Transfers 2015/16

250-300k puts him among the highest paid players in the country.
Yes - I'd much rather we spent less than that.

worth 300k and actually paying him 300k are two different things though.... it could be sponsorship, car etc... there will surely be tax deductables in there that aren't ca$h?

If true it's a ****ing retarded amount to spend on someone who is clearly second choice in either of the positions he could play.

Whilst I don't doubt that Bath are at least up to the cap, I think they stand out more due to the quality of players than anything else.
The idea that they are significantly more suspect than some of the other potentially sneaky clubs is silly IMO.

Leicester have 51 players in their premiership squad
Saracens have 44.
Bath have 41.
Saints have 42.
Quins have 47.
IMO, the reason Bath stand out is that half the squad will have signed smaller contracts whilst Bath were a mid-table team. For example, Attwood is a test-standard player on a fairly modest salary. Auterac is a Premiership first-choice standard loosehead, signed presumably as squad depth. Ford is one of the best fly-halves in the league, but originally signed only as someone with a good deal of potential.

Bath's biggest challenge will be trying to keep all of these players under the cap whilst renewals are going on.

Would you rather Bath spent only 100k or so on a back-up fly-half and then spend all of your time swearing like mad when Ford's away with England/he gets injured and your back up just isn't up to standard?

I feel like I can predict your answer here - that Rhys Priestland will be the worst of both worlds - but the issue there is Priestland, not spending big on your back-up. I don't see why a team with big trophy ambitions wouldn't try to get two top-class fly-halves.

And I am very happy if Bath aren't trying to use Devoto as a 10/12/15 but instead let him concentrate on one position.
I think that if you sign a 250k-300k second-choice fly-half (Ford won't even be on that money I suspect!), then that fly-half ought to be able to slot into the first team in another position... which may actually be the reason that Bath went for Priestland. Priestland may end up as first-choice 15 but also spending 40% of the season at 10.

Better to have a £300k 10/15, than one £150k 10 and one £150k 15. Bath will need to be employing these kind of cost-cutting measures to be able to sign guys like Vermeulen and Matawalu, strengthen 1, 10 and 15, extend some contracts whilst staying under the cap.

The rumours that are in talks with Berrick Barnes is still around that we have actually agreed a deal with him?

Whats your thoughts...a good signing?
Catterick is really starting to blossom at 10 and is only 24, and Socino has been class at 12.

Would Barnes be a quality addition to the squad...or an overated expense?

Easter's definitely more of a "footballing 8" than a bulldozer.

Worried about what this means about Dan Braid's recent injuries.

Destructive ball carrier is something they could do with.

Well, I'd certainly put Iaone down as a good ball carrier. Destructuve? In the right circumstances I suppose he could be, yes. He isn't huge, in fact he is smallish for a modern 6/8 but he has a surprising turn of speed, a deceptive step and is tenacious close to a goal line.

Haha googled him to see what size he was, as I had in my head that he was bigger and for the in the news section to headlines were shown. One from TVNZ saying 'unwanted highlander joins Sale' and another from the Manchester evening news saying 'Sale Sharks swoop to sign Samoan back-row star TJ Ioane'.

TJ Ioane is an interesting player. As a ball carrier he hits contact with an awful lot of force and very little regard for his own body. You couldn't really fault his carrying at all.

The problem with TJ Ioane (as @Darwin always pointed out - and I know he still checks in on the forum ;)) - is that his handling has been prone to be a bit shaky. He has worked on improving this mind you - and he was actually very impressive for the Highlanders from the bench (he got the label of being a bit of a 'super sub'. When he starts he can be prone to go missing. He's always had some quite erratic form. That said if Sale were short on ball running 8's they could do worse than TJ Ioane I guess..
