Clerc, The Best Wing Around?

Best winger (and player even) in Europe. I'll wait for the Six Nations to finish before I decide whether he's the best wing in the World, but he's in the top three, no doubt about that.

World rugby doesn't finish when the 6N's finish....

Thank you, Captain Obvious. I was just saying that if he plays at this standard for another 3 or 4 games, he'll be the best in the World.
...but is quite likely to be overtaken again when the other major rugby tournament (Tri-Nations...not very well known this one, evidently) is either underway or finished. You would be "Captain Wise" to weigh up how good he is after both tournaments are played out (Clerc may well still be the best winger after this time, however its always good to see how the rest of the guys go). I think that is what BLR aka Captain Obvious was getting at my friend.

Fair enough, I won't/can't argue with that. I still think Clerc can be the best winger in the World. He was solid against Rockococo (sp?) in the France-NZ game, but I won't dwell too much into that now. His form has certainly increased this season, but, like you said, we should wait until the SH boys have a go in July.

<strike>Rockococo</strike>, rather Rokocoko. :)

I just had to :p

Wingers don't score tries if their partners play like shite. If you watch the Ireland game, his three tries come from massive efforts by Skrela and Heymans, and a clever kick by Elissalde. I think most international wingers would have scored them, as the only task he had was to run. And that he knows.
Comparing statistics is a big tricky, as the good performance of a winger is mainly the reflection of the good performance of his teammates. Take Ngwenya for example, I'm not sure any of you even mentioned him, but to me, he would easily be in the first XV of any top nation, if only he wasn't American.

Thats Captain Rock-em, Sock-em, Jet-pack to you!

<div class='quotemain'> No, just No.

Of course not, to contemplate anything other than a SH winger being great is just unheard of...

I think the last time we had an arguement about a NH winger was the great Shane Williams debate... right before he got *****slapped for a second year in a row by Rico Gear who was at best our 3rd best winger.

Not much I can say about that.
I still maintain he is one of the best wingers in Europe and up there with the best in the world.
If we're all going on stats then Shane Williams on 37 tries in 52 matches (i think) that puts him on pretty good stats considering the team he plays for has - for a majority of the time - been losing or being on the backfoot a lot in those games.

I was just criticising you for flat out saying "no" without backing it up with an arguement.
I was hoping by playing the 'SH Favouritism' Card it would in some way encourage you to argue your case...not bring up Shane Williams.

I was delighted when i heard he was going to be on the bench, that says it all, he is a class act. That Tackle (if you could call it that, Just picked him up and dropped him) on Reddan though was nasty and I hope he cuts it out of his game.

It's a flat out no because the topic creator was firing his load over performances against Scotland and Ireland? There's not a case to argue, I could dig up performances where Caleb Ralph had scored hat-tricks against 6 Nations teams (Think it was either your rabble or the Italians), does that mean he can be in the same conversation as the big guns at the moment.

I wouldn't fear him, just like I never feared Shane Williams, neither would any other All Black or South African fan. Until I see them do damage against the incumbent best wings in the world, there's no claim to make.

Used to be the big Welsh hero, but after getting molested by winger's from the south who were taller than him several times he faded into obscurity and is now a movie extra. Last seen on the set for "Alvin and the Chipmunks."

I think it was W_Cullen said earlier in this thread that Clerc didnt have the pace or strength of Habana and Rokocoko, im not so sure, i think he has pretty similar pace to atleast Joe and his strength is impressive. The second try he scored against Ireland in the world cup is a testament to that. Obviously this thread was eventually going to be subjected to stats but over the last few years France have looked no where near as effective in attack as the Boks and the All Blacks making the stats become pretty much irrelivent.

However as ive said before i dont think Clercs the best, but he is in the top 4 or 5 and has the potential to challenge Habana as "King of the wing".

Can't believe I dropped him from my fantasy team only for him to come back into the side and grab a hatrick :(

:bravo:

Just don't compare Clerc to Shane Williams, he's way stronger. And watch that :

It's one of Clerc's last games against a southern nation, as he didn't play the last tour against the ABs. That last handoff is enough proof for me. So the South African fans who shouldn't fear Clerc are approximately one year old.

 Terrible defense by the Springboks

Only Shane William is comparable to him at the moment, in Europe I mean.

Saying he's as good as Shane William's is supposed to convince us from the South how?
