England v New Zealand - 2 November 2024

I don't really understand the upset here TBH. He was actually saying he wanted the Haka to be more confrontational like it was in the Samoa RL game or not bother. Is that really that controversial?

He said it in 2 posts though. The first - bin it, it's ridiculous - was the one that caused the storm. The 2nd was only any good if challenged, which is fair enough.

On Marler himself. He's said before that he sees himself taking on the villain role in matches and squads to protect his team mates. It's affected his mental health, but he still does it so others can focus on their game. Wonder if there is an aspect of this here. Leave camp, say something controversial, rest of the team can prepare in peace and quiet.
With all due respect this has got to be some of the biggest load of ******** I've read. Not in the sense you're making it up, I believe you when you say he's said that, but what a joke that guy is, Mental health problems or not.

"Joe Marler is right - rugby has indulged bullying, pompous Haka for too long".

That's the headline from the ever shy and retiring Stephen Jones in the Times. Fair to say that he doesn't sit on the fence in the article.
Keep it coming English media. Something else to stick on the changing room wall prior to KO

I think there's a bit of an underestimation as to the extent of how comments pre match can be used as fuel, and can affect the team whose "side" said it.

I'd dismissed it before the England v Ireland game this year but Doris stressed that Ireland didn't underestimate England that day, it was on their minds. Stringer and Heaslip being knobs definitely gave England an extra bit of dog that they needed to front up against us.

Sexton says in his book that before Ireland's 2018 game v Wales, Joe Schmidt had been calling Gareth Davies "bonus point" all week because he said that Wales were coming over to win with a bonus point.

POM having a dig at Kinghorn after the world cup pool game last year too. And even Retallick and Reiko going at POM and Sexton after the final whistle for what happened in the 2022 series (which will again be used in reverse next week!)

I'd be amazed if NZ weren't using this, couped up in a camp like international ones are logic and rationale goes out the window. Its a bunch of posturing and macho stuff that goes on in there.

I think theres usual nonsense that goes over their heads Haka, Principality Roof, Hogg gobbing off about the English. Like if it always happens nobody gives a damn. Its a media storm hard to get riled about it yet again.

When it's something out of leftfield it can be done.
This is just guess work really and maybe some of our NZ posters can offer a better insight into this, but I imagine the players, fans, everyone really, are much more sensitive about the Haka due to it being a deeply cultural thing than say compared to how wales feel about the roof or some player gobbing off about a player or something. As I say, though, just a feeling I have more than anything.

To be fair, I can't remember a player within the oppostion set up having swipes at the haka.

Like it's hardly a leap to "arrogant, they don't respect us etc..." from there.

McKenzie to come on and change the game, sneaking the win in the last few mins.

The nearer we get to kick off the less I'm fancying our chances. Not a great ABs but still plenty of strike power and experience and you'd have to think they'd take a higher % of their chances.

Amazed at how many caps the Barretts have racked up.
