England EPS 2016/17 season.

So Haskell out for 4-6 months. Reconstructive surgery on that toe injury. Means he'll miss the Autumn tests, be interesting to see how the back row looks now.

Well you have to keep Robshaw and binny. It's just who Eddie chooses for 7 then. Will we see Harrison again or someone new?

Clifford the most likely option, I think.
Unless they move Itoje to 6 and start Launch or Lawes

Clifford seems unlikely to me given how the 3rd test played out and given he'll be even less of a 7 come the Autumn.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones call on Will Evans if he has a good start to the season. I don't think Clifford, Harrison or Kvesic - to pick the three guys next in line for the 7 shirt right now - are all that well in place, and he's already said some U20 players are going straight into the EPS.

Personally I'm for moving Itoje (I suspect "where does Itoje play" could become the new "Ford Vs Farrell" in the next year or so....). He adds athleticism to the back row while allowing us to get Launch on the pitch.

Not sure where EJ stands. He has certainly favoured starting Kruitoje so far

And Lawes ahead of Launch when subbing off one of Krutoje.

The sporting gods can be complete b*stards. Feel desperately sorry for Haskell. Toe injuries can take a lot of recovering from and even if he can get properly fit again there is no guarantee he can capture recent form, and he's not getting any younger....he'll miss the AIs and it may well be into the 6N before he is realistically back in the frame.

All of which makes me think that EJ may look more at a possible long term option not a short term stop gap. Need to jump through a few hoops but for me that means fast tracking Underhill. Aussies are generally much more trusting of youth and I reckon EJ might get tempted. Getting way ahead of myself but we could have a 24 y.o open side with 50 caps....that's what other countries do! A bit of a gamble, but less so with Billy and Robshaw both knowing their way around the international game now.

Itoje to 6 and Robshaw to 7 wouldn't upset me either.

My sympathies to Haskell who, one has to feel, has seen the end of his international career. If correct, at least he goes out at the very top.

It's not the first time he has been written off, I wouldn't say he is done quite just yet.

Haskell's only done if the rest of the back row perform the games of their lives all through the AIs. Won't happen.

Times reporting that Hughes will be the beneficiary of the Hask Toe injury. This is the Olivia Newton-John selection process: EJ wants to sustain the physicality of the Haskell/Robshaw axis of evil, and Hughes is the shirt-filler. I would not be at all surprised to see a classic 7 (Underhill, even - sigh - Kvesic) come into the side to balance that out and put Robshaw onto the bench to cover both flanks, with NH dropping into 8 if injury/being a bit knackered strikes BV. I really like BV/NH as dual carriers - and any defence will have its work cut out with the options that creates. Question: NH work rate in defence?

Hughes on the bench would be more likely for me, and I'd guess he'll be the one being knackered more than BV.

If Eddie can sort out Underhill then it could be a straight swap.

Interesting that Eddie is saying that he is aiming to fast track 2 U20's

My money on
Mallinder (Obvious one)
Evans (In more of a Genge type role won't play but will learn)

I'd be surprised if Evans is one considering that we already have a great looking U20s 7 who EJ is trying to get back into England. It would seem odd to me to fast track Evans, just to drop him if Underhill does come over.

That said, I have no clue who else it could be. Marchant? Boyce?

That depends if Underhill is in but apprently Eddie has asked for Evans training footage.

Marchant possibly although JJ, Daly and Manu (who is training again) would be ahead.

Depends on how jones treats the players he subbed early
Maybe Mallinder for Burrell
And Evans for Harrison.

I don't see it being a front rower with the amount of young props we have already in the squad.

Guess it will depend on what happen pre AI and who are regulars at they club.

Interesting that Eddie is picking a 45 man squad
Maybe see a squad of
1) Marler, Vunipola, Mullan, Genge
2) Hartley, George, Taylor, Cown-Dickie
3) Cole, Hill, Sinckler,
4) Itoje, Lawes
5) Kruis, Launchbury, Attwood
6) Robshaw, Hughes, Ewers/Harrison
7) Haskell, Underhill, Evans/Harrison (Guess would be Down to who Eddie wants to have extra at training)
8) Vunipola, Clifford, Beaumont
(25)
9) Youngs, Care, Robson
10) Farrell, Ford, Cips
11) Nowell, May
12) Manu, Slade, Mallinder
13) JJ, Daly, T'eo
14) Watson, Yarde, Roko
15) Brown, Goode, Haley
(20)

I can see Jack Walker getting early call up. Hooker isn't a weak position, but its not overwhelmingly strong either, and he's very much touted. Will Stuart likewise.

But yeah. Mallinder and Evans seem to be the obvious candidates. And, tbh, Evans doesn't have to mean no Underhill if available. That would be a ballsy move, but Jones doesn't look shy there.

I think all have a shot at it.

Eddie has shown in Aus that he tends to have a main squad with about 4/5 players mainly for experience.

I could see a back row of
6) Robshaw
7) Underhill
8) Vunipola

20) Hughes/Clifford

Training squad player Evans.
