England, on the basis of the first half and the last 7-8 mins deserved the win. They should have been out of sight by the end of the first half but a lack of accuracy, a double movement and gutsy Irish defence held them at bay.
Ireland played much better in the 2nd half. Their attacking play was far more creative and layered than the last 2 games. Nowell's tackle on Henshaw was immense and JvdF definitely scored that try. Mike Brown should have gotten a red card, without a doubt.
Positives for Ireland:
Better attacking play
Great defense considering Payne was out
Earls played decently enough, one knock on aside
JvdF was very good - highest tackle count in the game (17) and disrupted English ruck ball very effectively
McCloskey had a decent 2nd half, very unfortunate he was forced off due to injury
Dillane made a huge impact - can't wait to see him and Henderson tear it up (with Molony, James Ryan and Alan O'Connor still coming through)
Scrum was much improved with Ross. We must pray that Moore gets back before South Africa.
Negatives:
Zebo, 1 high ball aside, offered little. Threw a very poor pass to Earls which Earls somehow salvaged
Lineout was beyond appalling
Very inaccurate in attack in the first half - so many knock ons and players getting isolated
Sexton was getting pummelled throughout the game and somehow stood back up. However, I doubt he will be able to last for the next year if he continues to get beaten up. Madigan, who did nothing wrong, cannot be a reliable replacement for Sexton. Jackson needs game time against Italy and Scotland.
Murray was very slow and laboured at ruck time. Seemed to take an age to pass the ball. He played very well, however. Marmion and (hopefully) Luke McGrath should see some gametime.
0 wins out of 3 6N games on paper seems like a dreadful statistic but Ireland are nowhere near as bad as most make them out to be. We've been crippled by injuries to some of our most important players: SOB, POM, Fitzgerald, Henderson, Moore, Payne etc etc. We played very well for the first 30 mins against Wales, butchered some chances later on in that game and blooded a new cap in Stander. We were average against France in terrible conditions but were hammered by injuries (having McFadden on the wing for 60 odd minutes), poor accuracy in France's 22 and Peyper had a shocker as he wrongly disallowed a try, missed 2 yellow cards and didn't mind France constantly being a few metres in front of the offside line. Today, we blooded 3 new caps, defended very well for the first half, were inaccurate in the 1st half, played fairly expansively in the 2nd half (had more line breaks and offloads than England), got very close to scoring once or twice, had a try wrongly disallowed and England should have had 2 men in the bin for the last 10 mins. We're moving in the right direction and are getting closer to being a serious team. Our attack is getting more layered and creative and are transitioning well enough from the likes of POC, Ross, McCarthy etc.
By the time of the Autumn internationals or the next 6N, we could be looking at a team of:
1. McGrath
2. Best
3. Moore
4. Henderson
5. Toner
6. POM/Stander
7. SOB
8. Heaslip
9. Murray
10. Sexton
11. Fitzgerald
12. McCloskey
13. Henshaw/Ringrose
14. Earls/Gilroy
15. Payne/Henshaw
16. Strauss/Tracy
17. Healy
18. Furlong
19. Dillane
20. Stander/POM
21. Marmion/McGrath
22. Jackson
23. Dave Kearney
Obviously the above is based on everyone being fit. It's still staggering that we could have a team with no JvdF, Ringrose, James Cronin, Sean Cronin, Herring, McCloskey, Gilroy, Matt Healy, TOH, Molony, James Ryan (provided Molony and Ryan get decent game time next season and fulfil their potential), Payne, Madigan
