[2015 RWC] Quarter Final 3: Ireland vs. Argentina (18/10/2015)

You're out of order there. I think the bad blood was between O'Gara and Contepomi, think the encounter next weekend will be as ****ly as any closely contested RWC Quarter final but nowhere near 'bad blood'. The Pumas are a fantastic rugby team, they are having a great year with the win in South Africa the obvious highlight. It's going to be a hell of a game!

I was a huge fan of both players, great drama watching the two of them up against each other for there provinces and countries. Two 'characters' i supposed you would call it, neither of them angels.

Have heard it from Quinlan, ROG even a few others. They don't get on massively well and there's a few on both sides that just don't like each other. Don't get me wrong I think they're a great team and can easily beat us just as we can beat them. But my point is yes we will miss the lads gone but it's the system that's working. I've no doubt it'll be tight and I am under no false illusions thinking a win is certain or anything. But the fact is probably not as much in this generation but the past 1 it was very bad blood. All you've to do is read any of the lads books to get a snippet.

Definitely, I vaguely remember Donncha O'Callaghan talking about it after we beat them in Dublin back in 2008 in a fiery game, but don't quote me on it. But i think it is definitely the generation of players prior to this one, we played in Argentina twice last summer and i don't remember any major issues.

****, I knew Bosch was going to be cited the moment I saw the replay. Still, I think it was pretty softcore compared to some other tackles I've seen in this WC, he even "helped" the namibian player land well. Dangerous and stupid, yes, but I don't think there was any intention to harm. But then, after the bullsh*t that was Galarza's 9 week ban... it's obvious we are being targeted since before the competition started.

Didn't realise this was back in the Millennium stadium, that's a massive advantage to Ireland, almost enough to negate the loss of our 4 greatest leaders. Cardiff is basically a home stadium for us at this stage, even when we play Wales there we tend to win.

Errr, this might come as a shock to you, but neither is Ireland.

The above is a perfect example of the point i'm trying to make. Deluded arrogance, all over the place. I could understand/tolerate that line from a Australian, a NZer, A South African, even an English or a French, but from an Irish? You and Italy are the only tier one rugby teams that have never been past a QF. Ever.
And even when every single time we faced each other in World Cups odds were in your favour you lost more often than not.

And i'm not saying we'll win. I'm just saying that if you look at the past, every single world cup the Irish fans tend to come up with "This time round we have the players and coach to go far" argument and, for whatever reason, you do not deliver.
Again, don't be surprised if a few people do not take your word for granted.

Good luck again and may the best team win.

I can see why you're annoyed, but why could you tolerate it from NZ, OZ, SA, I for one won't be selling my country short, as far as I am concerned we are as good as anybody, no exceptions.
Come On Ireland...

When are officials decided for these?
I've a feeling we will get Poite or Owens.

Far too much trash talk all round. I personally don't think Argentina don't get the respect they deserve a good lot of Irish fans, not all by any means, think we only have to turn up semi is already in the bag. I think they're a better side than France and this'll be no picnic. However I believe on our current form and squad we can beat them and please God we will. back in 1999 and 2007 we were beaten by a better side no shame in it, in 2003 we were the better side. you'll always hear the old punch line from some supporters that the loss in 99 was the worst moment in Irish rugby history leaving aside the fact in the 1990s that we were beaten by Italy twice and lost to Namibia before the 1991 world cup and we got annihilated by France and England on a regular occurrence.
I think we'll just about do it Sunday 1-3pt down to wire!

According to opta we had the best stats for lineouts, tackling and rucking in the group stages. Hopefully they can keep that level of performance going.

Argentina have really impressed me over the last couple of years. I think that of all the QFs this is where the upset may occur. Ireland have had the wood over them in the last couple of years, but this is the best Argentinian team I've seen for a while. They seem to be in pretty good form, definately know how to score points, and if Ireland get a bit unlucky on their injuries then Argentina should consider themselves well in this one!

I'm picking Argentina by 3

Looks like McCarthy is to be called up for PO'C then. Seems that Tuohy really blew his shot in the Scotland game, haven't seen Foley this season but Macca has been one of the standouts for Leinster so far and most importantly has long ads of experience in Schmidts system. Probably won't see the pitch unless Henderson plays 6 and it's a decision I can live with.

Not sure how Ireland are to approach this game?

Argentina play some silky stuff with a lethal back three. Perhaps the best way is to armwrestle them to prevent too much ball going out.

Big problem I have is whether Madigan is capable of controlling a kicking game - pinning the pumas back in their half.

I assume we are delaying squad withdrawals to keep the Pumas from preparing for certain players?

Argentina have a deadly kicker so we better have our discipline in check. Who will be our number 7? Is it true Henderson will be going to number 6?

With all the injuries I would actually consider Argentina the favourites for this game.

Well, you have to beat us physically and tactically too. You just played your toughest game, you have 2/3 starting players injured (including your kicker) and chances are O'Brien will be cited.
We just had our easiest game, rested most players and have no injuries.
The pressure is on Ireland too as they are clear favourites (using betting odds as reference here). We feel comfortable being the underdogs.
Again, i like our odds.

Yeah I agree with this here Argie here. We just lost arguably our 4 best players. Our pack leader, our backs leader and 2 first choice back rows that were on fire, up there with the best back row forwards in the world.

Argentina are injury free and have a kicker who is on fire, whereas Madigan is not a top class kicker (very good but not near Farrell-level accuracy). This will be a tight game decided by kicks and I think the Argies will come out on top.
