Game of Thrones

Why what has Rickon done ever like seriously? Why is he in the books.

Just bought the DVD set. With the hype thats around it I hope it lives up to its expectations.

Not HBO's best but still very good... behind LOTR the second best fantasy film/tv available.

Personally I think as a series it does a lot of things better than LOTR. More believable characters (ie. self interest, shades of grey, etc.), more political manoeuvring , so on, so forth.

Agree with the whole character motives, political machinations and ambiguity to a degree (but that's just HBO 101 & the main reason why they wanted to adapt the books) but due to its format (which helps propel the positives you mentioned) the production values (while still AMAZING for tv) can look ropey and bump the viewer right out of the fantasy. Also while the script possesses some amazing one line retorts (generally kept for Jerome Flynns character) it can seem rushed unlike LOTR's.

Also we have only seen season 1 yet so very difficult to judge.

PS. You can't get much more "character self interest and shades of grey" than Saruman, Denathor and right at the end Frodo... maybe worth a rewatch.

I expect he'll turn important soon. I personally expect him to become "Lord of Winterfell, Warden of the North" so on so forth or at least a puppet leader.
With regards to LOTR similarites, I think the carachters in this book are far deeper than in LOTR. For instance in GOT I found myself liking an incest fella who pushes children off of roof's, because GRRM lets you see things from their point of view.

Once again, spoiler central.

Rickon is supposed to be very similar in character to Edd Stark's older brother as far as I can tell. He's hot headed, impulsive and rash, as shown by Shaggy Dog's behaviour. He's over in Skagos at the moment and has Stannis' hand running after him, hardly a pointless character if he can guarantee Stannis the Manderly's and White Harbour. In any case, with Robb dead, Bran like to stay North of the wall and Jon Snow a ******* (I'd be very surprised if we've seen the last of him) he's the heir of Winterfell.

So Lynam, he's a pretty vital figure all things considered.

I got the book last Friday. (Largely due to this forum) I'm enjoying it a lot more than I expected to, I don't usually like the whole Fantasy lark but this is great.

It's easy to forget that A Song of Ice and Fire is fantasy, for a lot of the time you just think it's general Medieval type happenings

Yeah, his research is top notch. By all accounts he's put an awful lot of effort into trying to replicate medieval life as much as possible.

I'm planning on trying to fit the commonly seen phrase " as much use as nipples on a breastplate" into a rugby related thread
eg Tomas O'Leary is about as much use as nipples on a breastplate

You're about as much use as nipples on a breastplate.:whip:

Anyone catch the first episode of the new series?

I thought it was pretty good, although it did feel very introductory if you get me. Also, perhaps it was a bit rushed, but you get that with the TV show.

Hardly a spoiler or anything this, but don't read if you haven't read the books I guess. Would have loved if they'd done the proper prologue with Maester what's his face and Melissandre. It was included, but it could have been done better and would have set a nice tone. They could have dropped that 'last season on...' thing to include it.

I felt that with the first episode of the first series, so if it follows the same trend it will only get better:).

Very good, that was :D

They love using people from Skins, don't they?
Chris and now Cassie as well.

Just watched the next episode (they put it on "HBO GO", their online thing in America, last Sunday but I waited till today to watch it so I didn't have 10 days to wait for the next) - I'm not too sure.
While it's a good episode, they've started changing it a fair bit. I can understand some of the changes, as in the book it takes a while to explain what's gone on, but others aren't really needed (the bit right at the end of the episode for example).
I think it's just because I'm comparing it to the book - by itself it'd be great, but I prefer the way it's gone on in the book.

I watched the entire first season on DVD.

Was gutted to see Sean Bean's character being killed off.

I can't use that because im outside America, which is really annoying because its hard to find it elsewhere
