[2013 TRC] South Africa vs. Australia in Cape Town (28/09/2013)

Thought the former was tremendous today for the Boks. Provides them with such physicality in the loose but he can play as well. Strong all round game and looks to be improving.

I think that was the difference in the end really. Australia desperately lacked ball carriers up front to provide that platform where as South Africa are full of them. On the back of that, the likes of Du Preez took control and the pace out wide turned those opportunities into points.
He is a monster, excellent replacement for Botha but less of a liability.
Van der Merwe is thick, always has been. Not a huge fan of him or Kruger.

Well I'm not unhappy, actually I'm really damn happy about Willie getting another try <3

Flip vd Merwe is a ****, has always been a **** and I don't want him near the bok jersey. Lucky not to be red carded there. ****.

My manlovecrush for FdP is back. That man, that man is..that man... wow. Just WOW.

Granted I've had a beer or two, but I was making a point somewhere. Ah yes. Morne, what the hell. FdP is playing, giving you good ball, and you can't do ****. No man.

Can anyone please tell me who MOTM was? (mine obviously FdP)

Who else thinks we should give Willie a run at no. 10. Have Lambie play at full-black.

A year ago I'd be angry at this, but right now I am desperate for him to get some time. Still don't think Willie would be a good first five yet, not seen him there so I am unsure of him game control. His kicking wasn't great either.

So we got the benefit of the ref call lotto in a match that was already won. Whoop di do! How did we not score a try between the 18m mark and 70? I know HM said that the guys need to focus on the win first and not worry about bonus points but I think they took his meaning the wrong way?

I'd love for Lambie to get a start at 15. Kirchner is well typical Kirchner; nothing special and just when that lack of anything starts to have eyes focussing on his Kirchnerness he has a decent enough game. I'm just tired. While Taute is making a return from injury (since when hasn't he been injured?) Lambie is my man for the 15 jersey.

Speaking of guys that need to be dropped; Pienaar, Flippen vd Merwe and JdP. Liabilities that add nothing IMO.

Well done bokke. We need to improve and improve fast, I see trouble in rosario next week

This sets up next week for great matches.
Boks were okay, get rid of the thugs HM please

It looks like the end of an era for Australia. They were always a team to fear but look very beatable these days. Confidence is low, they've too many average forwards and centers and their famous attacking flair has vanished.

While most other nations have moved forward it seem Australia has stood still or gone backward. They're still a good team but not at the level they once were at.

Am I being harsh or can McKenzie turn things around?

I think you are being a bit rough, my suspicion is that the Aussies under Deans became a somewhat dispirited team and it will probably take McKenzie a year or so to start getting things back on track.

Basically the impression I get is that the skill level is there but the spirit is not at the moment.

I'm just glad the Aussies didn't get White in. Not sure how much better of a job he could have done if at all but I think for SA in particular that would have been bad as he knows us inside out; our make-up and mentality I mean rather than what anyone can observe watching the games we've played.

I'm going to reserve judgement on Australia until the November internationals. The RC came a little too soon after the Lions tour for Oz and McKenzie had scant time to do anything with his side before facing the best side in the world twice in a row. Given a few more months they may be a little more cohesive. That said, it's conceivable that they could go 0-4 in the Autumn. Unlikely, but conceivable nonetheless.

How many players will the Aussies have back by November? They have a fairly lengthy injury list for the 2nd year running, very bad luck.

On another note, does anybody know how an earth James Slipper has managed to work his way to become first choice loosehead?

A more pertinent question would be - why are Australia seemingly unable to produce good, even just decent, scrummagers?

Because Rugby League is too popular in Australia and is a great influence in Rugby Union. That's why Australia have so many good players fast and skillful as: David Pocock, Michael Hooper, Will Genia, Quade Cooper, Digby Ioane, Israel Folau and others, them are lacking strong players do the dirty work, front row of first level, something they never have. For this reason they have had foreign props as Patricio Noriega.

Their front row never highlights, but they have had great players at all other positions: John Eales, George Smith, George Gregan, Michael Lynagh, Stephen Larkham, David Campese, Tim Horan and others.

They need a foreign prop as: Zirakashvili

Cheers

League influences their game to an extent.

But I don't buy that it stops them from being good scrummagers... they consistently produce world class jackalers.

IMO - A prop or scrummager is a long term investment, they're so many issues surrounding their development pathways through AUS schools & clubs that it's just easier to purchase someone decent and let them just play...Sekope Kepu being a more recent example. Look at Rodney Blake...my brother played against him in some 3rd rate Country Queensland comp this year, but he was touted as the biggest AUS prop in a long time...he's only 30...Owen Franks (NZ) is 25.

I don't think long term the AUS union considered development for the front row as a priority, if you go past the current first tier of front row forwards, who have they really got that would be considered world class? Or even at top 10 world rugby standard? The thing is, it is a much more specialised role than any others. Everything starts up front - but from what I've seen they're priority has always been the glitz and glamour roles...the no. 10, the wingers etc. It's a long term investment that I'm not too sure that the ARU was prepared to invest in when they were slinging their cash all round for league converts and the best and brightest next gen athletes like Beale, JOC & Cooper.

I think it's a problem they've had for years, but they've managed to gain enough leverage to allow their stars get them out of jail. It's just now, they don't have enough star players to do that and they're being found wanting.

I finally managed to watch the game! just before work this morning...

My opinion of the game:
The first 20 mins was just a "beat them into submission" which was awesome. Even though the try of Kirchner had a forward pass in the movement. But hats off to the Captain, he showed he had great vision and spread the ball wide to put JJ into the gap.

Our Forwards must be careful, guys like Flip, Duane and Jannie have very short tempers, and perhaps this was the aftermath of the frustration built up inside them from the previous test, but they just made foolish mistakes.

The 2 yellow cards, one before half time, and the other just after half time, cost us. The 2 periods most coaches regard as vital, and we give away silly penalties, and are down to 14 men for 20 minutes. We were lucky to score 3 tries, we were lucky to win as far as we did.

Once again, the referee was woeful. French referees are just not up to par to take charge of such important games. Garces missed so many things, and his assistant referees didn't assist a whole lot either! There should've been a lot more scrum and breakdown penalties!! And I think Poite's performance in the previous test had an effect on Garces' performance, as it looked like the Boks got the advantage of the 50/50 calls. Nick Mallett and John Mitchell were once again very mad at the performance of the referee after the game.

Happy that we won. Happy that we smashed the wobblies. But not happy with the performance.
