2017 British & Irish Lions Squad Announcement

Right so we are agreed though when we loose this tour its all Howley's fault right? We need to make sure we have a scape goat properly lined up.

On the coaches debate I think the head coach and 3 assitant coaches (likely attack, defence forwards or backs) MUST be representative of all nations. The head coach must get the other 3 in place before any other appointments. Its the only way to get proper representation.

It should be noted whilst we are talking about marginal calls if you change 2-3 Welsh to Scottish how much it looks more right in balance based on various teams form.

It's a good idea in principal but what happens when your first two choices turn you it down. You could end up with a sub par coach just to get all four countries represented. Gatland wouldn't be my choice, (I think Wales need an all new backroom staff) but nobody else wanted it.

Yeah but we already got a subpar coach in Howley anyway might as well get a Scottish one instead ;)

See the importance of an established scape goat ;)

Howlerball sounds too much like Rollerball which if he's advocating deathcycle on the pitch it might actually level the playing field against the AB's.

But the Irish back row got dominated by the Welsh when they played yet people are happy that Stander and O'Brien got picked. There was only one win between 2-5th so there's no point going round saying one player played better than another in single game. I do however think that Watson should have got in in front of Moriarty.

Winning the possession battle 52-48 and gatting 6 turnovers v Wales' 6 doesn't sound like donination to me!

My opinion on the perceived bias towards Wales (and Waikato, I'm coming for you Payne) is that its there, no Welsh player who hasn't been cted has any right to be disappointed and there's instances where they've been picked ahead of better players.

Halfpenny v Kearney v Neither
JD2 v Te'o v Ringrose v Payne v Bennett (Pick 2)
Moriarty v Heaslip v Neither
Biggar v Ford v Russell v Jackson

I've bolded what I think is quite clearly the best option at best I might pick JD2 here, and Moriarty and Halfpenny are the worst options in both their brackets. Considering that not only are better players left at home to make way for the Welsh, there's two cases where they're surplus to requirements, Gatland couldn't convince me this is partial. (I doubt he would, he warned the Scots that they'd get harsh treatment.)

A quick tally of the number of players per position where players can be counted more than once; (Limited to if they've played there in the past 12 months so no SOB at 8 for example)

LH - 3
HK - 3
TH - 3
SR - 5
BFL - 8 (potentially 9, not sure about Lawes)
OPL - 3
8 - 4
SH - 3
OH - 4
IC - 3
OC - 5
Wing - 6
FB - 7...

This squad is carrying one too many 6, 13 and 15 if you ask me, could shave a wing too and not be hurt.

^ He did give the warning and is on record as saying that Scottish players would probably lose out on the marginal calls if there was no Scottish voice in the selection meetings. To deliberately overlook these players out of spite just because a couple of reputable Scottish coaches declined the chance to assist his right hand muppet is nothing short of a disgrace.

I think it should be

1. Mako 2. Owens 3. Furlong
4. Itoje 5. Kruis
6. POM 7. Warbs 8. BV
9. Murray 10. Sexton
12. Farrell 13. JJ
11. North 14. Williams
15. Hogg

I think that teams got the best chance really. All skilled players and offer something above average.

I agree with your front row, rather see AWJ than Kruis in 2nd row, if Gats gets it right Warbs will play 6 and the best 7 in the world will the other side in an all Welsh back row.
your backs are okay though.

Similar to Brown for England he just one of those players people don't like. Webb clearly should go on tour, Youngs is very lucky to be on the plane.

Biggar is a bit gobby where as Brown is a slimy nasty unlikeable ******* that is 2nd on my list of people I would love to punch next to Simon what an arsehole Cowell

I didn't realise O'Brien is Welsh?

Oh well here I go again, trolling a troll.

I think Nel and Huw Jones would have been included had they not been injured.

The facts don't lie in that the twelve Welsh players picked could only muster two 6N wins which suggests they are largely reputation/coach favoured picks as opposed to form. No Welsh sides made the ECC quarter finals so one can't point to domestic form either. People talk about Warburton being in great form but he was dominated by Hamish Watson who should be in instead of Tipuric in my view.

If the Silver David Brent wants to pick players like Biggar because of his defensive skills then fine but when it backfires and the Lions get pumped he had better be ready to take responsibility and accept the reality that this will be his last tour as head coach.

There is not a better ball playing 7 than Tips, Watson is nowhere near as classy, Tipuric would get in any International side, he tackles as much as any top 7, he plays with his head up reading the game better than most and can run and pass as good as a lot of 13's, he has to and I believe will be in the Test 23 if remaining fit.

Let's just be thankful that the Silver David Brent isn't the head judge on Britain's got talent because we'd no doubt have an all Welsh final including a boyband called Take Tw4t featuring Tom Jones, Biggar & Webb.

That might explain why your 13 passes like a 7.
Australia would have no need of him. New Zealand no need of him. Ireland no need for him. Scotland debatable.

Not even debatable for Scotland. Huw Jones is superior to JD2 plus we have Bennett, Matt Scott and Duncan Taylor.

It's easy to say 'would get into any international side in the world' when you clearly only watch Wales.

Leinster no need, dude couldn't even make every club side in the world! He's good, not a guaranteed start good though considering I'm pretty sure the only 6 in Briatain and Ireland not in the squad is Groundhog who weighs in at 65kg so Warbs will be a 7!

I don't agree with Valley but Tips is better than at least 1 of O'Brien, Heaslip and Conan/VDF/Murphy
