Getofmeland's Review of Rugby World Cup 2011

No to d-pad for lineouts.
Pressing the button - fast as you can. Mash the button mindlessly though, you risk filling the gauge, adding too much intensity, greatly increase the likelihood of being called for an infringement.

Sounds very random to me - you should simply take control of players and manually run them into the ruck - like in Jonah Lomu Rugby (the best ruck system - simple but you had control)

The game really does sound like a updated version of 08 - lets hope the rucks are not just random and you can actually fight for possession (not feel like the computer is doing it all for you)

Are you for real? When was the last time you played lomu?

It was good craic at the time but basically you removed then slammed players back into the ruck to move it forward. It was completely unrealistic. Fun at the time buts let not get delusional and think it was realism, lomu was arcade and fun.

Its all about money at the end of the day. Licensing is used to gain leverage for marketing the game. Gamers won't be able to judge the game on gameplay and other features such as franchise mode if they haven't purchased and played the game.
If both rugby games had the same licenses, then I would buy the game with superior gameplay and features. Why fork out money if one game doesn't offer more than the other?

We have seen in the past, the battle between fifa and pro evo. Only until recently, fifa had the licences but pro evo had the superior game play.
We have noticed a slide towards Fifa recently due to improved gameplay to accompany licences. EA want to stifle their competitors. However the soccer gaming market huge, so it can accomodate more than 2 games and produce them yearly.

The rugby gaming market is small, it would suprise me if both continue to make rugby games after their releases this year. I hope they do, but I have to be realistic. The only hope is that the rugby gamming market grows.

The market will only grow, if people are exposed to rugby. I think the Unions would like rugby to be exposed much more. But I don't think it is the unions driving the exclusive deals. It is more the publishers imposing exclusive deals so other publishers cannot get them.
Ofcourse it is up to the unions to agree. Cannot blame them either, they would rather go with the exclusive deal with more money because rugby games do not get produced on a regular basis. It seems in this case it was first come first serve basis, HB tried to get All Blacks and Wallabies licence. However Sidhe/HES beat them to the punch, and vice verser for the other licences. How are the unions suppose to know that there are two rugby games going to be released this year. Even the HB and Sidhe didnt know initially that they would have competition.

Maybe NZRU will shift their thinking after this debacle. NZ is a rugby mad country and I am 90% sure the media (atleast game reviewers) will probably question why there are a bunch of random players in the NZ team in the official RWC game.

I highly doubt that this will occur.

I agree that NZ is a rugby-mad nation, but how many rugby supporters translate into gamers? I think 5% - 10% would be generous.

I also hope they have quite a few accomplishments/achievements.

Yeah, we need the game to be strong in this area.

I tend to replay games to get achievements, so challenging ones are essential for the game to have some replay value.

I hope the achievments are harder than the cricket games. we know one that maybe in the game, beat New Zealand with georgia. hopfully thats on hard :)

I need to take a roofie or something to forget about these rugby games for a while. News and media are too few and far between!!!

Now I know this may be flogging a dead horse (I love flogging so I'll continue), but I believe it could be a fairly straight forward and workable solution to the missing player likeness issues that have been long discussed and debated, be they for unlicensed teams or legitimate licensed teams (both of equal merit I might add).

Alastair, how feasible is it to include an extra pool of players in the game that are not associated with any team... a list of Free Agents so to speak?

1. This would be a large pool of players with no nationality assigned to them (they are "nation-free" we might say)
2. The players in this pool would be a list of randomly generated names, positions, skills and attributes.
3. The Free Agents players would however be comprised of a range of player models of pre-defined height/build/skin colour/hair colour types (more detail on these types later down below).
4. The Free Agent players may only be modified in the same way as any other player in game, e.g. name, position, attributes, special abilities
5. Within the player editor, an extra option should be added to assign/swap a player into a RWC squad for one of the games default RWC squad members. (If nationality is an attribute or variable used in the games coding or ingame, then this "assign/swap" option is only available on Free Agents and not players assigned to the default RWC squads.
6. The player who has just been swapped out from the default RWC squad (be they licensed or unlicensed) does not become a Free Agent, he's simply dropped from the default squad until the squad reset option is used. (By making HB's created players unusable from this point on protects the rights of the players or unions that have endorsed their license for use or those who did not).

