Getofmeland's Review of Rugby World Cup 2011

Awesome, awesome, awesome stuff! All the info is very much appreciated AJ. Just a few questions from my side. Will there be a leading points/try etc. scorers list for the world cup? This one's a little unrealistic I guess, but will there be man of the matches after every game? Cool. Looking forward to get my hands on this beauty. Since it has the SA license in it, I'm rooting for you guys! Us South Africans really are a big market for rugby games. People are raring to play it already, hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

Guys, to be clear, under the RWC license we are permitted to include the country names, flags and kits in the colours of the teams participating in Rugby World Cup 2011. The Intellectual Property that belongs to the national unions, i.e. official kits, player likenesses, logos and in some case stadia, all must be licensed by the national union.

New Zealand and Australian licenses have been a priority for us since day one...

We learned over a year ago that the NZRU and the ARU had granted an exclusive license to HES before they knew that HB was going to be making a game independently of EA. Up until then, all that was known was that EA appeared unlikely to be making another Rugby game in advance of the World Cup. I don't say that to suggest that things would have played out any differently had our plans been more widely known, but that's the timeline. I have tremendous respect for how these two unions have supported their licensee. What I will tell you is that there has been a lot of blood sweat and tears that has gone into trying to secure the rights to have New Zealand and Australia in the game - we have literally gone to the mat on more than one occasion in our efforts to do so. On more than one occasion, I had great hope that we'd found a way, but in the end it was not to be.

Just out of curiosity, do you think either you at HB and Mario at Sidhe would consider seeking team licenses on a non-exclusive basis next time around? I ask as it seems slightly self defeating for both companies to be paying more in order to secure an exclusive license (I assume it's more expensive - as it seems to be counter to the interests of the unions to grant them exclusively) when it limits both their resources for successive licenses and leaves the other side with no choice but to pursue the same avenue.

Also, I know you may consider this "taking the ****" (a statement which Andrew pointed out was a little ironic given the look of the NZ side), but have you designed the game in a way that will make it easy for the modding community to rectify the licensing issue? This clearly would only be something the more serious Rugby fan would engage in, but it would be a nice wink and a nod to us all the same.

Finally, have you considered altering the game engine to make a Rugby League game at all? As I said before, graphically it'd be a lot of work I'm sure, but engine wise I'd imagine this would be a cake walk for you guys after tackling (no pun intended) the compex ruck, scrum and line out mechanics in Union. Play the balls and restart auto-scrums would surely be a lot simpler to program. Licensing would obviously be an issue, but if you get even do a RLWC with only international teams it'd be very interesting to see how well it sold after the negative reception of RLL.

England are currently in equal if not better form then the All Blacks. Ashton is argueably the best and fastest player in todays rugby, I cant see Rokocoko being able to keep up in the long term.

It would be a great match to watch for both fan bases but if the ABs can make it to the final (finally) then we may see it happen.

Hahahahahahaha that's an absolute joke. Ashton the best player in the world, um let me think about that.
Names like Carter, mccaw, Pocock, Cooper, Dagg, SBW, Beale, O'Connor, Mitchell,Nonu, etc spring to mind.

Just look at the user name bro haha redrosedave

Curious about the rucks. Not sure if I'm a fan but have to have a bash at it first. Thought it would be better to have it as whoever had the most players in fastest would win the ball. So if you got tackled, didnt commit and the oppostion did they'd walk straight over aka highlanders at the start of the s15. If you got tackled and commited a bunch of players in quick you'd generally keep it. Turnovers would happen when players isolate themselves. Also an option of putting hands in the ruck which you'd get away with every now and again. Still interesting concept they've decided on. Lovin the option to be able pick the ball up from a tackled player when there is no ruck.

No mention of player size and if it has anything to do with, well anything either. Hate to see Genia to be able to absolutely smash Nonu.

