Super Rugby: Kings vs. Force in Port Elizabeth (23/02/2013)

COME ON THE KINGS. CHAMPAGNE AND HOOKERS FOR EVERYONE.

Without getting ahead of myself really glad we got the win, definitely the easiest game we will have all year but their are signs that we might have the talent to put up a fight this year.

The attitude of the Eastern Province public at the game alone is reason enough to justify giving them a shot at Super Rugby.

I thought they might sneak a bonus point loss against the Force but they played much better than I''d have thought for a team with no SR experience together. Well done, a good win and I agree it's good to see the EP pitch up for the game rather than the pitifully empty Ellis park.

The western force are going to bend the kings over and anal rape them so hard and deeply that they will not be able to win a game the whole season. FORCE BY 14+ points and 4 try bonus point

Didn't watch the game, but it is good to see the Kings get off to a winning start. It will be interesting to see how long they can keep it up!

TBH the Force weren't playing the best rugby you've ever seen so the jury is still pretty much out on the Kings. They showed great commitment in defense though and if they could keep that up and get lucky here and there with a try maybe they'll win another. Catrakilis missed a couple at post early on. Very unlike him and I'm sure he'll get back to his best form once he settles in.

Anyone know what the attendance was?

Nevermind, News24 tells me it was 32,000.

Let us see how long that crowd holds, if at all. Although one might expect them to have an even larger crowd for the Sharks game.

The Force took them lightly, choosing to complain about Port Elizabeth on Twitter when they should have been training.

Loved every second of this Force humiliation!

Very gutsy performance. Even though I wrote off the Kings I enjoyed the game. Got to say, was better than a Lions game, and the crowd was great!

please tell the icemn why the kings have 8 points after 1 game??? what rule/point change did I miss :?

must be a bye :?

Yes, but this season is different. It's only 4 points if your team has an individual scheduled bye. Otherwise, the NZ and SA teams would have started with 4 points with only the Aussie teams playing in round 1.

They should stop rewarding a week of with 4 points. It's ridiculous

The reason they do it is to ensure that the top of the table is accurately reflected.

Think about it this way: If no points are awarded, bottom placed teams that have a bye will look accurate (as, generally, it would be likely that the team would lose), while the upper table teams' points will look understated (as they would likely have won). In contrast, if you award points, the lower placed teams look overstated (given points when they would likely lose) and the upper placed teams look accurate.

What's more important, the top of the table teams' points being accurate, or the bottom of the table teams'? I think most people would go with the top of the table.

It may seem a bit funny to award teams if they haven't played, but it allows for a more accurate upper table draw.

I'm with Zeq on this, I've read the reasons for them....digested them and think there, pants on head stupid. As if fans can't look at a table and see "wow the Kings have played one less game than a lot of these teams".

Edit: Also Western Force are terrible.....that is all

Fair enough - I agree that people should be smart enough to work it out for themselves! That being said, I think it's nice when the official table reflects the appropriate positions of teams (of course, SR hardly bothers about this with the stupid qualification structure ;))

To be fair in North American sports a lot of my friends say things like "wow the Leafs are in 6th place" even though they have like four games played more than the team in 7th, so maybe there is some truth to the SR way of doing things despite my own personal dislike of it.

So the reason the teams get 4 points for a bye is because too many stupid people watch rugby? I thought Americans didn't like rugby ;)

Well, it's ridiculous. People should be able to see a team has played less matches. In the NFL, teams don't get points for a bye, that seems to work just fine.
