Last night during the Leinster vs Ulster match it was said that Ulster were going to announce their new 'quality' overseas flyhalf signing.

Quade Cooper / Stephen Donald >>>>>>> Ulster

Stephen Donald is still playing?!
I thought he retired about 5 years ago

He was playing for the Chiefs last year in New Zealand but did not get a contract for this year.

Also Matt Giteau wouldn't be a bad shout. The Japanese league finishes in the next few weeks.

Stephen Donald was practically a done deal until summer when we were up there new years day. They need someone to arrive in next week or 2

Why would they want him? He was muck for Bath, I can't imagine he's improved since hitting his 50th birthday?
Lealifano is off, they're not banking on Jacko or Olding staying out of the big house, neither Munster or Ster are bailing them out, Peter Nelson is bad and Johnny McPhillips is far from ready.

Far better off backing Johnny McPhillips and Michael Lowry than taking in Stephen Donald in my opinion. Donald may help more immediately but he'd be finished in June and Ulster would be right back to square one. McPhillips or Lowry could stick around and help Ulster for a decade.

While I didn't see much in McPhillips to get my hopes up for Ireland u20s, he's looked very good in his cameos against Connacht and Leinster over the last fortnight.

I suspect if it is Donald who signs, Ulster are banking on him getting them to the Champions Cup next season.

Ulster aren't winning the egg and spoon race at the local primary school's sports day this year, even with acclaimed world beater Stephen Donald at 10. Would make more sense to play one of their younger guys or at least take a chance on someone IQ for the rest of the season. If they need to make a more permanent signing next year then fair enough. I'd have to say Giteau might be worth a look though. He could help develop their tens a bit, and can probably still do a job. I think a veteran who helped build a winning culture in a once mercenary club like him could shake things up a bit there as well.
Not particularly surprised they couldn't get anyone from the provinces though. Byrne is playing a lot of rugby, is in good form, playing for a team with trophy ambitions, and has a shot at Irish honors even as second choice. Marsh would be no huge upgrade on McPhillips. Meanwhile at Munster, Johnston is finally back from injury, remains a relatively unknown quantity, has had his career stalled hugely and finally has a chance to put his hand up. I'd imagine he also wouldn't want to play the number of minutes Lealifano had to as well. J.J has already moved to a poor team for 'game time' once already to the detriment of his career. Connacht have no one to spare really, unless Crosbie wants to achieve the goal of spending time at all four provinces.

I'm sure that is the issue Snoop. Just tying up until June and then try get another option in. PJ may be returning but even if he does next year they need a suitable replacement

Thinking about it even more Giteau would be an ideal candidate. He has played 9, 10 and 12 internationally and is currently playing very well for his Japanese club.

He is something who has been a quality player for nearly 15 years and the young guys could learn an awful lot off him.

But is a no go as he wouldn't be available immediately

Japanese Top League ends in like a week and Giteau ain't contracted to anyone for Super Rugby, so he'd be available. Whether he's willing to go back to this attritional standard of rugby to dig out Ulster for probably less money is another story.
