EOYT: England v Fiji, 10/11/2012

Tom Youngs has a club shirt because of his brother and injurys to better players.

He has an England shirt because of his club shirt and injuries to vastly superior players.

Paice is lower down the pecking order for good reason.

I agree that neither would be there had it not been injuries to other players.

For me if Young is continuously missing his mark and enabling the opponents to turn the ball over I don't think he should be starting, hopefully though this does not happen.

Shame I am away this weekend with the gf and going to miss the matches.

tbf on Tom Youngs, bad throwing is something that should be easily coached out of a player. He'll be on throwing drills repeatedly for the next few weeks I reckon, and even if he isn't perfect in the next few matches, it would probably point out bad coaching if he wasn't able to do any better than he did against Gloucester.

And I can see why he's been picked in terms of potential. I guess that the idea is to fast-track him into being a hooker who thrives in the loose like Brits and Edmonds does. It gives us an a completely different style of player to Hartley. Of course, it's pretty unacceptable for a player with 10(?) games at Premiership level by the age of 26 to be starting for England, but I can see the temptation to play him when so many players are unavailable. I'd guess that he's throwing lineout balls well enough in training to be given the start, so let's hope it translates to match day. I always find it hard to tell how hookers fare in the scrum, but how is he getting on there?

If there were no injuries and the EPS were to be picked now, who would everyone have as their hookers atm?

j'nuh, that seems pretty wide off the mark to me. Youngs has worked like mad on his darts, and most weeks he's got Cockerill looking over his shoulder as he does it. They're still not good enough - and that's not a fault with the coaching, or the effort, but simply a reflection that accurate lineout throwing is a lot harder than it looks.

With everyone fit, my EPS hookers would have been Hartley, Brooker and Webber. Gray, Youngs and Lindsay in the Saxons.

Although, having said that, Buchanan and Haywood would be coming into the reckoning really quick.

havent seen much of tom youngs, but looked up his throwing in stats which say he is 81% accurate which isnt as bad as i thought

Slightly off topic..see that it is a full house against Fiji (wot that about: Ed).....

What are the ticket prices in comparison to say next week's game?

If they are similar one would have to say ......................!!

Harsh yellow for Care there. On the positive side, Youngs' line out throwing has been solid so far.

Oka, penalty try from a scrum, fine - but we've got to be able to move in the huge swathes of space constantly opening up - we won't be able to rely on scrums against the top 3

England now in the ascendancy, Penalty try, this could get ugly for Fiji in the 2nd half.

I've been very disappointed with Waldrom in this game. He's given no real control at the back, and hasn't been very spatially aware

Agreed. I say bring on Morgan for next week. I also thought Monye was a little underwhelming - Ashton and sharples seems like a good combination for Australia.

Definitely has to be Morgan you're right. About Monye though, I don't hugely rate him but thought he looked useful today. But he's not the future - for me one of the best things about today was seeing Sharples show Lancaster what he can do. He's the second wing, nailed on starter next week in my view.

Dan Cole is world class. An absolutely key player and utterly irreplaceable. I don't feel Flood or Care had great games but they're still without doubt next weeks starters. Flood didn't really do anything except choose whether to pass flat or deepen the play. He didn't seem aware enough of the mismatches, and could have made himself a more attacking threat. I thought youngs went fine. If he throws like that for the next 3 weeks I'm more than happy for him to be starting.

Good to hear Youngs went well at the lineout.
Going to try and catch extended highlights of this somewhere (when there's loads of tries in a match, as there were in this one, the usual highlights are pretty much just the tries) - sounds like a solid win but with lots to improve on (heard that, despite our scrum being on top, we also arsed up a fair bit there?).

How were Barritt and Tuilagi as a partnership? Same old same old, or were they allowed to actually play rather than just run at people?

Tom Youngs impressed me. As I'd guessed, his lineout throwing was much improved. Perhaps a factor was that Fiji didn't really contest many lineouts, but he still made no mistake in it. Perhaps the lineout will have to be more inventive against SANZAR though, and perhaps he'll still struggle. But it's a step in the right direction, and he's a decent carrier.

Cole is clearly the first name on the team sheet.

Waldrom was the worst England player on the field, and I'm normally a fan of him. There are some finer edges to Morgan's game that he needs to work out, but he still deserves a start. He hasn't done anything wrong to lose his place (admittedly, not much particularly flash either), but his ball carrying is more destructive.

Care had a lot of ups and downs but still deserves another run out. Flood did nothing special, still think Burns should be starting.

Sharples and Ashton(/JSD) are the perfect wing combination. Sharples is the kind of player who thrives on hogging a wing, so let him keep the 14 shirt. Ashton, on the other hand, is at his best coming in off the wing, running decent lines and supporting loose play, so his gamestyle shouldn't suffer too much from a switch to 11. Goode to continue at fullback, he was impressive today.

Not sure what to make of Tuilagi. He's one of the most destructive runners in the game and gives England some good meters. He also showed off a few nice offloads today. But he's the kind of player that butchers overlaps because he's too prone to running instead of passing. If he doesn't improve much at this, I'd like Lancaster to consider giving Jonathan Joseph some starts.

Was impressed with England's ball carrying and passing, most I have seen them pass ball in ages, hopefully can keep that going against the tougher nations but for now, job done and come in England!
