The thing with Hartley is he might not even be Saints number 1 Hooker come end of season.

Honestly I really really rate Heywood.

Given Jones' penchant for it: can Heywood strike?

Pretty sure he can. If I remember correctly, against Glasgow on the Glasgow ball the ball was just stuck in the middle of the tunnel and Haywood hooked it back against the head. Could do a lot worse than him imo

Bristol will want a decent wedge for him, especially as they're a very rich club - this is good news as it shows the RFU is going to work to give Jones what he wants.

As much as the pack were a shower in the World Cup, we're still replacing a Six Nations and Lions tour winning forwards coach, who has eight years international experience, with Steve Borthwick. I can't help but feel uneasy.

I'm a bit surprised as well that Jones would pick Borthwick. Presumably the RFU have given him a blank slate and a bottomless pit of money to get assistants, so Borthwick must have made a very good impression with Japan. He does seem the anorak type (a bit like Ben Kay) who'd get a sick pleasure out of studying lineout tapes.

All that said, I'm still more interested in the backs coaches. That's really where we'll get a hint of Jones' intentions.

I know he signed for Bristol as a forwards coach, wasn't he a specific lineout coach for Japan?
Having extensively worked with him before I imagine Eddie knows his limitations and whether he needs to more forwards coaches than just Borthwick (I imagine he will get in, at least, a scrum coach though - seems like Borthwick was getting a gig at a lower level to learn the forwards coach role).

I'd be surprised if we don't end up with two forwards coaches, one line out, one scrum. They can then share the rest of the forward work together.

Sanderson I agree sounds a good option alongside Borthwick.

Also intrigued about backs coaches.

I do think that if the likes of Baxter have international ambitions they need to start getting involved at some point in the next 18 months.

I'd want 6 years from Jones, during which time we will want significant improvement.

At least a couple of grand slams minimum and a strong showing in RWC.

We want some English coaches involved in any success so consideration can be given to either retaining Jones for 8 years or replacing him after 6 if an English coach is seemed necessary.

Exciting times...

Piling Andy Farrell into a trebuchet and firing him into the sea.

Surely better to fling him and his disease against the walls of Cardiff so that its defenders become diseased and infim before our assault on its walls?
Never waste useful ammunition!

Since Eddie's got a maximum of 10 players to drop for the Six Nations, and 2 extra places to fill, who would everyone get rid of from the WC squad? Wholesale slaughter or just a little tinkering?

My candidates for the knacker's yard (replacements/additions):

Burgess (Burrell)
Goode (Rockoduguni)
Barritt (Hill)
Webber (Cowan-Dickie)
Easter (Ewers)
Wigglesworth (Simpson)
Wood (Croft)
(Kvesic)
(Fraser)

Plus Daly as injury cover for Joseph.

It's likely there will be some hit and miss in the beginning with Jones' selections . He's getting to know players in a short space of time and some false starts should be expected. For example, if he watched Saracens against Ulster he might have come to the conclusion that Alex Goode is the best full back on the planet. This is where it's important that the other coaches have good taste in players, which is why Farrell is a problem!

I'm hoping we can avoid 'Mouritz Botha syndrome' (alternately known as 'Matt Stevens-itis')

Based on form there should ideally be a Wasps tinge to the squad - as you've said, Simpson, Daly, Cooper-Woolley probably not this time.
I doubt he'll see getting rid of Barritt as a priority.

I'd see getting rid of Goode, Wood, Wigglesworth, and Kruis as the priority

why are some people discussing keeping Farrell I thought by the sounds of things coming out the camp he was essentially "the main problem"

My 10 players to drop would be:
Webber - Hartley (just for this 6N's)
Marler - Mullan
Parling - Attwood
Lawes - Itojie
Wood - Robshaw (6)
Robshaw (7) - Kvesic/Fraser
Easter - Beaumont/Ewers
Wigglesworth - Simpson
Barritt - Hill
Goode - Foden

With Cips and Daly added to the squad

Would be my changes ATM.

Is Mullan not already in the squad? That's an oversight - yes I'd definitely bring in Mullan, probably for Marler.
I like him more in many ways but Mako would seem pretty lucky to keep his place. I love having him on the field but it's worrying knowing that your loosehead definitely WON'T be able to solidy your set-piece.
