Boxing Thread

Boxing is really heating up at the moment. You have Frampton vs Quigg soon, Canelo vs Khan, Joshua vs Martin for IBF ***le, Fury vs Klitschko v2 (although rumor is it may not happen), and a bunch of other interesting fights in the heavyweight division. Martin vs Joshua is the really interesting one for me.
I find boxing hard to follow these days. Frampton and Golovkin are the only two I find interesting, considering Frampton grew up 5 minutes from where my mother did would suggest GGG is the only one I'm genuinely fascinated with! Joshua has such potential to become Amir Kahn v.2, one loss and no one cares about him anymore and Martin, for what little I know, seems a big step up fron anyone Joshua has fought.

Joshua should not have taken the fight far too early for him. Even if he wins he will have to fight much better challengers than he is ready for. Needs a new promoter.

Joshua should thrash Martin, BUT I agree with second point.

I don't think he will 'thrash Martin'. It is a pretty interesting and close fight for me. Joshua has never fought a notable southpaw, and Martin will be either the first or second biggest hitter Joshua has been in with. Add that Joshua doesn't really have much of a height advantage. Martin's level of opposition has been pretty questionable; his win over Glazkov will probably always have brackets beside with with (who broke is leg). But he has shown that he can go late in fights and he has a very good punch variety.

It is a very good competitive fight.

Like everyone else I think fighting for a World ***le in a 16th pro fight is too soon. But I'm not as against it as others. The guys who he was looking at fighting next as step up fights were Takam, Stiverne and Jennnings with some talk about Parker too. In my mind all of those guys (barring Parker) have proven themselves as experienced and quality operators - so I;m just not sure there is any more risk fighting Martin than those guys.

Then should Joshua win he would probably be able to squeeze a voluntary defense in before the mandatory - I would guess against a low risk/high pay fight like against Chisora - and then his mandatory would likely come against one of Takam/Parker/Teper (if he clears his second drug test). All three guys are on the radar now. So his next three fights are all at a similar level they would have be if he hadn't taken the Charles Martin fight this year - except he will have a World ***le during that time to boost his PPV buys even further.

That is my thinking anyway.

Prince Charles Martin is a good fighter, and the risk is real for both of these fighters so I think both of them deserve praise for this fight happening.

Martin has attributes that gives him a stylistic advantage against AJ, but I do have AJ as a favourite. In my mind Martin is still just as much of a prospect as AJ is despite already having a world ***le.
Martin is a southpaw and has a great left cross and I think AJ has problems seeing punches coming from a left hand. Whyte's left hook was basically his only weapon against AJ before he got injured and he stunned AJ with it.

Even though Martin is fairly inexperienced he seems to have a high fight IQ and doesn't waste punches, he is a very patient fighter with decent defense and good stamina.

I have never seen Martin hit by a big puncher like AJ but tbh if AJ lands on any fighter with consistency I don't think they can survive very long. I think AJ is a better athlete, he has more speed of hand and foot (Martin isn't a sloth himself) and clearly more power.

According to Hearn the guys that he was considering lining AJ up against were IBF ranked any way so if he wins he can still follow the same path he would have likely gone any way.

Oscar Rivas vs Gerald Washington on Feb-27 - Rivas is an interesting prospect. Has quick hands and heavy punches. Looks good on the inside. I think Washington will be too big and experienced - he is also a durable guy who is good at keeping his distance. Washington on points for me.

Ruslan Chagaev Vs Lucas Browne - March 3rd - Germany - Chagaev to win for me. Just the better boxer, has a very good chin and I think he can outwork and outpoint Browne. Chagaev by decision.

Luis Ortiz Vs Tony Thompson - March 5th D.C. - Ortiz is on fire at the moment. I rate Thompson but I think Ortiz will win by KO.

Michael Sprott vs. Christian Hammer, March 18th, Romania - both taken losses to elite level fighters recently, but I think Hammer is currently the better boxer. Hammer by KO.

Tomasz Adamek Vs Eric Molina - April 2nd - Interesting one for me. Molina looked good vs Wilder. It is in Poland, and I think Adamek is technically a much better boxer. I think Adamek will take the decision.

Helenius v Duhaupas on Apr 2nd for WBC Silver Belt - Helenius will win, probably by points. Should be an interesting if - if no somewhat lumbering - fight.

Anthony Joshua Vs Charles Martin for IBF World ***le - April 9th, 02 Arena, England. - Really interesting fight. I think Joshua wins by KO (if not KO he may be in trouble), but I think it's a 60/40 fight for me.

Pulev vs Chisora - 9th April - My money would be on Pulev. He's got an excellent jab and is great at keeping fighters out of range. Chisora is only good on the inside and working the body and he always fails when stepping up against good opposition.

Joseph Parker Vs TBA - April 17th - Don't know who he's fighting, but seeing as most top boxers seem to be booked / and I can't see the guys left like Stiverne/Jennings wanting to come to NZ - I have to assume it's not going to be a big name. I'll go with Parker.

Deontay Wilder vs. TBA in April sometime - His mandatory is Povetkin. I am hoping Povetkin wins just because he tends to take big fights. Wilder has been a joke champion fighting Molina, Duhappas and Spzilka as his voluntary defenses, while constantly talking about how great he is. That said I think it would be a really, really interesting fight. I'll say Povetkin by KO.

David Haye v TBA - May 21 - Seeing as Haye is self promoted - fighting on channels like Dave - I can't see it being a genuine top 10 fighter for this next fight. He looked great in his short fight against De Mori, but who knows who it will be if he isn't offering big money. I'll say whoever it is Haye is likely to win by KO.

The Furious Oneâ"¢ v Vlad II. June 4th for WBA, WBO and IBO World ***le - Really interesting. Unless Klitschko changes ALOT up, I have to go with Tyson Fury by points again. Didn't think I'd be saying that 12 months ago :(

Some of my predictions.

So who is paying to watch the big fight on Saturday night? Come on AJ!!

Fury V Wlad 9th of July. Really looking forward to this as the last one was just so exciting..... Hope Fury's has gotten rid of all those toxins he's been taking these last few months

Could definitely see it happening. Hope it doesn't though... would be much better for the sport if AJ wins.

Clearly AJ is a much bigger draw, he is already one of the more popular fighters out there but IMO he is a fighter that could transcend the sport and attract a lot of people that don't watch boxing.
He has the charisma and the look to make a lot of money, as well as a fan friendly fighting style.

I really do rate Prince Charles and I like him too but I still think AJ will win. I think there will be a bit of cat and mouse and PCM is too good for AJ to just blow away in a couple of rounds. I think AJ will get the ko but probably after 7-9 rounds and I think he will have to go through some adversity again. This will be a fun fight to watch I think, they both love throwing bombs and neither fighter is a spoiler.

Just hope AJ lives up to the hype and doesn't turn out to be like Bruno was; a a great athlete and devastating puncher, but suspect defence. Well, this will be one I will be watching tonight; come on AJ!!!

So here we go: AJ v Martin. Don't know too much about Martin, but hope it's at least competitive, but AJ wins the IBF heavyweight ***le.
