[COVID-19] General Discussion

Yeah, Vitamin D is a big one for COVID (well, boosting your immune system - it's no miracle cure) - has been since the start. Most people don't realise how little they get, so always good to give it a nudge in the right direction

He does but that doesn't mean he is wrong or that vit D and zinc doesn't help your immune system when it's been proven for years that it does
The vitamin D because of lack of sunlight during the winter months.

I will agree to disagree on Ivermectin.

Within the UK - more or less everyone will be Vit.D deficient for at least 4 months of the year; a significant majority for all 12 months.

The other thing to mention on Vit.D is that to bump it up, you need way more than the NHS will prescribe; especially when you first start supplementing.

As far as I can tell, Ivermectin may have a place in treating symptoms of the excessive (and untargetted) immune response to Covid infection - so a possibility as a secondary or tertiary treatment option, and completely useless in terms of prevention

Oh yeah it's never been a replacement for vacation but as you said as a cheap treatment for the symptoms it has a place.

I'd recommend to drink orange (+grapefruit) fresh juice every day, instead. This is a "fresh vitamin". I have a juicer at home, but also bought a juicer-cup,put it at work, and was doing fresh juices at work as well ( before Covid): didn't have any virus/flue that time!

You know things might be about to get bumpy globally when even South Korea is starting to lose control for the very first time.

They've a huge vaccination percentage, have shown themselves to be one of the few genuinely competent pandemic management processes and are socially very supportive of pandemic management. Current daily fatalities are only around 75, but this is 3x more than at any other point in the pandemic and it is rising fast.

I'm not wanting to be a merchant of gloom, but I think people have been drawing overly optimistic conclusions about Omicron from having looked at a relatively youthful South Africa in the height of summer (which is massively different conditions to where most readers will be posting from). That is not to say the optimism is baseless, simply that I think we are at least a fortnight away from knowing how bad (or not) this new variant may be.

We are all adults here, but even though being vaccinated makes your 3-4 times less likely to pass it on, I'd advise northern hemisphere types to be hyper cautious around elderly loved ones this winter if you intend spending time indoors with them.

Another place where I post about sports actually started to delete posts debunking vaccine conspiracies and keeping those that peddle such things. Got to love the 21st century!

thats not going to get you Vit.D though...Vit.C yes, which is also good for you but not Vit.D

This may have already been discussed, i had heard recently that the booster shots were only a half dose and that some were suggesting requesting a full dose

Apparently the moderna is a "half dose" where as the pfizer is a full dose for booster

what took some research was apparently a normal dose of pfizer has 30mg of the "active ingredient" where as moderna has 100mg...so a half dose is still more of the 11 secret herbs and spices than a full pfizer

bumped out booster up to this saturday after they changed the rules from 6 months to 5, will be 2 x pfizer and 1x moderna

Yes, my comment was more about how to help your immune system,in general, maybe I wrongly quoted @The_Blindside (but just like to give him advices :p )
Not sure about zinc though, I wouldn't joke with that one: you should know exact "doses" of zinc that you can take (depends on your age etc), it can even damage your health if you take too much zinc..as far as I heard

I've been taking ZMA (zinc and magnesium) abs vitamin D for years as part of my supplementation. Not sure any helped me not catch covid or have any less symptoms with it though.

Just echoing again that vaccination here being part of the solution. But we need it to be part of a long term strategy which includes vaccinating continents like Africa.

My company's Xmas party has finally been cancelled after drop outs and peeps already testing positive. Wondered why it took so long after Sunday's booster announcement and at least 30% of firm under 30 and no time to get their booster. Just left it to individuals to make the decision before justifying the decision to cancel. Peeps scared of catching it, not wanting to ruin their own Xmas, spreading to own families and having to self isolate.

Like that for other peep's firms?

I suspect its who take the brunt financially Sunak has been completely missing in action the past few weeks and people are starting to complain there's no support. But as all these things can still happen legally there is no support therefore its likely your firm has to pay out even though its completely insane to do it.

One of the kids has tested positive. She's pregnant so it was all a bit stressy at first but she quickly calmed down and symptoms are just like a bit of a cold (or maybe she's asymptomatic and has just got a bit of a cold….). Rest of her family are clear, so we're hoping all will be good for Christmas.

Also, really disappointed in a couple of members of the extended family. They're big into complimentary medicine. You can guess the rest……

Yeh my firm was basically playing chicken. Get enough peeps to make the decision to cancel themselves to justify cancelling having already paid for it, but not wanting to cancel it and lose paying for it by making the up front decision to cancel it. If that makes sense. After yesterday though there was no way they could justify peeps going tomorrow. How could peeps enjoy it?
The food is going to charity.

Tom Kerridge makes a good point. Rishi has been conspicuously absent recently:
