Half way through the first ODI between SA and Australia.

Australia got 300/8 in their 50 overs. I hope the Proteas can chase it down.

Bailey was dropped 5 times in his innings!!

to his family, be strong in this moment of great distress, a thought for the the guy who was bowling, he must feel (words maybe cannot explain what or how he is feeling.)
RIP Phil Hughes

Indeed, hope Sean Abbot gets support and help through this. This was a tragic, freak accident. Luckily I have seen only positive, supporting words for him aswell as moving tributes for Phil Hughes himself

Nevermind the the great loss for world cricket, my thoughts are with his loved ones and like has been said, Abbot who must be wrestling with the 'what if' questions despite this being a freak accident.

RIP.

Tragic. Doubly shocking because of the assumed sedate, non contact nature of cricket. He will be missed.

Yeah, how terrible it must feel for Abbott. He might even retire because of this.

Horrible, horrible accident and feel for all involved!

Would add that personally I reckon I would prefer to be Hughes' position rather than either Schumacher or Bianci for my families' sake. I am not one to believe that where there is life there is hope in these horrific circumstances.

Also, I do hope this dreadful accident does not bring the health and safety fanatics out in full cry with their usual OTT reactions.

RIP

Must have been horrible for all the players on the field, especially witnessing the delayed reaction, Hughes appears to be just moderately hurt and than collapses(that unbroken fall couldn't have helped) to his eventual death.

Incredibly freak situation, there have been a couple of close calls in baseball over the years but Cricket is even more surprising.

Can't remember many deaths like this in sport, occasionally a soccer player with a heart condition has died on the field, Bill Masterson died in the NHL years ago from a fall though that was pre helmet days.

I doubt it.

The ball hit him on the neck, causing blood to flow to his brain. It's not like the Ball hit him on his temple. And according to the doctors this type of haemorrhage is extremely rare.

There can't be blame on the helmet, even if it was an older type helmet as has been reported, as the grill is still there for protection.

You do not know the lengths that the H&S UK lobby will go to to make the world 100% risk free!! A little thing like a freak accident would not stop them when flower baskets are banned in case they drop on a passer by!! Not really for this thread though......

RIP Phillip Hughes. absolutely terrible news. I'm left speechless and in disbelief
