If you watch the Highlanders closely, you would see that Dagg stands in at first reciever more than the first five does on attack, and covers the fullback spot on defense. He has pretty much been playing flyhalf all year.
That said i know its still a bit of a leap for him, but its only the welsh and irish after all we can afford a few risks
Yeah he did play at first receiver a lot for the Highlanders, however I don't think he was very impressive there - he was solid, but I don't think he made any breaks or really set the backline going. The strongest part of his game is running the ball back in broken play from fullback - at first-five you take that part of his game away. If they want him to be a first-five I think he needs to get a full season at provincial level in the position - though he certainly has the skills to play 10 (similar to Nick Evans). I can see why people would want him to play 10 - we have about 5-6 test quality fullbacks and we only really have one test quality 10.
