[2015 RWC] Quarter Final 4: Australia vs. Scotland (18/10/2015)

World Rugby tweeted: "TMO can't be used to determine if a penalty should or shouldn't be given. Only for offences is build-up to a try, foul play or scoring of a try."

Foul play is anything a player does within the playing enclosure that is against the letter and spirit of the Laws of the Game. It includes obstruction, unfair play, repeated infringements, dangerous play and misconduct which is prejudicial to the Game.(WR definition)

Deliberate offisde is foul play.

Not true. From the WR definitions: Foul play is anything a player does within the playing enclosure that is against the letter and spirit of the Laws of the Game. It includes obstruction, unfair play, repeated infringements, dangerous play and misconduct which is prejudicial to the Game.

Ergo, a deliberate offisde is foul play. That means it can be referred.

OMG, dude, for about the 100th time on this forum today, World Rugby have put out a statement today that says he could NOT refer this to the TMO.

The crap being spouted against Joubert is getting right on my t**s. His carding Maitland was wrong, he missed the late tackle on Hogg, and obviously got the last decision wrong, but none of that would have mattered if Scotland had been nailing their restarts and lineouts. I couldn't believe with the rain coming down, ball greasy and all you want to do is protect it, they go for a long ball in a lineout which has been malfunctioning the entire tournament. Throw it short, stick it up your jumper and hang the hell on.
Raging at the ref's mistakes, no doubt about it and I'm absolutely gutted. But that's rugby I'm afraid. The boys played better, more exciting rugby than I've seen in years and I'm damned proud of them, so congratulations to the Shackle Draggers. We'll get you next time.

Agreed. All this conspiracy stuff is getting old now. In my eyes, Joubert has just been an inconsistent and fairly poor ref at international level for quite some time now, I've never particularly warmed to him, and that last decision was dubious. But to say he let Australia win on purpose is extreme. Why would he prefer a stronger team in Australia getting through to the semis and (potentially) final and potentially facing his own country of South Africa than a weaker team like Scotland? Surely if there was something dodgy going on whereby he was trying to influence South Africa's chances in future games he would have pushed the game Scotland's way? I feel ridiculous even having to type this.

I've seen incompetent refs but to insinuate the man was cheating in any way is grossly insulting.I hope our great sport doesn't drift down the soccer route. He had to make a snap decision,he couldn't say hang on boys let me think about this a while.Sometimes you have to take it on the chin.Painful I know.

I don't think anyone is *seriously* insinuating Joubert cheated. And if you feel they are then that post should be treated with the contempt it deserves & ignored.

My issue with Joubert is his consistently poor performances & his sprinting off the field at the end of the game like a frightened rabbit, unwilling to even show a decent level of respect to the players and shake their hands.

Speaking of not showing any respect to the players, did anyone see Laidlaw's post match comments? Refused to show any respect for the Wallabies and just wanted to complain about rules he clearly did not know.. I know he was disappointed, but he came across like a very bitter and ungracious loser

That's just the Scots in general.

You'll never find a bunch more adept at whining, complaining and gurning. Well... maybe the Welsh run them close.

At least the English have their stiff upper lip to think of so usually slink off quietly into the night hoping no-one notices.

[Usually, we're too far into the process of removing the painful memories using the medium of alcohol for anyone to make sense of our complaining and gurning.]

Laidlaw is a bit of a fool to be honest, I wouldnt take too much notice of him

Yeah, and they were like that on this forum even before the start of the Tournament... This result will just make more of them into WUM's!

And the last few posts just show the complete idiocy of this forum at times, willing to label entire nations without evidence all whilst showing clear chips in the shoulders of the sh*t stirring posters who have nothing else to contribute.

I think I'll have to question why I even bother with this forum.

1. Was the hit on Hogg in the 2nd half not pretty late and additionally a no arm shoulder charge with no attempt made by the Australian to pull out of the challenge making it a penalty?

Only just seen it in the clip above but it's almost a mirror image of a hit that Keith Earls put on an Argentinian back (can't remember who) which resulted in a penalty.

Yeah, that was a bit over the top. On this forum at least most of Scottish boys have been pretty reasonable and fair.

For the record, I didn't have a go at Scottish people in general, but I did find Laidlaw's comments disappointing and lacking any semblance of grace.

Look at this way, if it was a penalty Scotland would have kicked to touch. They probably would have ended up to a similar place to the lineout they had. Scotland lost their heads, went for a big lineout and cocked it up. Then to go for a long kick off is mind boggling!

That's just part and parcel of it mate. It can be brilliant with some posters providing substance and thoroughly enjoyable reads which is why I come back. But a few xenophobic comments and constant cracks at other nations also comes to the forefront at times. Just disappointing when it's not just regular posters, but moderators.

Some of the childish comments on here are pretty embarrassing to read. Grow up people.

Firstly, congratulations to Australia who played great rugby yesterday. They were the better side, but perhaps shouldnt have won, however that happens in rugby.

I think it's fair to say the penalty given at the end should probably have been a scrum as Phipps touched the ball prior to Welsh. But it is a bit ridiculous to accuse Joubert of deliberately cheating. It was a very close call, and if he was of the opinion he couldnt go to the TMO then his hands were tied after making the call.

It is not the way I would want to lose a match, would much rather the aussies had scored a try, as I'm sure it was not the way the aussies would have prefered the game to have been won.

Perhaps this raises the potential to adopt a tennis/cricket appeals approach where the coaches can raise one or two TMO appeals during a match to cover game changing moments like this that the ref ignores, misses, or gets wrong? This would probably be more preferable than the ref referring to the TMO more frequently for all decisions. Thoughts?

Come on guys.Lets not get into unpleasant comments about other nations and there fans.

Agreed. I understand he was devastated and didn't want to be doing an interview but still I wanted better from our Captain.

Had me missing the stoicism of Kelly Brown.

Oh and as a Scot, lets all refrain from tarring a nation of 5 million with the same brush as a couple posters (most of whom seem pretty new).

I thought given I'd had a go at all home nations including my own people would be able to see it for what it was.

Obviously most on here have had a humour transplant or have a fully paid up pass on the offended bus.
