Get your bets in for the All Black Squad for the june tests

hate SBW all you want for the Boxing, media attention and one year contracts. But he's not Rubbish, hes arguably the best 12 in the comp and clearly the best 12 in New Zealand.

Apparently there will be a 35 man All Black Training squad named this sunday that I think will get together for two camps(?) before the squad is named proper. That will be interesting enough.

I hope it's not a conservative squad when it's finally named. year one after the world cup is the best year to blood young players and pick on form. But test rugby is a trickey beast and The All Blacks are the one team in the world that always pick to win pretty much every time. Picking all new talent and inexperience just to devalop a side and potentially lose a game to Ireland with the main goal being to devalop for the future is not how the AB's work. The selectors will first and foremost be picking a squad that will win all three tests and to do that it needs experience. Tricky picking more than one or two new caps in a squad of 30.

Really the problem positions are Lock, the 4th Prop, 6th lose forward, halfbacks and outside backs. And at the end of the day it's going to be some specific markers the selectors are looking for that determine who's in and out...

If I were the coaches and I wanted to do a major cleanout. This would be my selection! (dont take it too seriously)

props: Woodcock, Franksx2, Toby Smith
hooker: Hore or mealamu (not both, Hore would be my first pick), Elliot, Coles
lock: Whitelock, Boric (if fit), Retalick, Broadhurst
Loose: McCaw, Read, Messam, Todd, Vito - Seriously, I would shift McCaw to 6 full time.
9: Leonard, Smith, Perrinara
10, Carter, Cruden
midfield: Smith, kahui, Nonu, SBW
outside backs: Guildford, Jane, Dagg, Ben Smith, Andre Taylor

- toby smith to me looks like a player that will some day be an all black, limited gametime this year due to injuries but I think now is the time with Afoa out of the picture - Carlie next in line.
- I dont think now is the time to carry two hookers who may not make it to 2015
- I see big futures for those 4 locks, I hope Boric comes back if not Ali Williams will be needed. Broadhurst is another player that to me just looks like he should be devaloped as a test player (like Toby Smith)
- McCaw should move to 6 now, the time is right. Toss a coin between Todd and Cane I think both are good enough.
- Total cleanout of the halfbacks. Leonard is in great form and still pretty young an the way he play prioritizes the players outside him. Those two young guns have too much talent to ignore.
- 10-13 options pick themselves, barrett next in line for 10 and Ellison/Crotty next in line for midfield. I honestly see Barrett overtaking Cruden in due course.
- Gear has had a number of chances at test level and in my view he hasn't delivered enough, in particular against Aussie and SA. One of those things, the vast majority of wingers peak before their mid 20's, in particular for players that rely on speed and power (Gear) more than all round skill (jane, Kahui).

Leonard has only played one game back from injury (and got injured in the first game of the season), so i think it is a bit early to say he is in 'great' form. Give him a few weeks yet. Although no other halfback other than Smith has been outstanding so I wouldn't be too surprised to see him in the mix.

The problem Hansen has is that I'm sure he would like to start developing, but this is his first series as head coach so cannot really afford to experiment. He is already in the big shadow of Ted, losing a game at home to Ireland wouldn't be a great start.

I like how SBW is playing this year, carrying it up hard without looking for the offload everytime. Used to do my head in when he would waft up to the line and throw a loose speculator out the back of the hand. Seems to pick his moments better now and make better use of his size/pace. He is certainly running with more purpose than Nonu at the moment.

I personally would like to see a shift in the way All Black halfbacks operate and selection in that area.

For a long time now halfback selection has been dominated by Cowan, Weepu and Elis and we could even include justin Marshall who came before them... them all of which I seem as quite selfish players as far as halfbacks go. Elis and Cowan in particular. They use a lot of time/space and possession for themselves and I think it's a crime considering NZ has the best backline talent in the world.

I want to see a selection shift to halfbacks whose focus is to promote the players outside them by providing fast ball and clearance straight from the breakdown so the backline has all the time given by the advantage line to work with. And IMO the two best at that in NZ right now are Aaron Smith and Brendon Leonard (who has been back for two games now and looked good in both).

I know Elis is a good player and at times a one man highlight real. But even though Heinz doesn't come up with the individual play Elis does the rest of the backline looks better with Heinz on the field. I really think Elis is bad for the All Blacks. Though another part of me thinks that in really tight games where the backlines don't really play much part anyway maybe he's ideal - but who wants to see that?

I disagree with people saying now isn't the best time to blood in new players. This is the perfect time. Without meaning to disrespect Ireland, these three tests should be won. Ireland's club teams are firing well, but their national teams has looked fairly average. There is no better time than the present to play some of the new guys. To make my point, Kieran Read made his debut in 2008, but only started firing in 2010. He needed that early exposure to become a world class player. Other players like Dagg and Vito were also tested during the June Test Series.

Also, what are the chances we'll want to play new players in a Tri Nations match? Pretty much nill. So pretty much the only time we'll be able to test out new players will be the EoYT, which seems like a long time to wait when picking players that are on form.

1. SBW

Sorry about the formatting. SBW has been great this year.

