Aviva Premiership Round 13

I hnow. A broken neck is much worse.

You break your neck scrummaging (and more people have) shall we ban that too? How about pulling someone over in the line out? Lifetime ban? 5 years ago Floods tackle would have been seen as a good hard tackle, in RL it would still be seen as that but because we have all become sanctimonious daily mail reading tarts things like rucking have been banned and every tip tackle, collision with a jumping player, late tackle, punch is followed by this outpouring of horror normally by people who dont play the game.

Don't matter. Spear tackle through Wreckless play. should be a ban under IRB law.

Paint it whatever way you like, its indefensible.

So were in agreement then. Clumbsy and wreckless play which could injure a player should always warrant a ban.*

*Unless you're a Leicester-England player, when there's no case to answer. Even if the textbook law about player welfare (10.4j) was contravened.

Agree with that bit....

London Welsh number 8 Adam Balding gave a good lesson to all of how not to finish a try against Harlequins last weekend ...

1. He should have drawn the last defender and passed to the man outside.
2. If he was going to go for it himself he should have run for the corner not straight at the defender.
3. If he was going to run straight at the defender he should have gone low, not run straight at him in high body position so the defender can get under the ball.

London Welsh lost this game by just 5 points as well.

I've been dipping in and out of the game and in the first half I say him get bounced by Biggs at least twice, who at under 13st isn't going to be the type of player Wade would be defending against in the 6N (imagine Cuthbert running over him all day).

Big fan of Wade but I'd rather he perfected his small-man-defending (like you said, Shane wasn't a weakness in defence, so it can be done) in the prem than for England, because it's not quite there yet.

Biggs is adorable, though.

:)

/fangirl moment ;)

Anyhoo...JUST getting around to watching the Wasps/Bath match, and just wondering what others think about the yellow card at the 6:14 mark. Yeah, the player was lifted, but he wasn't dropped or driven downward into the ground. Thoughts?

TMO got it wrong. That was a perfectly good tackle.

Unlike Floods spear...

Agreed. I suppose sometimes it's best to err on the side of caution, but too much of that and pretty soon they'll be playing football (of the soccer variety). Flood's spear could have easily resulted in a broken neck or head injury, whereas this one maybe Agulla ended up with a few grass stains, at worst.

Can I just ask another question - is it my imagination, or have there been a lot of penalty tries awarded in all the competitions this season? I am more attentive to Southern Hemi rugby where penalty tries seem few and far between, but currently they seem to be handing them out left and right in the north. What gives? (And thanks in advance - I always appreciate any enlightenment you guys can offer.)

i have no enlightenment, but i will give you my opinion.

I think that the penalty try is a measure meant to speed up the game, to drop the high fragmentation due to repeated scrums or penalties. It's quite irritating to watch a match with 6-7 collapsed scrums near the posts, or to see the same offside penalty against the defending team in the same area.

The south does not use the penalty try a lot because the speed there is higher, they are playing a more open, constructive game, it depends a lot on the individual contribution, very often a tense situation near the posts is solved by a player from the attack. But i don't agree with you entirely, i saw more penalty tries in super rugby and the ITM cup than in the last years.

Well, you're clearly mental.
