[COVID-19] General Discussion

Javid reporting to the House that Omicron daily infections running at around 200,000.

Well I've had covid for the last 8 days (I'm allowed out again on Wednesday).

I still ache all over but haven't lost my taste like the mrs did.

Guess I can't now get a booster until the new year although not sure if I need one now as I've had covid?
hope you recover quickly

I kow in Aus they are looking at change the definition of "fully vaxxed" to be two shots and a booster

Had my booster jab on Sunday, this was Moderna rather than Pfizer (first 2 jabs). Usual sore arm but also had a horrific headache and fever. Felt absolutely awful for a large chunk of today.

I also had Moderna as my booster and apart from muscle ache in arm around injection site for a few days and fatigue next day, which wiped me out I was ok.

Really does seem to be a flip of a coin,
Guy at my work had triple Pfizer and feels like death the day after, someone else had the same feels fine
Parents both had AZ then Moderna, Mom was hit hard and my Dad was fine

I'm triple Pfizer, and fine.
Ali is 2x AZ, and 1x Pfizer, and fine.

But yeah, each of the other doses has been wildly inconsistent between people, I wouldn't take anyone anecdote as actual data

Just want to go back to this point about Omicron leading to milder disease (based anecdotally on SA) but being much more transmissible. So if we do get a million infections of Omicron in the UK by the end of the month a greater proportion can turn out to be serious and end up flooding hospitals, which are already under pressure. A point kind of missed entirely by those Tory rebelling MPs last night.

From what I can tell, we simply don't have enough information to go to talk about Omicron being less severe.
Most cases are in vaccinated people (because most people are vaccinated), and we know that when vaccinated people get infected, it's less severe.
Equally, we don't really know that Omicron is more infectious - we "just" know that it's good at evading vaccination, especially AZ, or those having their 2nd dose a few months ago - which isn't the same thing as "more infectious". Though I accept that the difference is deep in the nuance realm.

We don't have enough data to draw any conclusions yet.

Was listening to a podcast yesterday, that was recorded early last year, and their minds were blown that the worldwide total had just hit 900k

Simpler times

I think it kind of reflects how numb peeps get, not just Americans, to massive numbers of deaths. The whole "it is what it is" mentality which Trump espoused, but as long as "I" can go about my life as normal.

I recently had what I suspect was the Omicron variant. Have recovered fully but it was touch and go at one point.
Upper throat started closing up the airway (note breathing problem did not come from lungs but the throat airway physically blocking)

The doctor told me she is surprised every day with new symptoms it does not surprise them anymore but throat swelling is not supposed to be a symptom. Had to take a strong cocktail of steroids. And drip. Doctor said she was worried about me at the time as on day 2 I was man down and had to get drip and Roids (Cortizone) and usually it gets worse between day 5 and 7. You don't want to take the Roids on day 2 as it fucks up your immune system and you kinda need the immune system to work at this point. But breathing at that point was more important than an immune response, the virus also attacked red blood cells and I became a major risk for clotting. Had to get onto very expensive blood-thinning pills as the covid took it to extremely high levels.

But all was good. I was kinda stressed for the rest of my family, they have all been vaccinated fully but I am the fittest in the family, doing regular Hikes and competition runs and it hit me like a truck. Anyway, it hits different people in various ways, my friend slept next to his wife in the same room (after his positive test) without isolating from her after she has had the Delta and Omicron strains and he naturally fought reinfection every time, the first time he was totally unvaccinated and now with the Omicron he had one shot.

My coworker has lost her taste and smells indefinitely That stuff needs counselling. I lost mine and could pick up dog **** or sniff Vicks menthol rub without smelling a thing. Luckily it came back after four weeks, I smell trained every day trying to smell strong stuff. Eventually, I got hints of smell and oh boy was it a joyous experience.
