If Agulla is picked for Argentina, he's unavailable till mid-October and again in November. They don't want to pay a player who will only be available to play 5-6 games before Christmas.

Hamilton is a dependable squad player who performs to a high enough level week in week out. Agulla is a much better player but presumably they are replacing him with Miles Benjamin - who is a very exciting prospect.

But Leicester manage fine during the six nations when a silly amount of talent goes missing. Missing Agulla for a couple of months shouldn't make too much of a difference to a long season, and he's very handy to have around when it gets to the knockouts.

Leinster are to sign South African lock Quinn Roux from the Western Province/Stormers

21 years old, he was a regular in WP's Vodacom Cup winning side but has only played 29 minutes of Super Rugby due to the emergence of Eben Etzebeth and also competition from Andries Bekker. According to the article he was seen as a better prospect than Etzebeth initially, but Etzebeth overtook him.

Roux will take the "project player" spot in the Leinster squad from Richardt Strauss who will soon qualify for Ireland, in a move similar to that of CJ Stander's to Munster.

here's hoping he's rubbish! (he definitely won't be)

Seems a signing with the future in mind more than the present. Leinster have upped their stocks of young second rows significantly with Roux and Tom Denton on senior contracts and both Gavin Thornbury and Tadhg Beirne entering the academy.

While I hate the concept, it's clearly a project player signing.

I definitely envy the structure and size of Leinsters academy. Wasps in principle may have 'project players' but with a fairly small senior squad it's impossible to keep academy/development players separate from the main squad.

My thoughts entirely!

It doesn't blow me away, we've had to 'cos Mark Irish is gone now. Hopefully our back row replacement for Montagu is better, I hear we are looking SH who has HC experience.

Agreed. I'm not particularly happy with this signing in all honesty. We have lots of young second rows coming through, what was needed was someone with a bit of experience to tide us over until the likes of Flanagan and Beirne could come through. Also, the project player system is utterly repugnant.

@ the OP:

For Munster's departures, you left out Denis Leamy, Jerry Flannery and John Hayes (mid-season) who have all retired. Same for Shane Horgan's retirement (Leinster).

This hasn't received much press at all which shows how he has had a somewhat quiet couple of years, but Leinster legend Rocky Elsom is set to sign for Japanese side the Kobelco Steelers (same side as Jaque Fourie and Peter Grant).

What an earth happened to Elsom? Is it simply a case of injuries have taken their toll on him?

Doesn't seem that long ago that he was a beast in Leinster's first Heineken Cup winning campaign and Rocky chants were at every match he played for them. Anyway, looks like the Lions won't have to be worrying about him in 2013, he's on a two year contract.

Connacht are after signing Danie Poolman from the Stormers

Bristol Rugby are delighted to announce the appointment of Dean Ryan as a Consultant to the Club.

Ryan will remain in his primary role for Sky Sports, with this continuing to take the majority of his time. The consultancy position at Bristol Rugby will involve him for approximately one day per week.

The role at Bristol Rugby will see the 46 year-old working primarily with the Board of Directors and Head Coach Liam Middleton to advise on any issues that have an impact on the Club's ambitions to return to the Aviva Premiership.

Ryan, who won four caps for England, played at the top level of English Rugby for Saracens, Wasps, Newcastle and finally Bristol, where he made forty-five appearances.

He coached Bristol for the 2001/2 season, leading the Club to the Zurich Premiership Final before spending five years as Head Coach at Gloucester.

"I believe the appointment of Dean as a Consultant to the Club will be a great asset for us," said Chairman Chris Booy.

"I'm confident Dean's vast experience and knowledge of Rugby will provide a real benefit throughout the 2012/13 RFU Championship season."

Dean Ryan added: "I am delighted to be renewing my relationship with Bristol Rugby, who gave me the opportunity to take my first steps into coaching.

"I hope the experience that I've gained in a number of different environments will now be of assistance to the Club in its quest to return to the top flight."

Interesting move, sceptical to see what benefit this will actually have on the club.
