A Political Thread pt. 2

I mean if that's true regardless of the picket line stuff its a perfectly understandable reason to sack someone even if you agree with what they are saying. I mean essentially he booked himself to to speak publicly against the guy he works for.

Some people will believe this, others will say he was punished for attending the rallies. Either way it shows that there is still too much infighting within Labour. In a way they are similar to the Tories in that there are quite wide points of view within the party and ideologically they should form their own party. However, no one wants to give up the brand, so they stick with each other even if they disagree. Difference is the Conservatives are in power and have a monopoly on the right, so they can argue amongst themselves without too much damage. Labour can't afford any infighting when it's competing with other left wing parties.

I think either is a sackable offence this excuse just makes the medicine goes down a bit better when the day before the leader says the front bench shouldn't be on the pickets as they need to be negotiators between both parties if in government to then go on the picket line and then go on media trashing your policy. I mean your asking to get sacked.

Agree with everything you've said.

British Gas owner Centrica and Shell have posted huge profits due to rising energy prices, as UK households face even higher energy bills.

Centrica's half-year profits were five times higher than a year earlier, while Shell reported record profits for the April-to-June period.

I am certainly not looking forward to my energy bills in the winter.

My recalculated gas direct debit came through at £113, whereas this time last year I was paying £30. It's mental.

And in no way justified, blatant profiteering and once again the government just sits back and lets the people of this country get absolutely fleeced. It's no wonder real terms wealth has dropped by about 20%-25% since the financial crash, with the exception being for the wealthy who are now richer than ever.

Starmer wanted to tax them, even Sunak planned to increase corporation tax which would have seen the energy giants pay more but Truss would rather cut taxes which just benefits everyone (including rich Tory party members) and companies like this.

We're going down that same horrible rabbit hole of people refusing to accept facts that conflict with their world view. By all accounts the last heatwave smashed all record and it's pretty well established at this stage that climate change is a thing and is contributing to this and yet people want to live in denial. I strongly suspect the abuse also came from a certain side of the political spectrum who are more inclined to deny man made climate change...

It was madness the UK hit the highest it ever has in this country, at least only had one 'friend' saying oh just go out and enjoy it.

Litreally wildfires as houses burned which I've never really heard of in this country.

It is nuts. I think the average Joe on the street just can't comprehend the effect of pumping mass CO2 into the atmosphere and the long term impact on the climate. But it's now happening in front of our eyes.

Our target (and USA?) of getting to net zero is 2050 FFS but the likes of India, China and Russia who contribute most of the global C02 is 2070 IIRC. How is the world going to get it down when parts of the world are pulling in different directions?

Put it simply as a world we are fcuked.

Climate change is one of many things I'm totally ignorant on but I'm more than happy to refer to the experts in this case where my understanding is 99% of climate scientists are broadly in agreement with each other.

Got loads of mates that say it's bollix or it's all natural or some **** though. Annoys me as we seem to be in this age where pig **** thick people like me will profess they know better than the experts coz they watched some bell end on YouTube saying it's all fine.

I agree. The planet will be fine though. Humans, not so much.
Humans will be fine or at least the human race. Whether the conditions will lead to a better quality of life and how many its going to kill is another matter.

Yeah, that's better put. Even if 99% of humans were wiped out you'd still have a fair few of us kicking around.

I wouldn't bet on that.

We could easily be heading to another Permian-Triassic mass extinction event. Depending on what time-lines we're talking about, of course (talking next millenia or so).
Life on earth will be fine, homo sapiens will probably survive, but I wouldn't bet on it being "fine"

Either way, the fewer humans kicking around for the next couple of centuries, the better.
I do forsee massive effects of climate change, arridisation/dessertification and massed movements of people, water shortages etc within the next generation or two, and don't particularly feel like bringing up kids to suffer through it.

More fleecing and more of the government going "Oh won't somebody please think of the wealthy?" and acting like taxing these profits will somehow harm the country more than if nothing is done and the people of this country become so poor is precipitates a decade of economic stagnation...

Wagatha Christie, I really don't go for celebrity gossip at all but its kinda exposed quite how horrific people in the sphere attack each other. Do wonder what the hell Vardy was thinking bringing the libel trial to court, either her lawyers were overpaid and badly advised her or she was stubbornly stupid, especially as Rooney offered to settle 4 times.

what I find funny about global warming is that most people realize that we need to cut down on our energy consumption but they always want to pass the blame onto someone else. Yes, large companies are largely responsible for our energy consumption but people could be better with their consumption patterns. I'm a big believer that change in the world is going to be demand driven because the supply side is overwhelmingly reactionary.

Everything I've read indicates that we are going to have to cut our consumption and that we cannot grow forever. People just don't want to believe it. Meanwhile we keep chasing silver bullet solutions that will allow us to continue increasing our consumption usage without facing consequences.

A lot of environmentalists feel it is not fair to tell developing countries that they are not allowed to tell use the same technologies that we used to get to where we are today, I am not one of those environmentalists.

TBH the whole letting developing countries pollute until they have done the same amount as the west is such a flawed argument for a multitude of reasons. It assume that everyone must follow an identical path of industrialisation yet I don't see them saying developing nations should have levels of pollution and contamination Victorian Britain had. There are other ways to modernise that do not require going through mass coal, oil and gas burning plants and heavy industry. It also ignores that the pollution the developed world did in the past was before we were aware of the global consequences (local pollution was known and ignored but that's another matter). It also ignores that the climate doesn't care where the GHGs come from, they are still going into the atmosphere whether they are from the developed or developing world.

The one thing I do agree with though is saying that developing nations need to reduce their consumptions whilst we don't, particularly the USA. I think it's fair for some parts of the world to consume more as many are living in abject poverty and we should consume much less to balance it out.
