), the pornographic knock-on by NMS. Without of his helps the score would be narrow at the start of the second half. Hansen wouldn't have taken the risk of replacing Conrad by SBW at the start of the 2nd half and the ABs wouldn't play so relaxed at the first minutes of the 2nd half. After ALL that, the Wallabies made 2 tries in 10 minutes and the ghosts of the poor performance in the RWC Final 2011 against a poor French side began to appear in Twickenham. The Wallabies gained a lot of meters easily against a fearful NZ team until the Carter's drop goal. And after the Carter's drop Wallabies still gained a lot of meters. Without the points that Nigel gave in the first half (Kepu's legal tackle on Carter, pornographic knock-on by NMH) the story would be different.

You're saying a lot of "would've" this and "wouldn't have" that, but you can't assert your imaginings as fact. Words like, "could've" and phrases like "might not have" would help you post your imaginings with a better position of the actual weight of them.

Ravings of a lunatic. Not even die hard Aussie fans believe this sort of drivel.

"If Kepu had been rightly yellow carded after his third of fourth high shot we would've hit 50!" See you can be a one sided buffoon for both teams.

I think Chekia probably deserved this one, in a close call. Most probably got it for how far he managed to move the Wallabies forward from the rabble they have been in recent years.

Third or fourth? Kepu didn't touch Daniel!

What did Hansen have to do to win coach of the year?

I guess winning that Sydney test was more important than winning the World Cup.

Everything about this season was about one thing, winning the World Cup. Obviously. Does it even need to be said?

Every decision, every selection, every player rested, the training regime, the match tactics, substitutions, all of it was about nothing - nothing - except getting to the knockout stages of the World Cup in peak form. Does anyone seriously think the All Black performances in the group stages mattered at all compared to how they helped prepare the side for the knockout stages? Does anyone really think the results in a truncated Rugby Championship mattered even 1% compared to the World Cup?

Can Cheika even be talked about in the same breath as Hansen?

Give me a break.

1st was the late hit on Carter - Correctly penalised
2nd was high tackle on Carter - Penalised - I don't think it was a yellow but could have been given yellow due to multiple foul plays by the same player
3rd high tackle on McCaw when delivering the final pass to NMS for the first try - Not penalised - Would have been a definite yellow card
4th high tackle on NMS in second half after the first SBW offload - Not penalised - If all the offences been picked up he should have been red carded with Australia playing with 14 men for the rest of the second half.

Cheika is a good coach but he also employs dirty tactics, his boy Skelton used to do this targeting McCaw (this year SupeRugby War vs Cru, Bledisloe tests this year). In absence of Skelton he uses Kepu to do the dirty work. Trying to injure players. Did Carter lay down after the late hit? - of course he did, and well done, thanks for the free points Cheika!

Wallabies can't really blame the ref, after all they wouldn't be in the final if it wasn't for the ref. Be fortunate that NZ allowed you back in the game, gave you an opportunity to take the game. You could have choked us. But instead you tripped over your own feet. Out classed at the end.
