The joker shouldn't have an origin story....

Honestly I've only not seen it because the discourse just makes me tired. But the point above stands anytime they try to do it even in The Killing Joke it diminishes the character it's why Ledger's take worked he kept changing the story to inject fear in who he was telling it to rather than it having any truth.

I think it's worth watching for Phoenix's performance and I did really like the film overall. There does seem to be a lot of people who say it's Taxi Driver or The King of Comedy repurposed for this generation and not done as well.

I do find the furore that erupted around it quite amusing. You have to be in a strange place to believe that Arthur Fleck is a hero and that the movie promotes 'incel culture'. The film is actually quite socialist. It's definitely one I'd recommend people watch once but I don't know if it's one I'd watch again myself.

Yeah the Joker is a weirdly controversial movie for what it is. He's up there with Tyler Durden, Walter White, Jordan Belfort and Don Draper list of characters you're missing the point by idolising. There's nothing remotely glamorous about the movie, or main character, from his weird Freudian relationship with his mother, to his weird skeleton body. I think the edgy Joker thing has come full circle to be completely ironic at this stage.
It's a decent movie, I don't regret seeing it, but didn't love it either. Won't be watching it again.

It's worth seeing for Phoenix's performance, which is incredible and he deserves all of the awards he's been getting. Beyond that it's fine, I guess.

On an unrelated not recently finally watched Knives Out and JoJo Rabbit. Really liked both not sure if either completely lived up to the hype but that's an extremely high bar to set. Knives Out did a good job of subverting the whodunnit genre and I look forward to the sequel although it will be hard to match the quality of the cast. Glad to see a revitalisation of the genre.

JoJo had some really great moments and performances there's something I can't quite out my finger on that is a bit disappointing but it's a really good film overall. Sam Rockwell as usual is great and I'm a huge Taika Waititi fan. ScarJo deserves plaudits and gives a lot of heart to the movie but not entirely sure it deserved am Oscar nomination.

Also watch Marshall there. Standard enough American Civil Rights courtroom drama but reading about him damn was Thurgood Marshall an impressive individual.

Definitely agree its worth seeing for his performance, deserved the Oscar i think, or at least the nomination


....dont get it as a "superhero" film...dont see how you could put Batman and Robin in that world without without diminishing the points they made about society...which them makes me think would it not have been better without actually being the Joker...just tell the story of so dude that slowly looses control etc...Just take all the DC IP out of it and it would be this great stand alone film

Crap like this coming out of Trump's mouth really is not surprising really. Saying it at one of his rallies to galvanize his base and yeah also kissing arse to Kim Jong Un works for him on both levels. And he doesn't mind one bit how he comes across because it suits his needs.

Foreign film wins American prize - uproar ensues.
The fact that the foreigners concerned have a different skin tone, just reinforces his self-justification.

It's more believable that he got confused and though it was a North Korean / Chinese film than it is that he actually watched it.

Parasite - brilliant. Can't even put my finger on what is so good about it, it's just a great movie.

Hitman's Bodyguard - decent enough action film. Anything with Salma Hayek in gets a thumbs up really. Weird that part of it is set in Coventry.

Stuber - Terrible.

Long Shot - Surprisingly good, though I'm a sucker for most Seth Rogan movies

The only one I have seen on that list is Parasite and yes it is excellent. Starts of as a bit of a comedy, like the Hustle, before turning darker and also works as a social commentary on Korean society.

This time last year I was also on my way to Japan and watched Bohemian Rhapsody on the way there, but had a stinking bad cold on the flight. Good job not this year as I would have been quarantined. And on the way back I remember watching Green Book.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: First half was some of the most boring cinema I've seen. Picked up in the 2nd half, and I enjoyed the ending - everyone says "It's Tarantinos masterpiece - it's what he wants to make without the execs sticking their noses in!" but all it proves, to me, is that he really needs someone reigning him in. Could've been 30+ mins shorter, easily, and far better for it.

Yeah, wasn't all that taken by Once Upon a Time in Hollywood either. I know Tarantino loves to drag stuff out a little and finish on a bang, but I wasn't even too sure about the ending either.

I know the commune came across as a weird ****** up place, but I was still left feeling unsure why they decided to go off to murder some people almost at random. I also thought the level of violence during that scene was a bit unnecessary, and I'm not one to have issues with violence in films when warranted. I did love the flamethrower scene though.

Saying that, i did enjoy both Pitt and DiCaprio's performances.

I really liked Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Admittedly, that's one of my favourite time periods and I have read and watched a lot about the Manson murders so it being drawn out only made it better. I could see it being mediocre if that wasn't the case for you and no one I watched it with found the Manson scene nearly as eerie as I did.
