2014 Canadian Rugby Championship and General Canadian Rugby Chat.

Watch out for Matt Harrison from the Pack, the guy is only 19. I think he is a serious prospect for us. Also have heard that we have a hooker playing in North Otago on their B side and he is also very young.

Good to see some players on the up in this position, as Barkwill will be winding down after the 2015 RWC in all likelihood and Hamilton has never been consistently available. The other guys like Piffero and Govorchin haven't delivered enough to take the reigns yet, maybe they can fill the gap between 2015 and some of these younger players growing into their early mid 20's.

That's great for Ilnicki. Hopefully he makes a name for himself down there. This is a hell of an opportunity for him and better than playing in the CDI league or CRC even if the NRC has some funky rules. I think sooner rather than later he'll take Marshall's spot.

Speaking of Marshall I watched him play the full 80 last night for Hawke's Bay. He definitely looked good from what I saw and he's getting more playing time than he'd ever get in France. I follow Hawke's Bay(as well as a couple other teams with Canadians) on my rugby app and Marshall has played(in descending order) 80, 70, 80, 80, 59 and 57 minutes so far this season. Hawke's Bay also has a record of 4-2 so he's starting for a pretty solid team it seems.

Buydens also got his third start in a row last night, though I fell asleep during the game. Two games in a row he's He's had(again in descending order) 80, 80, 54, 29, 31, 47, 55 minutes of playing time for a Manawatu team that has gone 5-2 so far this ITM Cup.

And that's good news about Hamilton. I know his body doesn't hold up like we'd want but he's still a young and talented player. It is weird to me that he goes to school in Kamloops but made the trip to Ontario. You'd have thought the Kelowna or Vancouver games would have made sense for a BC based student. I can't see him making the leap back to Canada if he's trying for a career in Law. We have a couple lawyers on my club team and they've told me it's a very demanding profession. Though a duo of Harrison/Reed and Hamilton would make me a lot more comfortable about the future of Hooker for Canada. Piffero strikes me more as a hobby rugby player what with his awesome career in France and Govorchin hasn't impressed me this CRC campaign. I'd rather just give the reigns to a younger player and go through the growing pains.

Yeah I got the same impression with Piffero as well, that Rugby is kind of a bonus to his day job, maybe he'll be a depth stopgap option for the next two-three years till some of these other guys step up and get older. He might slip into the 2015 RWC squad as the third hooker behind a starting Carpenter and backup Barkwill.

Best 9 we have ever had, might rate Eddy as number 2 though. Have high hopes for McRorie though.

Williams and Ed was a pretty exceptional tandem we had there. McRorie looks real good, I like Mack as well but he's really bipolar, one week he plays inspired and the next game he's a frenetic mess. White's more a 7's specialist(or should be turned into) and the rest of the gang , Mackenzie, Wilson et. al. are simply middling. Might be a bit of a battle for that third spot on the 2015 RWC roster with that extra guy probably not seeing much game time behind Mack and McRorie.

McRorie seemed a little hit and miss in the June tests, looks as if he is having a good season in the CRC. Noticed he has also been played at 10, better option than Hirayama surely.
Wish Mack had a go during his Ospreys loan, bound to be a better player than Teabaldy.

For the WC: McRorie and Mack go 100% (unless injured) 3rd choice I would choose Ferguson. Mackenzie is always a possible, White better not be going, Ferguson could go too. Jake Robinson is a long shot right now.

Another great performance from Hassler today. Scored an excellent try, never realised how quick he is. Ardron also crossed for a later try.

PD was also saying Hassler had a great game.

Big result in the CRC today, Wolf Pack with a narrow 29-26 win over the Blues in Ontario today but they didn't earn the crucial bonus point and allowed the Blues a losing one. So the Blues must go the Newfoundland and beat the Rock with either of these conditions fuflilled

1) A Try bouns point win

2) No Bonus point try but a large enough margin(think it was 33-34ish) to make up the point differential with the Pack.

Bears beat the Rock 26-20 in a dead rubber game, it's the first point in the standings for the Rock though.