The player models to be used in the Free Agents pool would all have the same generic face but otherwise be simply copies of already created player models (this should remove the need to create any new models, more a copy and paste multiple times job, hopefully meaning little development time needed/used).

In terms of the options needed to cover the majority of player builds, here's what I think would be needed:

Height:
from 5'6" up to 6'6" increasing in increments of 2" to keep the quantity down, which would give a total of 7 height variants.

Frame/Build:
Bulky (prop-esque)
Strong (showing alot of gym time there buddy!)
Normal (run of the mill rugby physique)
Lean (you need some carbs!)

Skin Colour Samples:
White
Coloured
Polynesian
Oriental

Hair colours:
Blonde
Black
Brown
Red
Bald
Scrum Cap

Now, taking each section as a multiplyer (7 x 4 x 4 x 5) gives us the total number of player models needed, albeit only one of each variant, which is 672.
This number could be trimmed back considerably as there are very few 6'6" Bulky Oriental Red-heads (and other such extreme combinations) to provide a more workable number of Free Agent player models to include.

An obvious major concern is the quantity of players needed to cover all bases and the actual disc space that their models would take up - as there is quite a limited number of teams, players and game modes shipping with the retail version of the game I would be hopeful that enough space does indeed exist on the retail disc (I hate to do comparisons but Sidhe are able to include 95 different teams with I expect similarly sized squads, so that would take up arguably even more space, but will still fit on a game disc).
In the event that disc space is an issue, how about releasing further Free Agents for this pool as DLC, to then take up HDD space instead?

So, in summary, a system like the above would allow me for example to swap into my England (fully licensed) RWC squad a player type that would be representative of Delon Armitage's (who will need included as a last minute replacement to the squad after the game has hit retail shelves) appearance from an ingame gameplay camera viewpoint. On closer inspection it could be seen that this player looks incomparably different to the real Delon Armitage and so not infringe on his or his Union's IP, in addition to the fact that it is a home user modification and no profit can be gained from their likeness use.

What say you HB-AJ (or any other HB rep), is something like this possible? And if not, I'd love to know your thoughts and reasonings behind it.
What if we did a poll on TRF and requested it as DLC, with enough interest would you guys consider it then?

Alastair & HB team - Would there be any chance of a reply or your thoughts on the above idea?

Even if its negative, would be interesting to read your thoughts on the matter, cheers.

I'm still keeping my pre-order btw, its not a dealbreaker for me initially to not be able to play against NZ with the correct heights/shapes of players in their expected real-life positions, but it is something that I think will eventually grate with me and alot of others after the excitement of the new game dies down and we move into the period where the main playing base on the game will be ardent rugby fans and not the pick-up-and-play casual gamer community.

I had another question asked previously too that I'd love to get a perspective/answer on: for the unlicensed teams (again using NZ as an example), will the substitute random players on these teams be rated realisticly to reflect their expected/best guess real world counter parts? (e.g. will Robert Hoskins, the red-haired, pale-skinned 5'5" flyhalf for NZ still be the best in the world at his position?)

Cheers for all the answers so far guys, looking forward to August that bit more :)

i didn't know that maori was a skin type

He merely meant that Polynesians would deserve to have their own skin type made. He also put Oriental, which isn't one, but was merely meant to say that Oriental peoples would also deserve a particular skin type in such a mode.

Really if we want to get specific on it, those two class more legitimately as names for skin types than White or Black, which are more or less stereotypes. The end point is, he meant to help. :)

If that's on the old hard it might be a good idea. If it's on a new hard difficulty that's twice as hard as the old game, it might be an extremely rare trophy.

The difficulty on Elite was reasonably easy in the past, but difficulty is something that can have a sharp curve when increased in particular ways.

Here's hoping that the AI actually varies in the few mistakes it makes per game and we don't all have to repeat certain patterns to win. That alone would make it harder.

Really looking forward to that first gameplay video. Only problem is i think its going to make me even more impatient...<_<

Na mate. Anyone who plays rugby or is seroius about rugby in NZ and is under 30 will buy these games.

Apologies if this has already been addressed, but do we know why the shots with England playing show the 2007 kit?

because the England World Cup kit has not been released yet
