[COVID-19] General Discussion

Just saw a clip online, though it was Russia Today, in which both Trump and Pompeo make suggested that the virus was man-made and link it to a scientific factory in Wuhan.

They used to say "'tis better to be silent, and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove any doubt"
We need to adapt this to modern times
'tis better to be not-seen, and thought a fool, than to appear in a meme and remove any doubt

Damning article in the Sunday Times. Among the claims:

Johnson did not attend any of the 5 virus Cobra meetings in January or February. If true that is unbelievable.

By late January government advisers were warning that the virus had to potential to infect as many people as Spanish Flu, yet we continued to send PPE to China - 266,000 items including 37,500 gowns by end Feb.

A Downing St adviser saying "And what you learn about Boris was that he didn't chair any meetings. He liked his country breaks. He didn't work weekends. It was like working for an old-fashioned chief executive in a local authority 20 years ago. There was a real sense he didn't do urgent crisis-planning".

If this is true then I suppose it shouldn't come as a great surprise given that his stint as Foreign Secretary also attracted similar criticism with people saying he wasn't really up to it. The Tories picked him as leader not because he would make the best PM but because they thought he was their best campaigner and best hope of winning a General Election. Will be interesting to see if he can last a full five year term.

Yep read the article and it's the equivalent of the NY times article on how Trump's administation was incompetent during February.

And unfortunately if this country and the USA are anything to go by, their supporters will just blindly deny they have done anything wrong. Incompetence to the point where people die really doesn't mean anything. There will be some excuses made and then reel out the old line of "well Labour would have been worse".

If that is true, I wouldn't just have him fired - I'd have him in front of a firing squad.

Taking high public office is a serious responsibility. An abdication of responsibility at that level is essentially treasonous.

If true, thousands of people have likely unnecessarily died - and not through incompetence but through outright neglect. That could be tens of thousands when this is all over.

If we want the responsibilities of the office to be taken seriously - then punishment for abject failure to do so must be draconian. [I know death penalty is a bit much, but rest of natural life in jail is not.]

If nothing substantial is done - then down the line you'll have the same self-entitled eton w**kers not giving two flying f**ks about the general population and it'll repeat in some way or form.

Are cobra meetings minuted? When this settles, its very much in the public interest for the minutes of those meetings to be published verbatim.

Gavin Williamson attempting to lead today's Government briefing which will no doubt end up being a comedy show. One of the most useless muppets we have in Government.

You ain't wrong. How he is education secretary is madness

RIP Auntie Joy

87 years old, and died of a chest infection that didn't respond to antibiotics.

But no mention of COVID, because whilst it is present in the nursing home, no-one on her floor has symptoms (apart from her, of course, who merely had all the obvious ones + anosmia and a few comorbidies)

Some potentially good* news from America:

*it does have its downside though

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...rcraft-carrier-are-symptom-free-idUSKCN21Y2GB

The Navy's testing of the entire 4,800-member crew of the aircraft carrier - which is about 94% complete - was an extraordinary move in a headline-grabbing case that has already led to the firing of the carrier's captain and the resignation of the Navy's top civilian official.

Roughly 60 percent of the over 600 sailors who tested positive so far have not shown symptoms of COVID-19, the potentially lethal respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, the Navy says. The service did not speculate about how many might later develop symptoms or remain asymptomatic.

Assuming that all who would develop symptoms have by now developed it - then not only do we not have mild cases outside hospital and thus outside the count, but also asymptomatic which may be the bulk of folks.

Of course, it means that stopping the spread is harder as it means stupid people with no symptoms have to think of others when going about their daily business.
