Just out of curiosity, do you think either you at HB and Mario at Sidhe would consider seeking team licenses on a non-exclusive basis next time around? I ask as it seems slightly self defeating for both companies to be paying more in order to secure an exclusive license (I assume it's more expensive - as it seems to be counter to the interests of the unions to grant them exclusively) when it limits both their resources for successive licenses and leaves the other side with no choice but to pursue the same avenue.
Its all about money at the end of the day. Licensing is used to gain leverage for marketing the game. Gamers won't be able to judge the game on gameplay and other features such as franchise mode if they haven't purchased and played the game.
If both rugby games had the same licenses, then I would buy the game with superior gameplay and features. Why fork out money if one game doesn't offer more than the other?
We have seen in the past, the battle between fifa and pro evo. Only until recently, fifa had the licences but pro evo had the superior game play.
We have noticed a slide towards Fifa recently due to improved gameplay to accompany licences. EA want to stifle their competitors. However the soccer gaming market huge, so it can accomodate more than 2 games and produce them yearly.
The rugby gaming market is small, it would suprise me if both continue to make rugby games after their releases this year. I hope they do, but I have to be realistic. The only hope is that the rugby gamming market grows.
The market will only grow, if people are exposed to rugby. I think the Unions would like rugby to be exposed much more. But I don't think it is the unions driving the exclusive deals. It is more the publishers imposing exclusive deals so other publishers cannot get them.
Ofcourse it is up to the unions to agree. Cannot blame them either, they would rather go with the exclusive deal with more money because rugby games do not get produced on a regular basis. It seems in this case it was first come first serve basis, HB tried to get All Blacks and Wallabies licence. However Sidhe/HES beat them to the punch, and vice verser for the other licences. How are the unions suppose to know that there are two rugby games going to be released this year. Even the HB and Sidhe didnt know initially that they would have competition.
Maybe NZRU will shift their thinking after this debacle. NZ is a rugby mad country and I am 90% sure the media (atleast game reviewers) will probably question why there are a bunch of random players in the NZ team in the official RWC game.
