[2014 Mid-Year Tests] England vs Barbarians

England just trying to force it too much. Having said that the baa baas were beginning to take the **** with how often they were infringing in the breakdown knowing no cards would come.

Slade, Devoto and Daley stood out for me. Roko on the wing didn't seem to do very much.

for MOTM you get a bottle of Champagne in Baabaa games ??

Gotta be some questions about John Callard's coaching, surely?

He was in charge of the 6n Saxons games this year and last, and those performances were reminiscent of this one.
Normally very good players looking quite bad - particularly in defence.

Anyone who's seen the games I'm talking about agree?

I've seen the ones you're on about if they were the game vs the wolfhounds and the game vs Scotland a earlier in the year ?

If so the games were absolutely terrible . The defence was so awful that Isaac Boss tore them apart who is a pretty standard player for the most part at best

Yeah, but it was the same last year too... and before that they were decent from what I can remember.

I mean, it was still an England team with 6th choice players starting in several positions - particularly in the pack, which is where the biggest difference was.
But even so - still not all that impressed by him.

Good work by Dean Ryan though - had a good balance to their intent.

Sinkler did all right. Gave away one penalty, but the scrum as a unit held up reasonably - BaaBaas definintely looked stronger but it was relatively solid for the most part.
If they're definitely taking one of Sinkler/Collier then I reckon Sinkler will go as he got the most time, the scrum looked better with the starters rather than bench, and he cropped up in the loose more than Collier did in his time on.

...Did ok. Very solid in the scrum until Buchanan went off.

One of him and Collier was definitely going - and I can't see why Collier would be ahead of him.
I'd be pretty shocked if Kyle didn't go.

I'm still hankering to see Robson and Simpson play in a strong England side.

I'd dismiss rats' concerns if it was one game but he's right that there's a definite pattern here.

I hope Daly goes to NZ and is locked in a room with Farrell snr until they iron out the kinks. Its criminal not to have a player of his quality around the England 23 but equally you can see why Lancaster has reservations. He should be in every England squad until the World Cup to try and get him there. If nothing else, his versatility would be huge in a World Cup squad.

Optimistic that the talent is there to have a really good squad in 4 to 5 years time.

Another highly entertaining game. Some of the hits going in from the baabaa's were crazy.

Today did confirm one thing... Dewi Morris chats the most **** of any commentator.

Great game and good atmosphere at Twickers. BaaBaas were the better team and it's good to see them play so well.

England lost because we lack intensity in our defense, especially in midfield, couldn't cope with the BaaBaas on the counter attack and didn't capitalise on enough chances. Maybe we were unlucky a bit, a few times the ball popped up to a forward when if I back had been there a try would have been very likely.

I completely agree with Rats and Peat on the coaching. In his last five games in charge of the Saxons/England XV JC has managed to make a team play considerably worse than the sun of it's parts. All of the problems we had today were the same ones that made the Saxons look so point back in February. I hope we get a new Saxons coach before next season, because at the moment it's a bit of a farce.

Player wise I though Patterson and Wallace we're stand out forwards. Slade bossed the game like a real pro at times and he and Hill both tackled and passed well, future England 10-12 maybe? daly was our best back IMO despite being exposed defensively through a combo of a few errors on his part and Roko's bad positioning. I agree with Peat that he had to be involved with the full England set up as much as possible. He versatility and real talent for attacking rugby is badly needed if we're serious about reaching the real top of the international game.

dunno why everybody is so harsh with the Sky pundits...

I like Sky's pundits in general.... but Dewi Morris is ****ing terrible.

I'd expect Slade and Ford to be our primary FH's in 2019.
Hill has potential, but I don't think we'll see him really near international quality for a couple of years.
I do think he'll get there sooner or later though - particularly if he works on his distribution and kicking game.

I do agree Roko made a couple of defensive errors - but he was put into way too many difficult situations.
I don't know whether that was a result of their defensive system or the Barbarians' good attack.

Let's hope that Daly is selected and really nails down his position with Wasps next season.
Daly, Miller, Wade, Leiua is going to be monumental.

Slade stopping Ranger with his face was quite something. Defensively this England didn't look as structured and I think more than once Roko got caught way out of position. In attack though... Completely different story. With more time together so people are running lines off those breaks and they could tear a fair few defences to pieces.

I've never heard of Devoto before but he seemed to play exceptionally well, even when he was temporarily at 10 (set up a try no less).

I imagine (/hope) he plays his rugby at 12 - certainly with Ford at Bath he's not going to be starting 10 much. Think he has looked exceptional in the centres for Bath, as a "2nd 10" type player like Twelvetrees or Gavlar.

I agree - and I don't think you'll see him used as a FH in the future.
