I remember in some of the original FIFA games (late 1990s) the ability to perform a deliberate foul. Sometimes you;d get caught, sometimes you wouldn't and you'd gain the advantage. This happens more on the blindside of rucks and scrums and in lineouts than we would probably care to mention, but for certain players, it's a big part of their game. I think this would be a good addition.
There needs to be a difficulty between winning everything 70 nil, and nicking it by a try if you're lucky. A middle ground would be great.
Bundling players into touch in a 'gang' tackle, and more realistic support play, particularly with angled runs, inside passes etc.
Would be nice to be able to create a set play (a la Madden of old), to be used not just from set plays but also in open play.
Celebrations - who doesn't love to see a celebration when they score a try - from the dive over the line to maybe a bit of a dance after!
Manager modes/Career modes similar to Fifa always add a bit of fun, because of the managerial aspects (transferring players - maybe even poaching young rugby league talent) - again, look at FIFA it has it nailed. Better yet a Madden-esque superstar mode. Start as the young scrum half (or whatever) and advance through, being traded to better clubs, negotiating better contracts on your way to captaining your country at a world cup.
A way of sliding the line in a desired direction, or bunching the line, or creating an 'umbrella' line.
More realistic refereeing - they do miss some things and get some things wrong after all. For instance when a scrum goes down, it's not normally a penalty/free kick on the first occasion. Red cards and sin binnings, and possibly citings post match for things the ref missed at the time
Spear tackles - with the added challenge that sending offs could occur.
Players with special talents. Again, think Madden (09 probably), with the 'trucking' player (great at running over people), the elusive player who could side step, the brick wall defender who could tackle anything. Put a rugby slant on it and you have scrummage specialists (Sheridan), rucking specialists (Moody), elusive players (Ashton), hard runners (Tindall) etc.
The CPU should interfere with play as much as I do, with hands in the ruck, dropping scrums etc. The penalty count always seems to be against me!
Weather changes that have a real impact on play. Obviously we all drop the ball more in the rain, but generally minimise it by not throwing 40 yard passes - it would be kept in the forwards. Players would slip as well as drop balls, they mis-read catches etc.
Basically, greater realism, particularly in the technical areas of the game as well as in open play. The more real, the better. I want a sim, not an arcade game!
