Which superhero film gets anywhere near the quality of action that was presented in the likes of Heat, T2, Aliens, Predator, Die Hard(s)?

I cannot see Hollywood producing action films of that quality again, unless they have the balls to spend big on practical effects, and shun typical modern action cinematography.

Original action films are struggling (Although Upgrade again was a great action film proper original Robocop vibes).
Trouble is most great action film directors are going to be tied up with big blockbuster franchises and IMO it has raised the quality of those films massively

Point being you want a good action film watch Upgrade with Budget Tom Hardy Marshall-Green but still really fun film

It's on my watch list, watched the first then minutes a couple of weeks ago.

Heat and T2 don't really have great action set pieces, neither does the original Die Hard. They have great stories which is what makes them great films as does Aliens. Heat is also less of an action film and more a crime drama.

Predator just a tad overrated and doesn't really belong in that list.

Going out of this year The Dark Knight, The Winter Soldier, Captain America 1 I think are superhero films with comparable action/story balance to those older action films.

I'm not a big action fan but if you want glorious stunts your moving into the Fast and Mission Impossible franchises. Or anything with The Stath or The Rock

If we're talking about original films from the last decade although not Hollywood the Raid films in terms of pure action basically trump everything else and I say that as a huge fan of Die Hard and T2.

In Superhero films the first two Nolan Batman's have some great set pieces Winter Soldier also stands out and is impressive to me given the Disney restrictions. Others like Iron Man, Avenger 1 and 3 and Thor 3 all have their moments in terms of action as well. Logan as well will be a classic I'd say.

Other really good action movies outside Superhero movies from 2008-2018:
Taken, Fury Road, Edge of Tomorrow, Dunkirk, Kingsman, Warrior, each Mission Impossible, Scott Pilgrim, John Wick 1+2, Sicario and Baby Driver and I'm just going to stop their because Back to the Future 2 is on tv.

Such a hipster thing to say honestly.

Saying that Raid 2 -----> Dredd -------> Raid

Erhumm:

The shootout in Heat is widely regarded as the greatest in cinema history. So too are the action sequences in T2.
You're really reaching trying to suggest Heat isn't at least partially an action film. It's certainly not a straight up Drama.
The idea that T2 isn't a straight up action film is laughable.

Predator is definitely one of the greatest action films of all time.

Early Statham films were the tail end of old school action cinematography.

Collateral being one of the bookends of the style in my mind, even the John Wick films don't quite scratch the itch I have for that style of action.

I'm not suggesting Heat isn't partially an action film but by the same argument all superhero films are. When it comes to Heat I don't think about the action I think about the drama. Its what makes it a brilliant film. And whilst the shootout sequence is good everything (and thank you Big Ginge for reminding me) in Baby Driver is better.

On T2 yes I've heard many laud it's action sequences and they do nothing for me in that regard. Never really has done.

Predator has always been a lesser film in my books and doesn't deserve to be talk about the same breath as Alien or Terminator franchises.

T2 and Heat are brilliant films.

As I posted this elsewhere

Top 10 Films of 2018

Rule: Must be released in the UK in 2018, I've allowed myself stuff I didn't see in the cinema.

10) Bumblebee - The Transformers film I always wanted and in many ways a remake of the original Bay offering. Actually shows that movie that clicked enough nostalgia buttons to make me like it as how poor it really was.

9) Game Night - Far better and funnier than it really deserved to be. I think you may need gamer friends to really enjoy it but I do and did.

8) Avengers: Infinity War - Being good with the amount of characters this bought together was a feat within itself. Making to bad guy the protagonist was inspired even if you look at it he;s not only wrong he's repugnant. Entire cinema sat in silence throughout the entire credits and that seamed like good thing.

7) A Star Is Born - I was iffy from announcement but the trailer made go. Bradley Cooper clearly has way more talent than he let on before this and Lady Gaga can act. Really memorable for old story that feels like characters are acting like people not because the story requires them to do it.

6) First Man - My first viewing was massively disrupted, my second far less so. It tried to dig deep on what may have drove a man to be part of mankind's greatest achievement whilst notoriously treating it like a day job. The Launch/Landing Sequence to the Moon the more I think about it is absolutely superb and probably my favorite scene in cinema last year.

5) The Shape of Water - Whilst I'll never look at Mrs. Brown in Paddington movies the same way again it was gorgeously shot with a real waterlogged texture. Earned its song and dance number and made me very loved up at the end.

4) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - Best animated film of the year, best superhero film of the year, Best Spider-Man movie ever. Everything about this from soundtrack, story, animation style is Spectacular.

3) I, Tonya - Funny and actually pretty hard hitting to its audience at end. Robbie has long been hugely charismatic as an actress this proved what an extraordinary talent she is.

2) Love, Simon - I was very trepid about this film as I was very worried about a bullying angle the trailer seamed to suggest. I love a good teen rom-com and this is the first worth watching since Easy-A.

1) BLACKkKLANSMAN - Its darkly funny, but its uderlying message and ending make it must watch viewing. The end made me cry in anger.

Anyone seen Mortal Engines?

There was a lot of hype about it pre-release but I've heard literally nothing about it since - to the extent I just had to google it to make sure it's actually out yet

meh 4.5/10.

Enjoyed the opening thought it was excellent, but honestly it was watchable on the big screen but wouldn't buy it on Blu-ray.

I was looking forward to it but almost missed it as there was absolutely no marketing for it in Aus, criminally bad publicity. I have a mate who was a big fan of the books and he had no idea it was even being made!

watch Aquaman on the weekend, liked it, it was MAD and dont think it really connected with the DCEU at all (he went to atlantis in justice league and met Mera so why are they suddenly strangers? but it was fun, bit of a treasure hunt, big battle, awesome visuals...i can look past the plot a bit
