EOYT: England v New Zealand, 01/12/2012

Congratulations England. Long time between drinks in the Twickenham bar (ten years)

Those earlier losses to Australia and South Africa will be quickly forgotten and forgiven. England finished with a 50/50 record in the Autumn Internationals, and who would bet on Mr. Lancaster's allegedly temporary status as England coach not becoming a permanent appointment.

Of course, I can't finish without saying a word or two about the refereeing of George Clancy (come on guys, it wouldn't be me if I didn't say something!)

Not that it would have made any difference, but he was utter shite.

Firstly, it is one the "loosest" policing of fixed offside lines I have seen in a long time. The backs and pillars of both sides were allowed to infringe the ruck and midfield offside lines with impunity.

Secondly, the penalty against Read at the restart after England's second penalty goal was for something right out of Mr Clancy's own private Law book..."Jumping way too early". Since when is it an infringement to jump early in General Play? Read jumped, had eyes only on the ball, and got a hand to the ball at the same time as the England jumper. This was just ********.

Also, around the 45th minute, Brown clung onto the ball to slow things down when it was NZ's penalty. This perhaps ought to have been a YC; a situation no different to throwing away the ball in touch. In the handbags immediately following this, the Citing Officer might want to look at Alex Goode who came from some distance away to stick his hand very close to Liam Messam's. Some other angles are needed to get a clear view, but it looked very suspect to me. Hands around face from behind is a definite no-no.

Overall, England thoroughly deserved to win. They looked sharper in defence, and took their opportunities well.

It was a bridge too far for New Zealand. I guess the almost continuous 10 month, 16-18 match Super Rugby and 14 test programme finally caught up with them on the last day.

Some historical perspective

► 17 points is England's biggest ever win over NZ - previously 13-0 (in 1936!!)
► It was New Zealand's first loss in an Autumn International since 2002 (England 31-28)
► 17 points is New Zealand's equal 2nd worst loss in a test match (Australia by 21 in 1999, South Africa by 17 in 1928)

I absolutely agree England won this fair and square, and then some; I'm 100% embracing that. I mean, none of my teams played, so it's not like I'm biased.
But yes, it seems fatigue and other psychological-oriented reasons hindered this match for NZ. They obviously weren't themselves. They reacted, at two separate moments - but that's just their pride rushing to the surface and taking command. But smt just wasn't right for NZ today...

Again: absolutely ZERO asterisk on England's win. NZ showed up and knew exactly who they were playing and had all the time to prepare etc...
But the fact remains: they were off today...and not great last week either.

Lancaster already is on an extended contract, but those losses shouldn't be forgotten by anyone, particularly the coaching staff. I'm delighted with this win, but it means very little if it's not backed up, and that means remembering what we've changed over the course of this international window - and not going back.

As a Welshman: You b*******s England, you just had to make today worse didnt you.

As a rugby fan: That was bloody incredible!!

B******s

:p

What a horrible morning (the loss, but mostly hearing about that Kansas City Chiefs player).

Nothing worse for me as an AB than losing to the poms. Losing to the aussies; annoying but expected. To the boks; great rivals and and respectful of this team.

But England. Smh. Effing annoying mainly because of their press. Just sucks. It really does. England played well.

In saying that I hope a rain of dogshit on the British press.

lol you may not be biased towards England; but you're probably one of the biggest anti-AB/haters on here. Hard to take any of your comments regarding the ABs seriously. :)

The problem with having the best team is that your less used to losing than the rest of us :p.

Also, it was an australian who ruined the british press so... blame the ozzies!

lol really? who's the aussie?

To be clear, not taking anything from England, they played great kiwi rugby. I'm not the type of fan to diminish a great performance from the opposition (I am however, the type of fan to get annoyed at dumb sportswriters talking crap about my teams and their palyers though! :p).

I just hope no one posts any articles from the British press or I'm gonna go apeshit!

Murdoch.

I also suggest we rename and repurpose this thread the Brian Moore punditry thread.

It's so strange...where do ppl find the evidence for their conclusions ?!...I srs dropped my jaw when I read this. You must be so biased that you turn all defensive when I'm merely pointing out smt to criticize about them...
I'm trying to think of comments I've made here...
"France deserved penalties towards the end of the 2011 final, the ref's calls were downright suspect".
"NZ start panicking when trailing in a game and can't keep their composure".

I'm not sure which one of those FACTS makes you think I'm...- hehe, this is hilarious ! - one of the biggest AB HATERS !!!
How monumentally exaggerated is that !!

I've never hated them really...I'm actually currently a fan. They **** me off once in a while, but I've been a fan all my life, yeh (well, rugby fan life).
That's neither here nor there though, but it is what it is.

About losing to the "poms". That's not nearly the worst. My gag reflexes were going NUTS when I saw Chris Ashton approaching the try line, the eerie mechanism of his facial muscles depicting a...'smile'...and the hop...the arms cocked back.....

dude...Ashton went swan dive on your Allblacks, and it pains me to say it TRUST ME.
I'm sorry for making your misery so much more horrible by bringing that up.:p

DUDE: you're still the best team by far, it's ONE test match...

Well well, did not expect this, well done Roses.
Just makes me wonder if the long and demanding international fixtures ain't starting to show more than in previous years (SH - provincial + Super rugby + Rugby Championship (4 Nations))

Not as if NH don't have long seasons:
Premiership/HEC -> Autumn Internationals -> Premiership/HEC -> Six Nations -> Prem/hec -> Summer tour -> wash rince repeat

All Blacks loss to England due to 'Stomach bug'?

We know in the lead up to the test their was a 'bug' that affected the ABs.

They said it would not affect them.

However after the match, you could see they played differently. Very tired and lethargic.

Do you think the bug assisted in their loss against England?

Discuss.

I think this is about it for me, what it shows is that on their day any one of the top 8 teams can beat the others (although apparently saying so last week made me a poor winner).

I doubt I will take too much from the match and certainly don't think it is cause for concern the better team won on the day however if it happens 3 or 4 times in a row then I will worry about it.

Was wondering when the "tired" excuse would surface

C'mon, when England or any team loses a game, it's just par for the course for people to go looking for factors and reasons which may or may not have contributed to the loss. I've seen you yourself issuing out your reasons or ideas as to why a team has lost. People quite rightly who support any team look to coaches, inexperienced players, retirement of top players, injuries, fatigue, travel, wrong squad mix. England fans do it, French, Welsh, Scottish, Argentinian and yes New Zealanders. We're allowed to look towards contributing factors in a loss like any team.

Comments above don't make you look wise like you gazed into a crystal ball and foretold the poor sportsmanship of New Zealanders. All you foretold was the standard reaction of any team, fans or even more relevantly media.

Many New Zealanders have said that England were clearly the best team on the day without buts. It normal a few hours later to ask yourself why and what made things not go so well. To say that England playing exceptionally well is something that's not getting noticed whilst potential reasons for the loss are would be flat out wrong.