I take the point about Masaga, I am not too sure on him myself but there aren't many good wings in New Zealand right now. At a push I'd include Andre Taylor on the left wing who just oozes x-factor. All of his tries have been solo as I recall.

Barrett will be better than Cruden in a year, I would include Cruden this year just to see him **** it up, he was awful during the world cup so I don't understand why the sudden interest, he has always been good at ITM and Super level. Cruden and SBW are not the reason the Chiefs are winning. The fact that they finally have a forward pack to go along with their always brilliant back three are the reason why.

Can someone bring up some stats on SBW to please explain to me why he is the best? Because there must be something in those stats that I'm missing because I certainly don't see the hype. Remember the World Cup semi? Comes on for one minute and gets a yellow card, such a liability.

1. Not many good wingers in New Zealand right now? Sean Maitland, Hosea Gear, Julian Savea, Lelia Masaga, Zac Guildford, Cory Jane, Tim Nanai-Williams, Rudy Wulf, Kade Poki...All have been fairly impressive this season. Masaga has got average defense, but he's always been very dangerous on attack. Wouldn't mind seeing him getting another test over a few others out there, but he does need to improve his defense.

2. Cruden was actually fantastic during the World Cup. He ran the show extremely well in the World Cup semi-final, even landing a drop goal. Had he not been injured for the final, I think he would have closed out well. This has also been his best season at 1st 5/8th, which he is running a smooth backline, been very good on defense and is breaking the line well. I really like Barrett, but right now Cruden is a bit safer while still having x-factor. Taylor on the other hand is not my choice.

Completely agreed- if anything the All Black's have an overabundance of talent in the back three. So many young talented players that there isn't much opportunity for anyone to nail the shirt down for more than one or two years at a time.

Cruden is a far safer kicker than Barrett- as a Hurricanes fan I'm certainly biased towards Barrett (I really do believe he'll be better than Cruden in a year or two) but even I couldn't advocate playing Barrett above Cruden at this point in time. Cruden has enough ability to run an All Black back line and is a safe enough kicker to be playing at the international level- he's no Dan Carter but he's good enough to be on the bench.

Really though, just about any other nation would be happy with Cruden or Barrett- NZ have been spoiled by the years of Dan Carter's reign.

Sorry about the formatting. SBW has been great this year.

Hurricanes have had about 30% territory and possession on average this year. Blues are last on the table. I would have thought that in light of these facts that SBW and Cruden would be miles ahead on stats, especially considering Nonu hasn't played all the games this season and the Chiefs have a brilliant forward pack giving them go ahead ball. On that basis I would say Nonu is the best 12.

New Zealand wingers aren't that good this year. All the wingers you have mentioned have looked pretty average apart from Jane, Nanai-Williams and Masaga.

One thing I wouldn't be confident on if I were a kiwi is a defensive fullback. All your fullbacks are suspect on defence. Robbie Robinson, Taylor, Dagg and B.Smith have all been exposed big time on defence this year. Dagg's defensive lapses was the cause of the Bulls two tries in their encounter. Taylor was exposed on numerous times. Robinson has always been a wild card and Ben Smith has also had his critics for defence.

The way I see it, we ahve two conundrums:

1. Do you pick any of the experienced ABs (Nonu, Weepu, etc) despite their incrdibly poor form, at the expense of young talent (i.e. any of the young Halfbacks, or picking Nonu over a performing outside back (as SBW/Kahui or even Dan could cover 12).
2. Which of the young and impresive talent, if any, get picked in the final squad? I certainly understand the need for experience at this stage. But Hansen can't get too conservative.

Justin Marshall seems to think conservative is the way to go...

Average? NZ wingers are up there in terms of tries scored, and most inluding Wulf from the hapless Blues, have looked dangerous.

In regards to defensive fullback, again, I think you are mistaken. But that's alright.

There is always Corey Jane who is an excellent defender. ;)

********.

Nonu has just has much opportunity to get go forward as SBW does. Whether or not your team's playing well also shouldn't affect your defensive stats. If the Canes had such little possession then they'd be making ridiculously more tackles - which they clearly aren't.

Maybe because Barrett is missing them all??..

The Canes have had the least amount of posession in each game. Difference is, they're probably the best counter attacking team in the tournament. I think they've scored the most tries in the tournament so far(I could be wrong) but they haven't won the most games so I guess this puts your theory to the sword.

As for the Nonu-SBW comparison,.... Do you really think SBW would look as good as he does with the Chiefs if he played for the Blues this year?.. Don't think so.

My point was more that the Hurricanes centres are still making fewer tackles than SBW, even though they have far less possession - in theory they have far more opportunities to tackle, in the same way that the Chiefs players have more opportunities to attack.

And I don't think any player would look just as good with the Blues as with their current team, but you can't just say to a player 'it doesn't matter how well you're playing, you're in a good team so you clearly aren't good enough'. That doesn't make any sense. I think SBW would currently look better for the Blues than Nonu does, however.

Why am I mistaken? You guys rushed off Mils when he was the best fullback you will have for a while. He may not have his attacking flair like in the old days but he defended like a king and did the basics right on attack, setting other people up when needed. You now have a bunch of selfish fullbacks who play like wings and have the defensive frailties of European flyhalfs.

