Huge boost to the Stormers. Definitely a man in a very special league along with Joe Schmidt, Graham Henry and Jake White in terms of his understanding of the game. He is able to tailor his approach to suit whatever culture he's immersed in, and that's what makes him special.
I was listening to him speak recently and he had given a mantra to the Japanese to have samurai eyes and ninja bodies. In other words, he always wanted his players to look for opportunities to kill the opposition, even if the team were 1 meter from their own goal line. If an attacking opportunity was on, he expected his team to go for it, don't be conservative, because that's how the Japanese thrived is by attacking and keeping the ball in hand. The ninja bodies was all about acting quickly and with precision. He got Japan to play to their strengths - which is attacking rugby. With the Springboks he helped them to play to theirs as well which is to batter the opposition in defense.
I thought the Stormers underwhelmed this year, but because of the conference system, because they managed to still plug out about 10 wins, and because they do actually have a lot of talented players - they managed to finish 3rd. Imagine what they could do with arguably the most intelligent coach in the game. For me, a guy like Eddie can be the difference between advancing to the final and capitulating at Newlands against the Brumbies in the qualifiers. Extremely well rounded, maybe more than anyone. Proven track record time and time again that he understands his environment, his team and can adapt to that.
