Suggestions/ideas for Rugby 2012

I vote FIFA-style defence.

How did lineouts work in 04? They are the one thing I'm most concerned about, at the minute.

- online Multiplayer, SUPERSTAR MODE! like off of FIFA. and superstar mode should support 7v7 and 15v15. with all players on the field controlled by real people. should also be clan support aswell. with clan 15v15 superstar mode tournaments etc..
- Kicking: CHIP KICK! really need to be able to have one in running play instead of just set moves. also have slow motion for aiming the chip kick like they did in rugby league.
- better controls for side step, hand off and dummy pass
- button for trucking ( when a player gets down low and charges straight up)
- better running lines from backs in standard play.
- better set pieces. the players run to slow in set pieces in rugby 08.
- should be option for whether backs stand deeper or closer to a defensive line in attacking play.
- players should be in support on attack giving more opportunities for a pop pass or an offload.
- smarter AI. and more difficult. i can easily beat the all blacks with japan on the hardest setting in rugby 08.

In 04 you picked the lineout type (short, medium, long), the target and the following set play (I think?) from a little menu before the lineout started, with about 8 options for some categories.

instead of having a clunky menu you could simply have button menus so you could press a corressponding button to set the numbers, like x - full, O - 6, trianlge - 5, square - 4, L1 - 3, R1 - 2

to throw in use the left stick use the x, O, square, triangle, L1, R1 buttons to jump the jumpers, then use L2 and R2 or nothin to either catch the ball and set up a maul, tap down from the top, or catch and pass off from the ground

defenders would beable to mark jumpers by pressing the coressponding button to who they expect to jump before the ball is thrown in, then to jump they have to hold the button/s they want and use the left and right sticks to jump so you could have 2 jumpers jumping at the same time in different spots.

I think thatd be complex enough at the beggining yet still fairly simple enough to make

It'd be nice to have fancy moves in the lineout, but until they get the basic lineouts right i dont want to see them.

So a bit like American football games? Sounds do-able for me. Edit - Slightly less so from Hamez's description, but I can still do that, I'd just be rather predictable.

problem with madden is its made for once of plays, i think it would break down if it was used in a game that doesnt stop at the tackle and restart and require passing kicking etc

I was thinking purely along the lines of how you make the choice, with the l-stick and A before the throw, rather than using the d-pad and a button in real-time, as in 06.

ah i get ya, i misunderstood. Have you played 08? they had a very basic system of what i was saying. just right stick and x for front which would catch it, O for middle which would tap it down, triangle for the back which would catch and run. was much better than 06 but way too limited.

No, I haven't, and I'm not quite sure how you could comfortably hold the r-stick and press a face button.

sorry i think it was the left stick. im sure someone that has played it recently could tell us for sure.

sevens!!!!!! please make it possible toplay sevens. It's a more accesible approach to the game for learners in real life and it would surely be in gaming. Also, it could make for some great casual, social, online games and would appeal to the market of people who like rugby but don'treally get how to take advantage of 15 guys

If sevens is to be in the game, this would be the best mode to use the be a pro with to get that a working base before implement into a more complex form of rugby

First off, it's all about the gameplay, it's the be all and end all at the end of the day. It has to stand up at both single player level and at multiplayer level. Not only does it need to play like real rugby (hopefully like the best games of real rugby), but it has to have balance so that we get realsitic scores in a 10/15 minute game, and it also has to be completely glitch free. That includes the elimination of any "money" plays (e.g. a certain sequence guarantess a try or possession), and also online, that players can't exploit flaws to make "cheap" plays.

Then we come to authenticity. It would be nice to have player facial likenesses, but not essential. What is important is that the players have the same physical attributes as their real life counterparts. Height, weight, speed etc, needs to be accurate, with those attributes having an effect on gameplay. People who wear scrumcaps need to have them, left footed kickers etc needs to be correct. I'd like to see players have a form stat, so it would be worthwhile dropping or subbing someone.

People asking for the editing ability of faces, jerseys, crests etc are in dreamland. The most you can hope for is names and maybe attributes and even then it's unlikely you'll be able to import soemone else's from here. This is a world away from PCs. Create a player and the ability to change squads would be nice. Important that online play uses default squads only to stop cheaters. Hopefully we will have a proper license, which HB can update via DLC in the future.

Important for me regarding single player is a realistic tournament option. Ideally a franchise mode. So I can play a Guiness/Magners/Top 14 season which includes Heineken/Amlin cup fixtures and qualification for the following season's comps. Obviously the southern hemisphere boys will want their equivalents. I'm not too bothered about a license here, so English League/ Celtic League / European Cup etc would do for names without sponsors. Same with the international teams, realistic comps. Something I've always wanted is the ability to choose a club and also a country, so the international fixtures are included in the season. At international time, you choose the squad of your country and play the games, before going back to club play.

