Clerc, The Best Wing Around?

Clerc is also physical. You obviously haven't seen a lot of him I think. Second try vs Ireland in RWC he just pushes off TWO players to score after catching the ball. He's also got a superb hand-off ( check his try against leicester in HCup.). and he keeps the momentum going after the contact . Best finisher and winger in NH (and from a NH country) right now.

Relatively speaking he is a strong lad. The point is that he is a a small winger, not a big freight train. While is very athletic, strong (good hand-off like you said), he isn't as big as Lote Tuqiri or Jonah Lomu. Basic physics tells you those two will always have a bigger impact due to their speed and weight/strength. Same thing with Vainikolo, the man shrugs off several tacklers to score tries. He actually manages to break tackles that are already made. From what I've seen, Clerc doesn't really push people off, he fends them while using his speed and agility to go around them. He is only limited in the fact that he isn't larger/heavier, but then again that would probably cost him some mobility, so it's rather even there.

I have to agree btw, he is definatly the best winger around this 6N (and thus of the NH). I'd like to see him more with the ball in hand though, his last 3 tries have come from speed, vision and good execution thusfar, I'd like to see him more with the ball in hand, making breaks to score tries.

@Ripper: I'd have Clerc anyday instead of this useless Tuqiri. I see you support Auckland. Would you say Smith is a bad winger cos he can't fend off an SA Lock ? What about Benson Stanley ? Is he too small as well ?

I don't think anyone actually rates Tuqiri, even Tahs supporters...

In the commercial the race might have required a video finish, but I would definatly put my money on Clerc for this foot race.

i think clerc could be said one of the best wings around europe but around the world he would be in the top 10/15 because he has good attacking aspects but he has to improve his deffensive ones.

in the top 10/15??? so there are 14 wingers outside europe who are better than Clerc??? yeah right.

I mean even if I'm not the biggest fan of Clerc I must say this is total nonsense. Hey that's a good poll : name a national team in which Clerc would not be called even if he had the right nationality.

I'm really not a fan of French Rugby (probably because I'm English), but I have to say, on current form Clerc is the best winger in the world. That being said I think it is impossible to say who is the best winger in the world full-stop. Different players will come into form at different times and be the best at that stage.

Also, I have been lucky enough to be in the stadium watching Clerc live a few times and he does have that special, unplacable, something about him, that is electrifying every time he gets his hands on the ball.

What are you on about Charlie Boy?

Who said anything about Costa Lote? And David Smith could probably bowl over some South African lock's given the chance, dude is a pocket pinball who when not making people look silly take's the direct root on players he has no right doing so. Benson Stanley is one out of left field - him being a centre first and foremost.

Video clip? Not that I don't believe you, it's just I'd like to see that.

I'll dig it up when I next go on one of my Youtube binges, it's on one of those various 5 minute comp videos, saw it a month or two back. Here's a text description from the game log.

The blistering pace created more and more space, and that could mean only one thing: more Rokocoko magic. The No 11 showing incredible strength to bust three tackles and carry two more defenders over the line with him from 12m out. Try

South Africa got Rokcokowned

Vincent Clerc is an unreal wing but the folowing wingrs arer as good or better.

Rokoko Doug Howlet Sivivatu Shane Horgan (obviously not on current form) the fijian Delisail (any one watched fijis matches in the world cup or wasp v clermont) Tom varndel paul sacky and vainikolo. Im sure iv propably missed out on one or two more aswell. Now here comes the part wher every one says im a stupid fool

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but you obviously don't watch Clerc much if you think all those players are better than him. Habana and Rokocoko, yes. Delasau is probably on par with him. But the rest are no-brainers, nowhere near his class.

'Unreal' is a bit over the top there dude.

That would put the players you listed below in the supernatural category lol

Eh no there as good or slihtly beter

<div class='quotemain'> <div class='quotemain'>

Not much I can say about that.
I still maintain he is one of the best wingers in Europe and up there with the best in the world.
If we're all going on stats then Shane Williams on 37 tries in 52 matches (i think) that puts him on pretty good stats considering the team he plays for has - for a majority of the time - been losing or being on the backfoot a lot in those games.

I was just criticising you for flat out saying "no" without backing it up with an arguement.
I was hoping by playing the 'SH Favouritism' Card it would in some way encourage you to argue your case...not bring up Shane Williams.

It's a flat out no because the topic creator was firing his load over performances against Scotland and Ireland? There's not a case to argue, I could dig up performances where Caleb Ralph had scored hat-tricks against 6 Nations teams (Think it was either your rabble or the Italians), does that mean he can be in the same conversation as the big guns at the moment.

I wouldn't fear him, just like I never feared Shane Williams, neither would any other All Black or South African fan. Until I see them do damage against the incumbent best wings in the world, there's no claim to make.
:bravo:

Just don't compare Clerc to Shane Williams, he's way stronger. And watch that :

It's one of Clerc's last games against a southern nation, as he didn't play the last tour against the ABs. That last handoff is enough proof for me. So the South African fans who shouldn't fear Clerc are approximately one year old.

Yes but you obviously dont know that this is the springbok team that went on to lose 49-0 to Australia. They were playing truly sh** rugby for the first half of the season and only marginally better after that. That last fend was hardly impressive either. Vincent Clerc is truly gifted but not in the same class as other great wingers