And can we set up pods of forwards to have a go at the line? or do we have pick n go? advanced lineout options? mauls? hope so cause until any of this is included we don't really have a proper rugby game. Ain't all about quick ball to the backs. I want to be able to smash the oppostion to pieces upfront then swing it wide just like the ... well ... oh..... ok .....ALL BLACKS

Its all about money at the end of the day. Licensing is used to gain leverage for marketing the game. Gamers won't be able to judge the game on gameplay and other features such as franchise mode if they haven't purchased and played the game.
If both rugby games had the same licenses, then I would buy the game with superior gameplay and features. Why fork out money if one game doesn't offer more than the other?

We have seen in the past, the battle between fifa and pro evo. Only until recently, fifa had the licences but pro evo had the superior game play.
We have noticed a slide towards Fifa recently due to improved gameplay to accompany licences. EA want to stifle their competitors. However the soccer gaming market huge, so it can accomodate more than 2 games and produce them yearly.

The rugby gaming market is small, it would suprise me if both continue to make rugby games after their releases this year. I hope they do, but I have to be realistic. The only hope is that the rugby gamming market grows.

The market will only grow, if people are exposed to rugby. I think the Unions would like rugby to be exposed much more. But I don't think it is the unions driving the exclusive deals. It is more the publishers imposing exclusive deals so other publishers cannot get them.
Ofcourse it is up to the unions to agree. Cannot blame them either, they would rather go with the exclusive deal with more money because rugby games do not get produced on a regular basis. It seems in this case it was first come first serve basis, HB tried to get All Blacks and Wallabies licence. However Sidhe/HES beat them to the punch, and vice verser for the other licences. How are the unions suppose to know that there are two rugby games going to be released this year. Even the HB and Sidhe didnt know initially that they would have competition.

Maybe NZRU will shift their thinking after this debacle. NZ is a rugby mad country and I am 90% sure the media (atleast game reviewers) will probably question why there are a bunch of random players in the NZ team in the official RWC game.

Hi Getofmeland! Just a few questions. First of all, can you agree that this game is propper "next-gen"? Is the rucks that is formed, like 08, all in the same body posision or does it differ depending on the ammount of players the enters? From what you have seen, does the players run in same line in a attacking move? Does the defensive line come up as the scrumhalf pick up the ball, or can you still run meters before someone tackles you? This would be my most imortant question,Are the player movements like a game of FIFA 10? For ex. Smooth turning, smooth running of lines, or is it the same as 08?

Thanks for a great review!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

...........................cant august be here already......

Gotta give credit to HB_AJ and Getofmeland for answering these questions. Really wetting our appetites :D :D
really wanna know if theres variation in sidestep animations between players :D :D

@ HB_AJ

Since you got the official RWC license, will the "World In Union" song be in the game?

Except either of mine. *sniff*

No to d-pad for lineouts.
Pressing the button - fast as you can. Mash the button mindlessly though, you risk filling the gauge, adding too much intensity, greatly increase the likelihood of being called for an infringement.

The World In Union is in the game - I believe this is the first time its ever been included in a game. It really does set the tone and get you in the spirit for Rugby World Cup.

On the topic of music, you will be able to select and play your own music, on both PS3 and X360.

I'm not going to say much more on licensing, but I think it's important that you guys know the following:

- Licensing decisions for Rugby Challenge are made by HES, not by Mario at Sidhe.
- Licensing at the Unions falls under the remit of the Commercial Director, not the Director of Charitable Giving.
- This game would not be made without exclusive licenses. The Rugby gaming market is not big enough.

1) Yay! 2) I'll have to wait and see if I can cope.

Thanks for answering, I wasn't really crying out for them, but now I can relax with the knowledge that I should be reasonably competitive. :)

Let me ask you this: when you play Rugby 08, what do you do at ruck time?

Thanks for the reply AJ. That's made me very happy that it's in. Adding to the question, not sure if you can answer this but, who will be singing it? As I don't think the RWC2011 organizers have revealed who is singing the official 2011 version of World In Union yet. Or will it be an Instrumental version of the song? Or are you using the Kiri Te Kanawa version?