There needs to be a range of difficulty levels to suit everyone, people need to set the challenge at the right level. Make sure diffculty changes relate to AI and not just make players faster. At the top level there needs to be a serious challenge for longevity.
Online, I'm guessing we'll only get head to head, which will hopefully work well with no lag. If there's leaderboards, quitters must be punished. Ideally I'd like to see the "Online league" function of FIFA. Everyone signs in with whatever team, then whenever you're on you can see who else is on and can play their fixture there and then. League table gets updated automatically. Would be great to run comps from here.

I can't ever imagine there'd be a sevens option in this game. You'd need a completely different AI to the 15 man game, not happening any time soon in my opinion.

Having said all of this, I have big concerns over the size of the budget. As has been mentioned there is a 20:1 ratio comparing sales of rugby to FIFA. That's a lot of dough. With EA pulling out is that damaging, or are HB now getting a bigger cut of the pie, potentially giving them more money?? Either way, I'm guessing quite a few of us will be disappointed with the feature list. Let's just hope the gameplay is the best we've ever played and can play a decent game online.

I was wondering, can we have a hand in deciding the player ratings? This whole time ive been thinking that it doesnt matter if player attributes are wrong as long as there is a player editor. But online mode will require default rosters to be used.

This being the case, can HB let us reach a consensus on player ratings? In previous years there have been some shockers. Nick Evans really sticks out for me, the best aspect of his game was his ability to accelerate into gaps, he was lightning quick, even played on the wing for the all blacks on occasion, then ea rugby comes out and hes one of the slower flyhalves in the game, kick and clap flyhalves from the Heiniken Cup were quicker than him. That single error ruined the whole thing for me as he was one of my favourite players and fairly unusable, it wasnt worth putting him in the all blacks because the character didnt play like him. Carl Hayman was another, he was the undisputed best tighthead prop in world rugby and his stats were average, then there was Isaia Toeava, not only could you not pick him for the all blacks because it listed his nationality as Samoan, but it said he played fullback only, Isaia Toeava plays every single position in the backline bar halfback!

If we cant straight up decide what the ratings are, can HB at least post the stats and rosters up during development so the forum can check for errors or discrepancies? its a whole team of free proof readers willing to work for free

Absolutely spot on with everything and agree 99% except for the bit about being in dreamland wanting to have a feature for editing and importing files to a console. Its done now on PES and is very, very simple. See here to see what I mean.

Obviously I wouldn't want HB to spend too long thinking about an edit mode, and if all we could edit come release day is stats, attributes and accessories i'd be happy with that if they gave a real good solid effort at the gameplay.

I think there'll be questions asked by HB, don't worry about that.

I would like to see the ablity to play full 40 minute halves. Back in the day me and 3 mates would just play '04 with 40 minute halves it was a great experience and ended up with some awesome games.

i would like to see the game keep track of all the players stats for example trys scored and conversions for individuals and teams how many comps won with which teams etc so when you play again it keeps adding to it like the hall of fame but for each team highest score and try scorers and all that stuff . Im also liking the idea of classic teams but the must have real players names.

thats a great idea about having the stats continue in the game. would be cool to break irb world records in the game. passing most tries in a career an most points scored in a career would be prety awesome

Running needs to change and they need to take into consideration the player stats. For example, you should have two bars on the players name tag. these bars should be
1) Accelaration
2) Stamina
the first bar shows you how quickly you player reaches his top speed, for example a prop will take longer than a winger.
The second bar shows how long they can maintain their top speed for. this then leaves room to improve your players fitness and speed through the season and also if you make several breaks your player will get tired and you'll have to sub him.
It should also be used to gather how much power the player is generating. for example if you pass to a prop with high power who is standing still he may not break the gain line, however if you pass to a prop with high speed and high power he will easily break the line. this means you are then looking for all round players rather than players with one great stat and everything else being tire. thus making team recruitment and management important.

I know this will be a unpopular desision but they need to remove the star players option. Reason being is that if you have a team of stars then you will get bored of the game to soon. yes give players that abilities to side step more often (like shane williams) but if you make them a star player there will come a point where these players become untackleable. After all they are human!

I love the "Be A Pro" option on FIFA 10 and the use of the player in the areana during game loading. suggestion would be to create a pro who has basic stats that you can improve on through hitting targets in a game. for example tackle improvement when you make 5 tackles in a game. this then means that your player improves with the way you play amking everyones pro slightly different. this should also be available online so that you have 15 different players around the world playing on the same team.

World club needs to be taken away and changed to be similar to FIFA 10 manager mode where you can take over any club in any competition so the main aim is to get the licensing sorted.
