England 6N 2016 - General Chit Chat

Only change I see as likely is Mullan for Marler, because he's probably gonna cop a ban for something after that game.

No way Young's starts at scrum half. His passing is atrocious. That's the bedrock of his position and he is failing at it

Agree with Peat don't think we'll see any changed apart from Marler

How's Mullan doing? Switching my broadband away from BT means I've been largely limited to the highlights of the Prem since December :/

Mullan has been meh IMO.

Certainly not in the form he was earlier and last season IMO.

Well at least France were the team with all the knock ons today. Struggling to think of any other looseheads we could bring in. Auterac?

Alex Waller would have been the name that sprang to my mind, but we'll probably do ok with Mullan.

Yeh I really like Waller but like you say Mullan is a good player who could step in on the bench . We are fortunate we have a couple of good options in Mako and Marler so the starting lineup isn't affected too much

What a pity injuries and the law changes at scrum time have more or less finished Alex Corbisiero.
Not that long ago he was one of, if not the the best loosie's in the world.

Any whispers on his future after his years sabbatical?

Got a mentoring role with England age groups hasn't he? presumably his front door into coaching

Watching the U20s on Friday night he seems to be involved with them now.

It would be astonishing if he was ever able to return to international level rugby from where he is now and has been for the last several years. I assume he is moving towards a coaching career whilst still holding out the hope of a playing return, but you'd have to think it unlikely any playing return will be at the elite level.

That said, Steve Thompson made a pretty remarkable comeback from retirement through injury back to the England team. Iirc he even had to repay the insurance company who had paid out after he was initially forced to retire. Or am I imagining that?!

Corbisiero has joined the RFU as a specialist coach working with age groups and acting as a one to one mentor in the same way Richard Hill has been doing (as too has Shaun Perry). Still might plan to come back - I think the constant cycle of rehab wore away at his will to continue more than anything, it's not like he retired on medical advice.

And yes, Thompson had to repay the insurance company.

Anyway, Marler's been cited for his punch, so I imagine Mullan gets his shot now.

I'd hope to see three changes.

1. Cole out for Brookes

2. (and less likely) Ford out for Tuilagi

3. Haskell out for Clifford

It's a tilt at a GS. It's a here and now one off must win not a development opportunity. Jones will reward what's served him well so far.

Assuming Marler's on the naughty step, I think it's a case of whoever replaces him starts. That's Mullan in my book.

There is an argument for Brookes to start. I don't think that will happen, but I do think he'll be quite an early sub. Likewise Youngs and Care.

Haskell stays. He's done a lot of unglamorous heavy hitting that's allowed others to play. The sexy call would be for Launch to come in and Itoje to go to 6, but I think we'll have to wait for Autumn to see that.

I somehow doubt it will be another 55 point job! Then again, France are arguably worse and we're on the up......

Dan Cole has given away 12 penalties:
3 against Scotland
1 against Ireland
2 against Italy
6 against Wales

Since Brookes is now back, surely that swap has to be considered?

Definitely, Cole hasn't been that good even when you ignore his penalty count.
