Champions Cup - Pool 4, Round 4 (Bath, Glasgow, Montpellier, Toulouse)

Shame there wasn't a scrum between the Bath front row change and the Montpellier - I imagine Bath will have the upper hand now, but I'd be interested to see how they fair against the guys who tore up James/Wilson.

Burgess's tackling isn't too hot is it? Also interesting to see James struggling so much and Auterac come on quite early.

Bath solid but unimaginative, Montpellier terrible.

Bath have no maul without Attwood

"What you want is George Ford with Matt Banahan inside him"

Do you, Flats?
Do you?

They look too complacent to me. They should have overhauled Montpellier when they were down to 10.

Edit: from this, burgess looks to be a back rower in the making.

What? How was that not a penalty?
In a lot of game's that would've been a yellow!

It's like that old andrew hore clip where he asks if they can tackle dan carter.

Referee: "Are we allowed to penalise Sam Burgess?"

He's like a headless chicken.... He's just got to be patient, he's trying too hard and he's completing the tackle when he doesn't need to... I.e. Flopping when he could step back and set for the next phase.

Bath, and Burgess need to understand wanting to be involved is very different to actually being involved.

Sam Burgess drinking game would be deadly.
Someone needs to make this.

Aye - I still think it's too early for him to be playing/starting first team rugby.
Be interesting to see what happens when the Prem starts back up.

yep, he should be playing Monday evening and at 6 or 8, he's just completely not involved in anyway of worth at the moment, and Bath suffered tonight for it i felt.

I honestly see nothing in how he moves, handles tracks, tackles etc... that makes me think he should be playing 12. He HAS to move to backrow.

I think Bath really missed Eastmond, their attack lacked direction and creativity for large chunks of that game. Burgess is a smashing 12 but not a creative one. In a way the threat of him running at players was more effective than him actually running at them.

Honestly, I think talk of him playing in the WC is reaaaaaally far-fetched at this point.
He has like a couple of months left until the Six Nations. If he doesn't appear there, I don't think he'll be picked for the WC.
6 is too nuanced a position for him to actually learn it in that time, too many union-specific skills that he would have to learn, and there are too many great options around. Whereas I don't think his skill set suits the centre positions and he's got Eastmond, Joseph and Devoto who will keep him out most of the tougher games in the centres.
Could be a fantastic 6, in a couple of years. In time for the WC? Just not seeing it.

The awkward thing for Bath is that, if he doesn't make the RWC squad (which I think is a fair assumption) is that he has a get out clause at the end of each Union season, and the Rabbitohs made them include a clause that says if he leaves then they get first offer on him (for no "transfer fee").
If he loses out in the RWC, and isn't 100% enjoying his rugby in the rain and mud of Bath, then I imagine a plane ticket back to Sydney, to his brothers, will be mighty tempting.

Obviously this is a worst case scenario, and will most likely not happen.

yeah, i think there is a bit more about Burgess than heading home with his kit bag and i've not doubt he could be a superb convert, but i reaallllly think ford and co are messing this up big time by playing him so early, it's all feeling like a bad joke right about now.

The guy needed a proper rest after the NRL season, he should just be jogging out for the B side this weke, then looking to make an impact January. Too much too soon for the guy.
