A Political Thread pt. 2

I live about 30mins north of Birmingham and the disruption(/destruction) because of HS2 has been mad - houses and farms forcibly purchased and demolished, woodland cut down
They closed the entrance to Lichfield a year ago (adding several miles to the trip), to build a bridge or tunnel or whatever, meant to be opening next year and then they'll close the exit to do the other half - what's happening with that now?
I dread to think how many extra hours I've spent commuting to Birmingham over the last three years because of roadworks and decreased speed limits etc.

All for nothing, because Birmingham is gonna be the end of the line and this extra little bit was to extend it for the start of the line to Manchester

They destroy everything in their path, waste billions on bad or corrupt contracts, refuse to change course despite clear failures and leave us with the bill. It's the perfect analogy for the tory party.

McCarthy is nuts, but he'll probably be replaced by someone even nuttier. That's today's Republican Party, chock full o' nuts.

Anyone catch Sunak's speech? From what I've heard most people on the show floor were just putting out ideas for who could be the next PM.

Tbh the only thing Tories have in their favour is FPTP and no credible right wing alternative. The country is fed up, it's just whether or not people vote tactically to get them out or split the left wing vote. Sunak can do very little because at this point they have been in power so long people just blame them, regardless of whether it's true or not.

Wasn't aware of this, but apparently everything Sunak announced at the conference was already announced or canned 😂

Truly shocking that the government's rape advisor is moving to the US to feel safe again from rape. That's not critical of the US, but horror that Britain feels that unsafe by comparison.

Seems like Israel was taken off guard. The reports of hostages being taken into Gaza is mental, but Hamas claims they are prisoners of war due to the illegal occupation by Israel.

Israel's military rule disrupts every aspect of daily life in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It continues to affect whether, when and how Palestinians can travel to work or school, go abroad, visit their relatives, earn a living, attend a protest, access their farmland, or even access electricity or a clean water supply. It means daily humiliation, fear and oppression. People's entire lives are effectively held hostage by Israel.

This **** plays out exactly the same way every single time. The militants will have the upper hand with a surprise attack, Israel will strike and almost inevitably will hit non-military targets (either accidently, as a necessity due to militants firing from civilian centres, or just fully intentionally), international condemnation of both side, Israel expands further into occupied territories, militants run out of steam and Israel passes a bunch of legislation allowing even more draconian measures and legitimising all current occupied areas. Rinse and repeat...

The end result is that Israel is simply going to end up absorbing the whole west bank. Gaza is a funny one, I don't think they are interested in absorbing Gaza as it is a convenient enemy to keep.

All under Netanyahu's watch. There is always more beef when he is in power. Sounds like there have been a significant increase in provocations hence Hamas' response. Not saying they are right but Bibi has form.

Israel definitely aren't innocent. Their constant land grabs and letting the settlers get away with murder, often literally, only makes things worse. People tend to throw all their weight behind one side or the other in a situation where both sides are acting like absolute shits. I knew a guy at Uni who was adamant Israel were at fault and every action of Hamas could be justified as self defence and another guy who was exactly the same the other way.

Yeah it's a very complex situation where both sides have played dirty. Can imagine it's extremely hard to find a compromise that will suit both sides and end the conflict once and for all. You can almost draw comparisons with what Russia are doing to Ukraine although clearly not to the same scale.

With a US election not far off Israel are perhaps banking on a Republican win as they tend to get more support from them than the Democrats. Putin will also be hoping for the same given the noises about the Republican stopping providing weapons to Ukraine.

Sadly a vicious circle that will never end in our lifetime and I can't see ending in several. Each generation will have more children and be reinforced to hate the other side.
