2017 British & Irish Lions Squad Announcement

My test 23

Vunipola, George, Furlong
Kruis Itoje
Stander Faleteau Warburton
Murray Sexton
Farell Joesph
Williams Hogg Seymour

Owens, McGrath, Cole, Henderson, Vunipola, Webb, Henshaw, North

Are you really welsh?

Umm, I don't know what come over me #aslongaswebeatengland
My actual team:

McGrath Owens, Furlong
Henderson Jones
Warburton, Faleteau, Tipruic
Webb Biggar
Henderson Davies
Williams Halfpenny North

Best, Vunipola, Cole, Krius, Moriaty, Murray, Sexton, Hogg

A few too many English in the team but I think it balances out in the end. Thought I would stack the back line with Welsh as they are the most exciting and creative in Europe.

From the squad, I think below is most likely 23 to play the 1st test:

1. McGrath
2. Best - (hope he sorts out his throwing in at the lineout)
3. Furlong
4. Itoje
5. AWJ
6. POM (need the best backrow lineout jumper to compete with Read and Kaino). Also a dog at the breakdown and picking Stander would just duplicate Billy's ball carrying.
7. Warburton
8. Vunipola

9. Murray (although not sure he will make the tour, if not then Webb)
10. Sexton
11. North
12. Farrell
13. Davies (although by the 2nd and 3rd tests, i think Henshaw will get picked at 13.
14. Seymore (solid under the high ball and takes his chances when scoring tries)
15. Hogg

16. George
17. Mako V
18. Cole
19. Kruis
20. SOB/Stander
21. Webb (if Murray doesn't make it, he starts and Youngs to bench)
22. Daly
23. Te'o

What's the story with Murray being a doubt?

A nerve issue. We are working hard to get him out there this weekend. He might wake up be perfect but easily could crash and burn. Our medical team as a whole have advised to consider a summer out. We are meeting Lions medical team in 2 weeks to hand over reports but even if he goes it'll be a thing he must be managed

It will be a big loss if Murray doesn't make it. Who do we think will get called up instead? Care?

Rather Davies but the scots will be moaning if it wasn't Laidlaw.

Care would be my first choice then Davies then Laidlaw. I just find him way too slow sometimes and you don't really need his leadership or goal kicking on the field.

TBH I don't think it makes that much difference there is very little between everyone below Murray, Webb probably edges it to start but then they could have anyone on the bench and it wouldn't make much difference to the result.

I'd probably go for Care as he might MIGHT catch the NZ nappinging with a quick penalty or two and get a cheaky try out of it.

I can see it now. Sexton gets crocked early on paving the way for Biggar. A centre gets injured and is replaced by Jamie Roberts. Hogg gets stitched up in the warm up games while 1/2P gets the red carpet treatment making him first choice 15. Best will be the midweek captain. Jamie George will be viewed as the finisher at hooker leaving Owens to start. So the test 15 will include

North
1/2P
Williams
Biggar
Webb
Farrell/Henshaw (with Roberts coming off the bench)
JD2
Tips
Warbs
AWJ
Owens

Yeah, while I know you're deliberately exaggerating the other point about the relative numbers of English/Irish/Scottish is that as you've pointed out here, most Welsh apart from Moriarty are likely to be top choices. England have the most players of course but I expect some to be firmly mid-week players. Looking at the likes of, Sinkler, George, Marler, all three were clear 3rd choices. I expect a largely Irish and Welsh Test team with a smattering of English and Hogg

I can see something interesting in the team, looks likely to play a big ball carrying dynamic set of forwards for most part, with solid, yet unspectacular backs, mostly focused on distribution to the wingers, and a kick chase game?

Personally, tactics aside, I'd go for this:

1. Jack McGrath
2. Rory Best (His scrummaging is hugely underrated, and he'll work really nicely in tandem with the props either side of him. Plus he's stepped up big time in the big games recently, was excellent IMO v Munster and England)
3. Tadgh Furlong
4. George Kruis (I wish it was Launch though)
5. Maro Itoje (Huge leap on this guy, and he's so mobile and good at the breakdown. His tackling technique is superb, and just think he offers a little less doggedness than AWJ but a lot more ability wise)
6. Peter O'Mahony (Can be the third lineout option, provides balance to the backrow, where I think we'd lose out if Stander was picked, especially with my choice at 8 being Billy)
7. Sam Warburton
8. Billy Vunipola ( Top Player, and will wreak havoc amongst NZ defense)

9. Murray if possible, if not then Webb over Youngs (Not got a load of depth in this area, and Muraay could be key for us)
10. Sexton

12. Henshaw (Might be contentious, but Im not such a big fan of Farrell as many others are, Henshaws defense is much better, Farrell is actually quite a poor tackler, misses a lot by going too high, and also Sexton is more than capable running a back line on his own)
13. Elliot Daly (This wont happen, but I'd love Daly, who's got a good pass, a good rugby brain, a good extra kicking option for the wider channels, and Pace to burn! More likely to see JD2 or Joseph for Gatland though)

11. George North (With this backline, I can see him sparking to life, he'll get much better front foot ball, and better quality passing from these guys than he gets from the 10/12/13 of the Welsh midfield, who couldnt pass along a can of fanta)
14. Liam Williams (Top winger, no real weaknesses and as elusive as they come, I really like this guy. Good under high ball too)
15. Stuart Hogg (The intensity and grit of Mike brown, only with pace, vision and a big boot to clear. We don't need another kicking option from the tee, Sexton will be fine here, and the aim is to score tries, it has to be, so no Halfpenny for me, even in the 23 with Farrell on the bench to replace Sexton where needed)

16. Jamie George (Big impact guy, fantastic in set pieces, and the brain and skills that could have had him starting, for sure. Ken Owens is good, but think George has a little more X Factor)
17. Mako Vunipola (Scrummaging is improved, and a devastating ball carrier and handling skills come the final 30 minutes)
18. Kyle Sinckler (We are light in this department unfortunately, and he's more dynamic in the loose, as well as probably giving away a lot less penalties than Dan Cole. Leading by a small margin with Cole on the field in the last 10 is a recipe for disaster)
19. AWJ ( Against my ulster roots, he'll bring more grunt and experience to the party to be able to raise the team, or to put his body on the line holding the AB's out)
20. Sean O'Brien (Covers whole back row, and has shown just how effective he can be v New Zealand)
21. Webb/ Youngs if Murray is absent
22. Farrell (No Brainer, covering 10/12, also if 13 is injured, can shift Henshaw to 13, and farrell into 12, leaving only back 3 cover needed for 23 shirt)
23. Anthony Watson (Tough call here, but he's got that spark again to provide something from nothing with his running ability, wouldnt say no to Jack Nowell though if more stability is wanted, or even Seymour)

It was a bit of a tongue in cheek exaggeration. I just hope that all 41 players are given a fair crack of the whip and that the test 23 are selected purely on merit as the best group to execute the tactics needed to win.

I don't agree with all jakedood's team selection above but I would be happy for that to turn out for the first test. Hopefully North get's a few tour games in like his Ireland performance in the 6nations. IMO he is the best Northern Hemisphere winger when on his day but he has struggled with form and simply not getting enough decent ball from the Welsh backs.

Rather Davies but the scots will be moaning if it wasn't Laidlaw.

Doubtful. Most Scottish supporters I know consider Price to be a big upgrade for Laidlaw. They'd just settle for Laidlaw not getting mocked on a UK-wide TV broadcast due to the actions of a bell-end behind the scenes.
