The Metal Thread

Death is in no way overrated.

Decapitated peaked with Nihility and have got progressively worse since btw, just so you know.

I don't think Big E is French at all...I think he's American...living in California, and about 19 years old. Also, he smells like Fritos.

No idea where that came from...it was inspired by wine. :)

So...after discussing metal all day, we went out to dinner and this house band was playing really good blues. It made me realize that I really do prefer music with a melody. Except when I'm mad...then gimme some growl-y metal stuff so I can feel like a 17 year old boy again. I mean...so I can feel 17 again.

Whew.

 well I guess you learn something new every day. Why rats you're right, I didn't know that ! Thank you for the info.

you uh...you often feel like a 17yo boy there, do ya, huh ? I mean...not gonna judge but..I mean sure, it's kinda weird but...
And for the first line you've written: I can't really answer a whole lot about that, I mean God knows what I am, but apparently I've kept count of one thing (somehow) and that's my age. I'm almost a decade older than that, as today, I turned 28. Fkng depressing as hell, God...I'm gonna listen to some of that rats French depressive sadomasochist black metal now.

Now, back on. To...topic. How does Tee Ar Eff feel about funeral doom metal ?? and das, you'll need a different kind of reality-distorting substance for this style WINK WINK...

EDIT: oh and rats, it's a bit wasteful to come back here and post this but I just listened to both tracks you posted from Death and I just needed to say: I just HATE that album so muuuch !!! :p Awful stuff imo...so tasteless...earlier Death, okay, but this uuuugggggghhh...

hey rats, I've just listened to Deathpsell Omega. I'd come across the name before, but I'm anti-black metal.

I'm going to put a hedgehog through one ear and out through the other!

I've been mostly listening to a band called De Profundis recently. Pretty average.

Also gave the latest Ensiferum album a few spins (yes, I know, a long time behind the times) and put Slaughter of the Soul back into rotation, what with word of new ATG album...

haha Borknagar, the band that was supposed to ravish the whole metal scene around the early 2000's with their fresh brand of black metal with clean sung choruses. Cute.
How about a nasty death-thrash classic:

that whole album was really good. I used to play "Desperate Cry" live with my band back in the day...

Truth be told, I've always related much better to men than to women, that's why I'm hanging out here with the guys instead of wasting time on a 50 Shades of Gray forum with a buncha sexually frustrated middle aged women.

Sorry to have digressed from the subject matter of this thread. Now, back to your regularly scheduled head-banging.

Posted the Borknagar 'cos they had clean vocals and das clearly needs more metal with clean vocals. That and they're pretty cool.

Not everything has to be brutal after all

definitely not. But it DOES have to be good !! :D

Y'all want melodic, check out Soilwork. Best choruses in the business. Each one unique, brilliant brilliant band:

Soilwork never did anything for me. Always felt very derivative and second rate.

Anyway, just found this, pretty cool

The same for me - practically the entire genre does IMO.
I've only ever really liked a couple of records: The Jester Race, SOTS, all Amon Amarth except the last two records and BDM's Nocturnal.

You're dead to me.

I'm a big Melodic Death Metal fanboy. It's what got me into extreme metal. I love pretty much everything Dark Tranquillity did up to Damage Done. I'm a fan of early Amorphis. Opeth had some moments (and yes, I do count them) and I feel what Carcass did in their last two albums helped create the framework. Slaughter of the Soul isn't my favourite AtG album. I feel like there's some great second generation Melodic Death metal bands who took the ideas and added more Black/Doom elements - in particular Insomnium - and created some great songs.

But a lot of its pretty samey and poor. But that goes for a lot of metal genres really.

Slaughter of the Soul is their only MDM album though, IMO - the rest is just regular DM.

