What book are you currently reading?

Dead Peculiar - Stefan Jakubowski

No idea if this will be any good; i had it for xmas, but it looks so tacky i have to give it a read.

I recently read one of those trashy candlelight-like 'books', I believe this one was set in post civil war USA, with a dashing half indian, who is actually an agent for some detective firm, going after some guy who killed some asshole, and falling madly in love with is daughter. She suspects he's after her father though, and doesn't want to give in to temptation, she's supposed to be a widow, he quickly realises she was still a virgin, he then discovers her father is indeed the man he's after, but alas, he has gotten emotionally attached to the entire family. And then the bad guy appears. (they end up married, they always do, unless there was a forced marriage in the beginning, then they end up loving eachother, and pregnant)

It was total ****, and it's a real shame it was one of my mom's books, I sometimes buy a few of those with some friends (it helps that they're super cheap) and write our own comments in it. Can't do that when the book's not mine.
And that's when my mother gets a hold of a copy that all three of us (Steffa, Tina and me) wrote in, saying she enjoyed the comments more than the (almost non existing) story. I think we succesfully predicted the ending after two chapters in that one.

(eveyone needs a hobby, right?)

I am just about to tuck into a book called "A royal challenge accepted" by Alistair Boyd. He traveled round the world in the 1950s on £5.

I also just bought a book on ebay and when it arrived it's quite obviously a library book from Hull! What do I do? WHAT DO I DO?

I've just finished reading;
The Six Sacred Stones - Matthew Reilly, and
Crossfire - Andy McNab.

Now I'm starting;
The Berlin Cross - Greg Flynn

It took me 3 weeks to finish crossfire, but only 3 days for The Six Sacred Stones...It's a pretty good read. Not everyones cup of tea though. Matthew Reilly has been critisised for his over the top fight scenes and instances occuring frequently when the chances were almost impossible, however don't let that deter you. BLOODY GOOD AUTHOR!!!

What do you do? YOU KEEP IT!

Read today:
A few poets by Barbauld, two cooked up ones (Mt scots is pretty bad) by Burns, A lot of poems by Burns, (including Tyger! Tyger! burning bright!), The introduction to 'Vindication of the rights of woman', Some poems by Wordsworth (although I couldn 't bring myself to read tintern abbey, or his preface to the lyrical ballads), a lot of 'flowers, roses, I saw an ant' by his sister, Poems by Colerdigde (including the rhyme of the ancient mariner), poems by Byron, (still have to read some Don Juan), Skipped Shelley, I"'ll do him tomorrow, four poems by Hemans, Poems by Keats, Allt eh wiki entries on the aforementioned authours, and the wiki entries on Brontë Emily, Freneau, Irving, Bryant, Emerson, Longfellow, Poe, Fuller (god that woman must have been annoying), Thoreau, Hawthorne, Whitman, Melville and Dickinson.
And it didn't specify whether Dickinson was into ladies or not, so I'll have to check my anthology. Tomorrow, I'll read the brits I skipped today, and texts by all the americans I mentioned.

Really looking forward to it.

The Hunting of Man - this book is about the evoution of snipers

The Secret Life of Lazslo, Count Dracula by Roderick Anscombe

Just read Flashman - an epic tale of Victorian cad, scoundrel liar Harry Flashman and his adventures in Afghanistan in the 1830s during the first Afghan war! :D

Adam vs God - The Rematch...a book full of essays debunking god and calling the church bullshit etc etc

I love the Flashman books with a passion. In fact I love pretty much anything George MacDonald Fraser has ever written. Was deeply saddened to hear of his recent passing. Fortunately his genius will live on through characters such as Flash Harry.

Just about to start another one of his works called The Pyrates. Supposed to be a lot of fun.

I see allot of myself in good old Flashy. Charming, a cad and a scoundrel, loves to torment the Welsh and Australians for fun and quick as a dart to get out of any sticky situation!

Nemesis - The Last Days of the American Republic by for CIA analyst and International Relations professor Chalmers Johnson. Bloody good read this, very interesting analysis about how the US's international basing structure and military industrial complex works, as well as detailing a number of their clandestine operations and their consequences since WWII.

Has anyone here read The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain?

Utterly fascinating, the stuff it makes you think about... it's intense.

no i haven't, sounds interesting may check it out after i finish harry potter lol

I haven't read every page in this topic so I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but I'm currently reading "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, and I highly Recommend it. Great Read.

The Black Swan by Nasim Taleb.

Wall Street philosophy from last year on how to take advantage of huge, unexpected events (like 9/11).

He contrasts Mediocristan (civil service, salaried career, everything at steady pace and evenly distributed) to Extremistan (winner takes all, huge rewards - uses publishing as one example).

Scathing about inside-the-box experts (economists), the Bell Curve, Theory of Evolution.

Good read for anyone interested in sports betting. France-NZ and Patriots-Giants would be right up his street, if he weren't from Lebanon.
