Super Rugby: Kings vs. Force in Port Elizabeth (23/02/2013)

Watson, Maku, Engels, Adongo and Cooke.

Personally I was thinking Strauss, Catrakilis, Watson, Sykes and Maku. So between us that makes 8 so I hope they keep it at least respectable. Force won't get many more chances for 5 points in SA.

I don't get your meaning?
Nothing too deep really. Have you ever gotten the feeling, when reading a Wales matchday sheet, that a name or two seem to appear very often? (like Jones, Davies or Williams). With South African teams I get the same feeling, though less extreme. It's probably because rugby is pretty much the only context in which I hear afrikaner names, so they just remind me of other rugby players (well, actually I thought the same when I saw that Pistorius' girlfriend's family name was Steenkamp).

Didn't see him play. But I heard reports that he was revelation for Counties Manukau and gunning for Springbok jersey!

Adongo's performance for Counties was very interesting.

Looking at the guy physically, and knowing he had a limited rugby background (which included playing on the wing and in the loose forwards) I expected him to play very loose at lock. I was expecting a guy who would hang off ruck and be great with ball in hand. In fact he was the complete opposite. He was actually extremely effective at clearing out breakdown - when he charged in he would often clear 2-3 opposition players out of the way. He had obviously been coached to focus on this area, and was as good as anyone in NZ rugby here. This rest of his game however looks a work in progress. He is ok (at best) aerially - he is an explosive leaper, but his timing seems to be out (this should improve with experience). His defense is ok, he does pull off the odd big hit, but at other times is strangely passive. He didn't run with the ball near as much as I thought he would, and when he did he was largely ineffective (which surprised me given his size and power). I think he has the potential to be a good Super Rugby coach (if he gets some good coaching), but I don't think he is good enough to be a starting Super Rugby lock at this stage...

Okay, that's what I thought you meant but then reading through the team again I couldn't find players with the same surname and started wondering if I mistook your meaning. Its not surprising that you get that feeling as there are lets say about 200 Afrikaans surnames that are VERY common over here and are mostly Dutch and Dutchified French surnames with a smattering of German and Scottish as these were the original settlers (the VOC put a ban on the French settlers dealing in their home language) and sometimes entire families came over so you have multiple origins wit the same last name and though we do have variety there are some names that'll be VERY common.

So I take it the Kings aren't that good after all? Can my South African bretheren confirm or deny this without bias?...

Just want to know what to expect and so far from the comments, im expecting that I will be sleeping when this game is on

It's a new team without well known stars, most think they will loose heavily
But this might be the perfect stage for new heroes to be made
What makes most Saffas dislike them is how they got into the tournament, not of who they are

Most of the Kings players are decidedly average. If they play well as a team and manage to keep the defense up throughout they might run the Force closer than most would think though IMO.

I'm fairly confident we'll lose by 7+.
I feel like the Kings in Super Rugby really should be seen as a long term development plan for the Eastern Cape in general rather than how they perform in one season. Ironically that idea is somewhat undermined with only 1 guaranteed season in Super Rugby, but at least I get to enjoy live SR matches without having to travel to CpT...

For a year at least.

Now now, As much as we all know the Kings are most likely going to take a hiding in their first year of Super Rugby, don't count them out on the chance of actually winning the relegation matches.

They lost to the lions pre season sure, but only by about 4 points, and after this season is done they'll have an entire season of the most gruelling provincial championship in the world under their belt, that sort of experience could count in their favor.

Everybody are always quick to defend the Lions but I must be one of the few people who don't have much sympathy for the team who were almost consistently the worst in Super Rugby. If they "deserve" to be in their they ought to be able to beat the Kings for the spot, so let's see them do it.

Please note I don't dislike the Lions, and I do respect their tradition as a staple of South African rugby, but they're not invincible, I do think the Kings could stand a chance to play again next year.

Ah but that pre-game can't really be counted... No Elton Jantjies, No Jaco Taute, No Pat Cilliers, No Lionell Mapoe, No Callie Visagie... that is a very long list of players, that could feature for the lions with the promotion/relegation playoff game...

I for think the Kings have NO chance, Zero whatsoever!

I rate the Kings are gonna be ******** bricks halfway through the season after a few injuries. It's gonna be a mixture of sadness and comedy.

The western force are going to bend the kings over and anal rape them so hard and deeply that they will not be able to win a game the whole season. FORCE BY 14+ points and 4 try bonus point

I'm not really sure what to expect out of this match. I thought the Force looked good at times last weekend, so will fancy there chances of picking up the win here. I'm picking the Force by 12.

Things only get worse from here on out for the Kings, this one and their game against the Rebels are the most winnable ones on the season though maybe they might shock the Cheetahs or someone else at home. I went with the Force on this one on Superbru but not by a massive margin, if this one gets ugly it's going to be a very long season for the Kings.

Meh I'm not sure we'll get "bent over and anally raped" the force looked decent (against the rebels...) but they have just travelled halfway across the world, probably to a packed stadium, which should offset the talent difference, not to mention we're probably going to be playing stodgy ball-slowing South African rugby. We'll lose but this is literally as good as it's going to get for the kings. Call it 12-23 to the force.

Looks like the Force aren't going to pull this one out. Someone remind me (brain dead today) - who are the Kings replacing this year? The Lions? I'll get into the swing of things in a week or so. I hope. :p
