England v Scotland, 02/02/13

Bwaha... Paul Doran Jones may be the thin replica of Diggin, but never ever embarrass yourself by implying Biggs has a semblance of pace in his body. It's only yourself you're fooling!

????
I literally have no idea where you're coming from on this one?
Have you never seen him play? Even last week vs Wolfhounds he gassed someone (Irish winger or fullback, dunno) chasing down the ball.

Yes Oliver, many times. In person. He made HMS Banahan look effective last time I visited the rec - That is not a compliment.

I said "slow version of Paul Diggin". It's all in context.

Most of the games I watched, yes they did pass a lot, but the passing was poor and ineffectual. i.e the backs were often way too deep, taking passes at half pace and then accelerating. They often didn't make the gain line. The passes were often slow and to the man as opposed to in front of him, so he could accelerate onto the ball. And I don't really think throwing lots of passes necessarily means a team is playing expansively. They could be lots of short passes off the ruck, or pops to support runners. I don't really recall any decent passages of play or set moves with the 10 for example cutting out the centres, flat pass to 15, who's accelerating into the gap flat out. And that's what they need to do - learn how to play an expansive game effectively. Any team can pass the ball out from 9 - 14, but to actually do it with accurate passing and at full pace is a very hard thing to do. NZ are supreme at this. They go from side to side, stretching the defence and eventually holes open up and a flat, bullet pass from Carter finds an outside back sprinting into a gap. The ball goes straight to his hands and he doesn't have to break stride. Most teams try to emulate this, but simply don't have the skills. And that's why NZ are so good, they do the basics so well.

Scotland’s issues are they always make a mistake at a crucial point that could have lead to points, or now in more recent times they have horrible support. They make breaks but have not been able to capitalize on it.

It's a fair point you've made lots of breaks, but I wouldn't say they come from an expansive game really - and I'd agree with Zed that some of your attempts to execute one have been horrendous. And I'm English, I know a lot about horrendous expansive rugby.

Yep:

Beating Charlie Sharples (on the turn though):

He's obviously not Jonny May fast. It's a trade-off for power and he's pretty decent at breaking a tackle. But he's got a decent burst of pace and is by no means slow.

Speaking of May how has he been playing? I really expected him to be coming to the front of things by now. is he injured or something? Always thought he was such a talented player when i saw him...imagine

11. May
14. Wade

Amazing attacking threat don't really know about the defence though

Got it in one. He picked up a ****ly injury back in late-September and kept being put back. He's had two matches in the Amlin in January, apparently looked lively in the second match and scored 2 tries, although apparently still not back to being as fit as he could be. I agree, I think May's actually a more creative player than Sharples, though Sharples is better technically.

Also don't know why Scotland is putting Laidlaw at 9. I know he has played there a lot, but most of his games with Scotland have been at 10, and same for club. Also I thought Henry Pyrgos did great in November when he came on. From what I have heard he has continued to improve with his club.

It is an interesting selection by Johnson, but maybe you guys know something, or he knows something.

I'd imagine Maitland will end up in the centres at some point. He's a classy player.

I don't even know what I'm expecting with the team announcement tomorrow... I normally have a pretty good idea.

Most likely seems to be 10 Farrell 12 Twelvetrees 13 Barritt?
Or 12 Barritt 13 Twelvetrees? They're both inside centres after all...
Or 10 Flood 12 Farrell 13 Barritt

Hold on, I must be really stupid...at what point did Burns get sent home? I expected him to be in the 23 because I literally forgot that Toby Flood exists. Mehhh disappointed now...

Yup.

Don't know about anyone else, but the fact we're trying to make a centre partnership out of two fly-halves and two inside-centres perturbs me.

Lancaster and the other coaches must have seen something about TT that they sent JJ back to his club. In fact i think they never were keen on him starting from the start regardless. They don't have much confidence in JJ to throw him as a starter for England yet.

Barrit for all his bashers on this forum PLAYS how Lancaster wants him to. He organises the defence positioning well (which you need from a centre) and has very good timing/positional play. His form for Saracens he is more attacking(ish) role. He is Lancaster's favourite boys as he plays the way Lancaster wants England to play -hard defence to break down, but using the other centre (Manu) as the attacking threat. Lancaster's mentors in the book he keeps referring to the SF49ers coach always said a good defence is the most important platform to win you games as you need to be in the game 20-10mins before full time to give yourself time to positional yourself to kill the game off. A hard defence frustrates opposition, forces them to play more attacking. A tight defence is what Lancaster's ideology is based on -hard to beat if the other side cannot score (or outscore you) so your always in the fight to the end by a few points.

I think its quite probable TT will start (unless he had some dodgy training games which worry's Lancaster and co.) He has the variety -kicking game, passing, vision which we lack at centre. So be sure THIS will be a different gameplay from the centres compared to the usual centre pairing.

What i will find interesting is what game plan we will play. We have good ball kickers from hand and now a good passer in the centre. Will Lancaster ask his side to play more? or play the territory game and use our forwards to lead and break holes for the centre/backs to exploit? Regardless of the game plan i think Lancaster will not deviate to much from the usual tight defence type of game.
Scotland have a BIG pack so i expect Lancaster to play more expansive game than usual, causing more movement of the ball as Scotland have good players who slow down the ball a lot.

I would of liked Lawes to start but i except Parling/JL to start unless one of them have a poor game. I expect Scotland to be VERY competitive in this game and will not be surprised if we only win by 2/3points.

Some very good points mstar. I'm completely with you on Barritt - I think he's excellent and well worth his spot. Probably the best 12 defensively in the tournament and it gives me confidence knowing he's there alongside 36 on senior debut. However, the worry is that between Farrell, Twelvetrees, and Barritt, and only one specialist winger, there's almost literally no attacking threat.

I'm very happy for Lawes to be on the bench - Parling and Launhbury will be busy all game and around the field. Lawes is best when having a high impact half an hour, such as in that Heineken cup game against Castres.

Pretty much as expected I think - I'm just so happy they didn't try and put Farrel or Floor at centre :) And great chance for Twelvetrees, hope he takes it.

When did Hartley sign for Irish?

Anyway - Youngs ahead of Care? Why?? It's not based on form, skill nor temperament.