Go watch the Bulls vs Crusaders game again and tell me if you think Dagg has a good defensive game or not. He slipped both times that any fullback worth his salt would have handled quite safely. Yet Dagg is the best fullback you guys have.

Again. Mistaken. :) Mils was good. See the textual intonation.

Dagg (and the other so called 'selfish fullbacks) is not (yet) at that level of defense simply because not many people are, or have been. And you expect a player who is early in his career, who has yet to reach or even get close to his prime; to already possess HOF-level or world-class skills as Mils once did?

Your use of adjectives give you away.

You see the preference (*NOTE PREFERENCE and NOT NEGLECT of defence) for attack as 'selfish', and should not diminsh their arguably ever-growing development on their respective defensive games.

Or would you rather kicking/soccer-type fullbacks like the French? ;)

Now tell me you're not mistaken. :) Or rather delusional or hopeful, to be kind.

Man stats are soooo boring to analyse.. lol We could go on all day, Difference could be, the way their defensive systems are set up, it's obvious that the Chiefs defensive system is top notch this year and it seems every player knows exactly where they should be and who does what regardless of who's wearing the jersey this week or that week, their defensive patterns remain the same, they are stopping front foot ball and causing trouble for the attacking teams whereas the Hurricanes are just making their tackles count. Their loosies[as most loosies] are making all the tackles for them and the centres are merely pushing out and taking their man. You could say the same about tries being scored by the Chiefs, they have had more posession but aren't scoring more tries... I say, it all depends on what happens on the day!..

And I don't think any player would look just as good with the Blues as with their current team, but you can't just say to a player 'it doesn't matter how well you're playing, you're in a good team so you clearly aren't good enough'. That doesn't make any sense.

I am not saying this at all. I'd probably be the last man to say something like that. SBW deserves full credit, the man cops more flak than most men would get in ten lifetimes and he doesn't even deserve all the critics. But, it's hard to compare two men's performances when they aren't on a level playing field. The entire Blues squad is struggling, it's not just one week for 10 minutes, it has been close to every minute of the season so far. Look at the Hurricanes last year, they weren't as murky as the Blues are this season. They weren't as bad throughout the entire squad, they had their strengths and when Nonu returned to the frey he did some outstanding work in that 12 jersey. I believe if the Blues were going as good as they were last year, Nonu's star would be shining alot brighter than it is now.

I think SBW would currently look better for the Blues than Nonu does, however.

Lol, I don't

The problemx with this statement is that it's just plain wrong, all of it, at least in my view.

Zac Guildford has been good since coming back from his angry downtime. He still can't beat a player 1 on 1 to save his life, but he still link well and has scored some good tries.

Julian Savea has been fantastic, probably thwe most improved player of the competition. Leading the competition in broken tackles and has corrected a majority of his errors of last season. Being suggested to give him a go in the All Blacks.

Hosea Gear has generally been in fantastic form, leading the competition in running metres. He had an average game last game, but otherwise has been lethal and has had a massive workrate, which is what he was criticised for last season.

Sean Maitland has been injured for much of the season, but looked the part before hand. Lead the competition in tries scored last season.

Ben Smith having poor defense? Who are these critics? He's a pretty safe defender. Israel Dagg and Andre Taylor have good a fairly good defense, while Taylor is leading the competition in tries scored, scoring spectacular tries pretty much every game (8 tries in 10 tests). Mils Muliaina was often an extremely selfish fullback. He'd often take the contact or try for a break instead of taking the overlap. His 2010 form frustrated the hell out of me, as he was the only outside back which he make look at all good while he was there. Clearly Dagg outplayed him by the RWC and set up the only try in the semi-final. He also was 31 years old. He was slowing down and wasn't in as good a form as others. It would be obsurd to play a fullback who would be 35 years old come the next world cup, who was not in form, ahead of a 23 year old exciting talent who was in terrific form.

It really doesn't matter who you guys play. We'll be missing our first choice wing PO'C and probably a good few more we're also terrible against you guys. Therefore I think you guys should play a team of:

1. Mackintosh
2. Flynn
3. Smith
4. Bekhuis
5. Williams
6. D. Braid
7. Thompson
8. Messam
9. Weepu
10. Anscombe
11. Savea
12. Bateman
13. Ranger
14. Stanley
15. Maitland

It's not even that bad a team for God's sake some excellent players and prospects. I'm not trying to make general feeling of complacency in N.Z. or anything....

Btw Rhyer is trolling you guys. The strength in depth in the back three is ridiculous and SBW is clearly not awful. Also when props can do this:

The wingers must be amazing.

If the wing depth was that amazing in New Zealand then they wouldn't have played Richard Kahui there during the world cup. Simple. They have good attack but don't bring an all round game.

Put it this way, I'd feel a lot more comfortable with Rob Kearney, Kurtley Beale or Joe Pietersen at the back than Dagg, Smith, Taylor or Robinson.

The only reason you guys can afford to have such shitty defensive players in these positions is because of Conrad Smith and Dan Carter who basically do all of your backline defending.
