[2014 TRC] Australia v New Zealand in Sydney (16/08/2014)

Yeah Mealamu is done. In all honesty I believe we'd be better off with Flynn or bring Hore out of retirement. Mealamu is past it.

I dont entirely agree about Nonu the first half some of his chips were outstanding. This just was not one of those games where the backlines get to stand out.

And with this draw this is SA comp to loose now. Wait was this part of the RC? I assume it was must be the last bledisloe that isnt...

Not just referring to this game about Nonu, but the last few seasons he has been really inconsistent, some games are epic, some are not, but when you look at the rest of the backline they certainly appear to play more consistent. I would be happy to keep him if we have no one else as he is not bad, just SBW offers more I feel.

This was the opening RC game, the last Aus/NA game is not part of the RC.

Australia has a chance at Eden park, but not if they continue to attack the way the did. You can't afford to just shuffle the ball from sideline to sideline against a team like the all blacks - you need to be more clever than that. Our attack is a bit lacking given we have no wingers, but we do have a bloke named Folau who was an ariel try scoring specialist in League, so I don't know why they don't put in cross field kicks when they're close to NZs line - particularly when the ref is playing an advantage! Either way, Link and his coaches need to think more about the attack, because it looked far less varied and dangerous than the Waratahs.

Also, just from a spectator standpoint, there were 6000 more people last night at the ground than at the Super Rugby final, but the Waratahs crowd was way more vocal and much louder. I don't know what it is, but people just can't get up for the wallabies.

An awful game in awful conditions; wish I didn't bother staying up for this game. I don't think Peyper was to blame for that, but I didn't watch the entire game so I can't be sure. I ended up falling asleep around the 50min mark and woke up to the handshake line and the 12-12 score on the TV screen.

I was talking to my brother before the match about how we could have a repeat of 2012, when Australia broke the All Blacks' winning streak with a draw - I should have placed a bet on that hunch! :p

Different game in different conditions, many times I have been in those conditions and it is hard to get into the groove, you are just cold and miserable, and if the game is slow and not a lot happening than even more so.

No quibbles really. Terrible stop-start match in awful conditions, which in the end, were the great leveller, so I don't think this match tells us anything.

Both sides lucky to get the draw; this is not a match that will surviving long on the MySky hard disk.

As for the Barrett yellow card, I thought it was a bit of a crock. It looked like general play to me. There was no ruck, and the ball came loose from the tackle zone, so no gate and no offside.

The Wallabies gave away five consecutive penalties in the first have for not releasing/not rolling away that the tackle. Not even a sniff of a yellow card. Thing is, so did we, and none of the cards we got were for either of those two offences.

Waddup everybody, good to see everyone still active as hell.

I'd say this yellow card was more deserving than the Crockett one. I agree that it was general play and Peyper got it wrong. But the Crockett one was absolutely mind boggling.

The ball was clearly out, Crockett had every right to go for that ball. He went for it, and the ref penalised him for it. Quick tap followed... a string of phases and a fair penalty occurred for not being back 10 which I agree with. Now,.... Peyper tells Richie that he was going to yellow card Crockett at the previous penalty but Beale took a quick tap. Now I know from experience of playing and watching for 2/3's of my life that a ref who wants to give out a card WILL stop a team from taking a quick tap if he wants to have a word. So Peyper, don't give us that BS!. All in all,.. Crockett was wrongfully sin binned for doing exactly what he was entitled to do. Something needs to seriously happen with the officials man.

Agreed, this years super 15 has seem the worst refereeing we have seen for one, almost to the point for me that if you combine it with the proposed format changes it may be the end of me watching as much as I do, will still watch the Chiefs games but not the 4-5 games other games I do.

Not going to dissect every moment of the game as a lot has been said already but I'm happy with the Wallabies performance especially in the wet.

I didn't think White or Beale had a great game. Hopefully we at least see Foley get a start in Auckland, he's more inclined to challenge the line rather than the bealesque art of sideways running. Rettalick, Kaino and McCaw were good for the ABs, you can forgive the wingers from both teams for having quiet nights due to the conditions.

One of the reasons why I am proud of their performance was that normally we say stuff like "The Wallabies have improved" "we can win back the Bledisloe" etc. and then we get done by 20 points or so. Last night we actually stuck it to the best team in the world and especially the first 20, I was going to turn the TV off as the ABs were well in control but the Wallabies flicked a switch and got themselves back into the game. I really think Michael Hooper was responsible for that, he made a few good runs and the boys seemed to respond.

Agreed.

In spite of all the optimism in the lead up to this match, the wallabies were always up against it due to injuries, the weather and the fact that their opponents happened to be the best team in the world.

Sure, there were problems and we probably should have won, but the fact is most people were still expecting us to lose, so getting a draw and dominating so much of the territory and possession shouldn't be grounds for such disappointment.

The thing I just remembered who was sinbinned in one the England matches for a nigh on identical offence the English ball rolled out or something, Im over it now but at the time I was pretty livid about it. We get what two games down the track and it happens again!? EDIT: no they scored a try pretty much directly off it... cant recall now if anyone was sin binned... either way it was the wrong call.

The Refs are gradually every year getting worse imo.

I notice that everytime New Zealand don't play well or draw, loose the fans blame the ref rather than admit their team played badly?

1. Lose.
2. Is that a question?
3. There have been New Zealanders who have said we didn't play well. Many also felt the refereeing was poor. It's not mutually exclusive.
4. Broad generalizations make a bunch of New Zealanders who haven't complained at all, feel resentment and probably make them more argumentitive.

Funny that I notice everytime we sound out the fact some silly pom sticks his nose in and makes this exact comment as above.

How about you guys actually take the time to spell out how the reff didnt cock up multiple calls that helped put the AB's on the backfoot?

I dont think we played that badly infact the first 30 minutes we dominated then Australia came back into the match and dominated the next 50minutes.\

I believe they might of only dominated 30 of those minutes if we werent down to 14 men for 20 minutes of the match... This would of profoundly changed the outcome and result of this match!!
How about them apples!!

Disclaimer: As i said previously I dont believe Australia werent hard done buy either but some of those scrum calls near the end were simply bizarre to say the least.

Australian League fans with the Kangaroos.

That's partly to do with the nature of the opposition though haha

You do realise that you're kinda (partly) proving his point with that sentence?

No I dont realise that at all its in the interpretation and you interpreted it wrongly. And thanks for highlighting that part of my post I ment to bold it.......

No card. The only AB player sin-binned in the three tests was Wyatt Crockett, in the 72nd minute of the third test, for side entry into a maul in the AB 22 following a warning from the ref.

While I have been heavily critical of the consistency of reffing recently and must admit that it's dampened my enjoyment of rugby, its not surprising that they're struggling given the increasingly cynical nature of play, focus on the game, and lack of time for them to practice. Rugby fans in general would be well advised to take a step back and consider what refs are able to do and how we should best preserve our enjoyment of the game.