It just does very little for me, mostly.

well the only difference is Soilwork's melodic death metal work, although very good, was only their first 3 albums. What follows is a brilliant mix of accessible and ultra-catchy song-writing, with choruses on each track, each one original and a different musical idea, very good bridges, leads, solos, interludes - they never go for your shiitty typical chord progressions or cliché "emotional" metal maneuvers. Way past MDMetal, not nearly that formulaic and generic, ever, and a beautiful mix of melodic rock/alternative with some metal roots and elements. And of course Bjorn is one of the top 3 metal voices imo. What a natural gift, but also what great technique.

Melodic death metal was cool when I was a kid and needed my metal to be fed to me straight into my mouth, all chewed up. At the Gates are good though, Inflames do have some good work here and there, and Edge of Sanity for e.g. really does offer something different. But Dark Tranquility are utter rubbish for me, and many other bands in the mix. Hypocrisy, when they turned melodic, had something extra too. Saw em live in Montreal, and they played this metal blockbuster classic:

I'm curious as to how you define MDM then Rats, cos I can't see a definition I agree with that excludes Terminal Spirit Disease.

But there we go. No accounting for taste. I think Ewis is utterly deluded about Soilwork. He thinks I am utterly deluded about Dark Tranquillity probably. And Borknagar.

Anyway, questions

Do you guys go anywhere for new bands/reviews?

Also, what would be your top ten definitive death metal albums?

Peat, I like to go here:
http://www.metalstorm.net/events/new_releases.php?upcoming=1

You can click on "new releases" to have a look at the new stuff that HAS come out. And then the "upcoming" section where ppl talk about their anticipation for albums and you can see what's coming up and all the announced future albums to come out.
My username there is "Annable Courts" :p HILARIOUS RIGHT, HA HA HA !!...

As far as pure death metal, in no particular order:

1 Morbid Angel - Covenant
2 Morbid Angel - Domination (don't give a fk what the "true death metal community" thinks of this, it's awesome)
3 Cannibal Corpse - Kill
4 Cannibal Corpse - Bloodthirst
5 Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis
6 Suffocated - Pierced From Within
7 Decapitated - Nihility

I'd probably fill the rest with other albums from these 4 bands. No band comes close to the level of those guys. Mentions to:
- Vital Remains - Dechristianize (I'm a Christian though lol, but this is pretty damn good)
- Death - Leprosy
- Death - Human
- Death - Individual Thought Patterns
- Hate Eternal - I, Monarch
- Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
- Beneath the Massacre - Evidence of Inequity
- Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (somewhat DM)
- Atheist - Piece of Time
- Deicide - Once Upon the Cross
- Deicide - Serpents of the Light
- Incantation - The Forsaken Mourning of Angelic Anguish (insane ***le lol)
...

Niether can I - I just forgot about that album!

You're both deluded about all three - they all suck balls.

I do like my Unleashed, very consistent band. Nile is impossibly overrated, what a fkng mess, some of their riffs are actually good but they just butcher them. Obituary are comical, John Tardy is such a dork...but they do have a couple of good songs. Origin are a hilarious band to me. Haha Napalm Death, I was just thinkin' that rats dude has got to pay tribute to the most influential English band in the genre ! Immolation are just awful for me.

Just jammed Effigy again after YEARS today. Fkng good stuff indeed. Some great intervals on the fretboard they found for some pure death metal. Love the production, excellent stuff for 1991. Excellent song-writing. It does get repetitive and redundant in parts, the mosh parts especially. You can only heavy palm mute power chords for so many riffs until all those parts sound like "another one of those". But I love the single-note-riffage and the tremolo picked riffs in there. Some cool breaks, heavy as FK overall, def. an excellent record. Happy I played it again. What a band. Clearly one of the DM ***ans out there.

not a Ministry fan, though I love good industrial, but here's the one track which style I LOVE:

Relentless loop, samples, aggro-vocals. Production late 80's/90's ish, delicious. And that typical aspect of good industrial, that feeling of listening to something soiled, dirty.
Anybody got some good indus to show the good people of TRF here ?
